Here are excerpts of a Thanksgiving edition of The Ray Rayner Show on WGN Channel 9, in which Ray demonstrates how to carve a turkey for Thanksgiving.
(NOTE: All commercials are cut out of this recording, except for a very small starting snippet aired at one point as described below - can anyone ID it? If so, perhaps it could help pinpoint the year this is from.) This came from a VHS dub of whatever the original source was - not sure where it originated exactly, but if anyone knows or can get us the original tape, we can do a better transfer.
Includes:
Recording coming in midway through Ray about to start his presentation, and (to organ accompaniment - and sounds of turkeys gobbling) lifting the aluminum foil that had covered the cooked turkey (which weighs about 16-18 pounds). He then goes into how he had done the carving the previous year, before pulling out the tray on which the turkey had been cooked and cutting the sewed thread that served to keep the stuffing inside. Next, he cuts the turkey leg - one for serving as a drumstick, the other for slicing; then, wishes happy birthdays and Thanksgiving before introducing the first cartoon.
Opening and closing titles for "A Wild Hare" (1940; Blue Ribbon reissue print showing title as "The Wild Hare") which ends more than halfway through 7:13am [cartoon omitted from posting here due to copyright hassles]
Ray resumes his demonstration by showing where the turkey's head and tail had been, then the back and stomach, before pulling off the wings to cut as he had for the legs. Next, he starts his main cutting with the dark meat from the rest of the leg, before signaling for a break.
Brief "A Visit to the Museum of Science and Industry" telop
Excerpts from "The Penguin Parade" (1938) [cartoon omitted from posting here due to copyright hassles]
Ray then goes for cutting the white meat, and is halfway finished when he signals for another break.
"We'll Be Right Back After These Messages" bumper
Opening and closing titles for "What's Cookin' Doc?" (1943) [cartoon omitted from posting here due to copyright hassles]
Brief snippet of "We'll return following these announcements" bumper before recording cuts out
Ray starts off next segment by explaining Chelveston the duck is in hiding, before leading "Over the River and Through the Woods" (and a brief shot of Chelveston within the studio grounds) before signaling next break.
Brief shots of "we will return" and "back to the show" bumpers (recording cut out in-between) - includes a little snippet of the beginning of a commercial at 14:14 that could help date this recording
Ray finishes his demonstration of how to cut the turkey, then closes the show, after which recording cuts out and resumes with opening Blue Ribbon title for "The Sneezing Weasel" (1938)
"Please, leave the carver alone."
This aired on local Chicago TV on Thanksgiving morning in 197?.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:
