For the calculus I class, I'd already done trigonometry & pre-calc beforehand some years back so I was somewhat familiar with the basics. I decided to take calculus at Sophia Learning because of its open book policy o everything. Also, for the classes you pass, you'll just get a "pass" instead of a letter grade so as long as you meet the required percentage to pass, you'll pass. I mention this last part since I recently found a reddit post asking how important calculus is for future classes at wgu. Most if not all the views shared there said it wasn't important at all, not even for the 2 Discrete Math classes or data structures and algorithms classes. They also recommended a bunch of online calculators to help you get the answers/understand the concepts. That can cut down the time you take to pass your class.

@Josh Madakor - Tech, Education, Career josh I've seen a few videos that software development you can still be applicable for software engineer jobs is this true? The video I saw basically said some software engineer are literally called software developers or software development engineer. Lastly, what 2 or 3 computer languages would you recommend knowing off the bat to bridge the gap and what is the best way to learn them or get certified in them a coding bootcamp, online school, or certification? Thanks for all you do military veteran here trying to transition into tech.

Honestly, half of the Devs in my company don't even have CS/SWE degrees, if a degree at all. Experience trumps all. Get your foot in the door, ship code for 1-5 years, you will find work somewhere else. I agree with this video, CS is great, but SD/SWE will plenty suffice

Hey Josh, appreciate all you've done to streamline the mapping process. Planning to go the CompSci route. Quick question regarding transfer courses. Choosing a random course as an example. WGU's "Business of IT - Project Management" requires 4 competency units, over on the SDC side "Business 311 (SDCM-0073)" is only worth 3 credits hours. Did you have an issue with that? Or the requirement was satisfied as is?

I was studying at first to become a help desk technician with a A+ cert I completed the first course and I am preparing to take the A+ exam. I want your opinion on whether I should grab the WGU SE degree first? Or go for a SE boot camp that has a Income-shared payment plan, which is a type of plan payment that allows you to attend the course for free then, pay it back once you land a job.

Great video Josh, it only reaffirmed my desire to change from Software Development into Computer Science. I got an email the other day mentioning that there will be a change and that starting March 1st of 2023, I'll be able to swap into the new Software Engineering degree but at this point I just want to do CS. I am struggling with getting callbacks for internships despite having some school projects (C867) and other personal projects on my resume. I feel like it might be the fact that I'm not in the CS department...

Honestly if I graduated with a degree in SWE/SD, I would just bring my algo skill up and then put that I had a CS degree on my resume. Is that unethical? Yes, but I don't care. What are they going to do, throw me in jail? lol. Not telling you to do that, but it's what I would do. Feel free to switch to CS if you want though, it's a great program and I don't regret going :)

Hey Josh! Happy holidays and safe travels to u. By chance, does anything from ur course career curriculum transfer to wgu? Or, is the content that is covered in a course careers course, the equivalent/similar to any particular class in the wgu curriculum? Thanks.
@JoshMadakor
@JoshMadakor Жыл бұрын
Hey Mama Cocolilo! good to see you :). Nothing from CourseCareers transfers to WGU yet, but it could/should. I think it takes WGU evaluating our curriculum and officially blessing it/letting it transfer. Enough people have asked me this now where I feel like I should talk to our owner and start reaching out. CourseCareers is probably a combination of little parts from "Introduction to IT", "Business of IT - Applications", and "IT Foundations", but not one whole class. CourseCareers kinda picks a few areas that you can expect to be at almost every help desk job, then we go deep in those areas. The latter half of the course is focused on how to get a job as fast as possible. Hope this helps :), Happy Holidays :)

Hey Josh, I have a question unrelated to the video. I saw many of your your videos prior and decided to attend WGU. I currently work at Amazon and found out that they have a partnership with WGU where they will pay for a entire year. My question to you is would you still recommend, Sophia or Study for any classes in the program? I understand the primary reason for using those third party resources is to save money so you can (graduate in/pay for) fewer terms at WGU rather than more terms. However are there some courses that is overall easier at Sophia and Study or is it better to take all courses at WGU for someone in my position? Thank you for your time!

Some classes are easier, for example, Calculus, Computer Architecture, and Program Management are probably easier at study.com, but if your employer is paying for a whole year of WGU, i MIGHT just go that route :). It kinda depends on how many classes you're bringing in (if any). If you think you can do all in one year, just stick with WGU. If you feel risky, maybe do some of the seemingly harder courses in study.com. Hope this helps!

So the AI that covered in the CS curriculum at WGU isn't actually building libraries and stuff (which is what you need linear algebra for), it's basically using stuff that already exists and creating applications with it.
