Attached is a video filmed on Saturday off the coast of Mississippi in 3,000' of water. We were inspecting the flowline jumper (subsea using an ROV) and saw this.

That is a sperm whale. Giant, yes. Gentle, not really. While I don't think there have been any reported human deaths caused by sperm whales since the end of commercial whaling, that's mostly because we have no reason to interact. They're still carnivorous apex predators. I would not be at all comforted to have a sperm whale near me in deep water.

I spent most of my professional life doing structural design work on offshore oil and gas platforms. When I started in the 1970’s a “deep water” platform was anything in more than 500’ of water. The last project I worked on before my retirement in 2014 was in 7,200 feet of water. The amount of technology and engineering to do anything at those water depths is staggering! Yet here is a creature that simply takes a deep breath and cruises around at nearly 1.5 miles underwater. Is nature amazing or what!

@lisamaitland157
@lisamaitland157 Жыл бұрын
@@AZVIDS They release air a little at a time as they go up.. Now Because their haemoglobin, and myoglobin are way much larger then ours in our blood stream. They store more Oxygen, in the blood after it reaches the Lungs. Their lungs are the same as ours, they need to come up for air. What makes them slightly different from us is, they have adapted over millions of years. One of these traits is called, compressing air in their lungs into the most smallest and confined area. The lungs will compress forcing the air into a smaller spot, the rib cage comes in more due to the lungs and pressure making it becoming smaller. This happens due to outside pressure is pushing in, triggering the ribs to compress. When this process happens, the rib cage will shrink to almost the size of the lung area making it more confined .This prevents them from imploding at deep depths. We build Submarines and submersibles with the same ideal in mind... Well Not like Ocean gate, real Submersibles. Confined area with a circle shape to keep the air in the smallest possible area, and the metal shrinks 1 1/2 inches also. = Whales do this with the air in the lungs and their rib cage. Some are better designed at it then others, this will determine which one's can go past 5,000ft. Same with Sub's some are better then others and can go deeper. Funny how we can take natures traits, and use it also see the deep.

Pretty insane for something to cruise at the surface, take a deep breath, and then spend several hours diving up to 7,000 feet deep in search of food. These guys are like living submarines. And in case you’re wondering how they hold their breath, their muscles are able to store huge amounts of oxygen, so they take a few deep breaths at the surface to oxygenate their bodies before diving deep.

It's crazy that a whale can do this, but a Los Angeles Class nuclear submarine cannot. The official stated maximum depth for those is 650ft, although it's safe to assume they can go somewhat deeper, with some estimates being closer to 1,400. That's still SO MUCH LESS than the whale. It has lungs that need to not collapse or leak. It has blood that needs to not get bubbles on the way back up. Amazing.

With about 2800 psi over its entire body, it’s amazing the whales lungs can hold the air and not be squeezed completely out. Or, its eyes able to withstand those pressures. While working as a structural engineer at Lockheed Martin marine division, we used high pressure chambers to test various materials and shapes. I’ll never forget a golf ball placed in one and water pressure increased to 3000 psi. The golf ball imploded and squeezed to half its size. A gold ball is a hell of a lot harder that a whales eye ball. Perplexing.

Its more incredible when you realise the only creatures you find at that level have evolved and adapted to withstand those pressures, for a whale to have the ability to swim on the surface and go down to those depths on its own free will is astonishing, how it’s able to withstand such pressure without succumbing to some kind of health symptoms shows just how powerful and resilient these creatures are.
