I was 13 at the time and lost my classmate from this heat. We were to start the 8th grade together. My mom wouldn't let my brothers and I go out for anything but at least we had an AC.

I can't imagine what you and your fellow Chicago firefighters saw, witnessed or experienced during the 1995 heat wave. My heart breaks for the families of those who died.

I remember I was visiting my cousins and family that summer. No central air, only fans. I couldn't believe Chicago could get so hot! We had to sleep with wet towels on our forehead and chest. Crazy.

I was cleaning out my mom’s attic during that heat wave. It was about 150 degrees up there.

I was so glad I went to jail this 1995 year. I was cold as heck in lock up but safe from the heat outside. Never going to forget it.

@setapart2serveministries "Glad" you went to jail. Wow. I understand what you wrote here, I just never heard anyone being happy about going to jail.

I remembered that summer of 1995. I even remembered having the power out during that summer. When I was working about 2 or 3 times the power went out. I was working in the deli department in a grocery store. Luckily it was light enough to see by the windows.

0:30 What the....they just buried bodies in wooden coffins like that? No funerals or anything? I lived in Chicago but was in Los Angeles when this happened, I came back right in the middle of it. The pilot announced over the PA just before we landed the temp in Chicago is 105, everyone on the plane was shocked.

I lived in west-central Illinois at that time...with no A/C. Our temps were triple digits 30 out of 31 days (when it was likely 98F) with 100% humidity. I wanted to die. And I'll never forgive myself: We had 3 hermit crabs in a terrarium. I got the fantastic idea of cooling them down by putting ice cubes under their rocks. Later I found them all outside there shells, cooked to a lovely pink. I was so sickened. I'm not in any comparing this to the loss of human lives. I was there. Even the simple act of going to the store was discouraged until after dark. I just remember I what did that day (other than keep myself & the kids I was baby-sitting and my own kid alive). Thought I'd share.

@@louiedajet so true. Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota etc can get outrageously humid in the summer. It's not unusual to see dew points above 75 degrees. That's tropical humidity and actually quite dangerous if the air temperature gets too high. Places up North can be way worse than places in the South during the summer months due to the extreme humidity.

@@microbios8586 yup, I’ve had people by people from dry places in central Mexico who told me that Chicago’s summers are brutal. People don’t understand humidity

@@louiedajet central Mexico is actually quite nice. It doesn't get too hot. I used to go to Mexico City each summer to escape the heat of Texas. Any summer weather in the US except maybe parts of Southern California are way more extreme and unpleasant than lots of places in Mexico and Central America. Chicago has the worst of heat and cold. I could never live up there.
