I remember watching the Blackhawks on WGN-9 and WFLD-32 when I lived in Evanston, IL from 1973-76. Unfortunately in 1976-77, the Wirtz's decided there would be no more road games on TV. I had to listen to all games on WMAQ radio with Jim West calling both home and roadl games. The Blackhawks used to have all 40 road games on TV, the most of any American NHL team at the time.

WSBK back then broadcast nearly all Boston Bruins' home games, so it's possible the video feed from this telecast was from WSBK, with WFLD adding Lloyd Pettit's commentary.

Lou Varga delivered my Hawks Mitchell&Ness jacket to me at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver. He let me into the Hawks room, and I met a few players, Mikita was sharpening his skates, and John Marks getting dressed.That was circa 1976-77ish.

By this time Bobby Orr was out with a knee injury , Phil Esposito and Fred Stanfield were gone and Ken Hodge would be gone at the end of the season, 3 players from the infamous trade in May 1967

Attending Michigan State University (GO SPARTANS!). He didn't become the Blackhawks' broadcaster until 1981. Three years earlier, Brad Palmer was the TV play-by-play voice of the WHA's Chicago Cougars. If I remember correctly, the Blackhawks' organist at the time was Ron Bogda. Never knew he sounded THAT good. Was under the impression that he was recruited from Dracula's castle in Transylvania.

Larry Cahan, BIG D-Man for Cougars used to have a Sports Shop in Vancouver area! I used to chat with him after he sharpened my skates! I used to watch him play for the WHL Canucks. He always used to fire the puck from one end to other after buzzer went off to end the periods! As a young lad That really impressed me bc I could hardly raise the puck off the ice then! Arthur Michael Wirtz, Bill's father, actually established the policy of not showing any home games on local TV. Bill just simply continued it, obviously with disastrous results.

Was Bill Wirtz the owner by this time? And if so that would explain why it was a road game that was televised. For those of you outside of Chicago and dont know. When Dollar Bill was owner President and whatever else he called himself. Would NOT allow home games from Chicago Stadium later United Center to be televised. It wasnt till a few years ago when Bill died and Rocky Wirtz (Bill's namesake) took over the franchise that ALL games home and road were televised!

@@fentonhardy8176 Having played and watched hockey over 50 years, I feel the game was much better in the 60s-early 70s! It went in the crapper in the late 70s, DUMP and CHASE hockey with very little skill shown! After the WHA folded and then the Euro players started coming in, hockey began to improve MUCHLY! They should have removed the redline years earlier to 'open the game up'!
@mr.blackhawk142
@mr.blackhawk142 4 жыл бұрын
@DealioTV, Like I say below, in the mid to late 70s, the NHL was watered down, bc of the WHA rivalry and them taking many NHL stars like Bobby Hull, Pat Stapleton, Andre Lacroix, etc! Many of you may not know this but Lacroix was the ALL TIME LEADING SCORER IN THE WHA! He also centered Bobby Hull against The Russians in 1974! John McKenzie was right winger on that line! That team with Gordie Howe and a few other 'oldsters' were dubbed, "The Over The Hill Gang!"
