I was working at a smelting plant in Chicago when this day happened. The cooling sytem had gone out the day before and it was still out during the 105 degree day. Our foreman wouldn't let us go home and a few of the team passed out but the ore kept pouring. We were in an very old building on south Kedzie. I remember some of the wooden lockers in the employees locker room just spontaneously combusted. But the aluminum just kept on pouring. Near end of shift I was delirious and I was pushing wrong buttons and pulling wrong levers. No one seemed to care either. We talked about calling OSHA. We just needed our jobs so we didn't. I made it home that night and stood under the cold shower for an hour. About 10 people on my shift never showed up for work again. I always wondered if they were part of the death total.

The loss of life that Summer was heartbreaking. So many homeless had perished. Because of that heatwave Chicago has the resources that they have, now. Not only this cold storage facility for victims of this Pandemic but, cooling and warming centers are available in extreme weather and "wellness checks" are enacted at these times.

Right and we have procedures now Chicago always keeps an eye out for heat waves, cold temperatures, snow storms, and flooding. The city is one of the cities that climate change impacts first.

Back in 1995 I never knew about the Chicago massive heatwave. 😳 may the victims rest in peace 😇✝️🙏.

I was in high school when this heat wave hit. Unfortunately I lived with caregivers who grew up on farms without heating and air conditioning so they just toughed it out. On the other hand I worked in the grocery store that had an ice cream freezer in it so I bet you can guess where this polar bear spent as much time as possible. :D

@ 2:19 Unlike the 1995 Heatwave, they never needed to implement those emergency measures for the big scary 'pandemic'. Which they are trying bring back again 🙄
@user-gi6ee8vj1y4 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you mention the AIDS pandemic's impact on Chicago? That would have been a better comparison.

We’ll write to the news center and ask them to do that.
