For those wondering what's going on here, she's crying because her grandfather didn't show up to the event, where she'd planned to surprise him with this speech dedicated to him. Her grandfather (koro in Māori) was proud of the male dominated lineage going back to their ancestor, Paikea. Grandfather was disappointed Pai, being female, was the twin who survived when her mother and brother died during her birth. He also didn't want her to receive the name Pai. Pai spends her life trying to win her grandfather's heart, but he shuns her, believing her to be bad luck for their family (whānau) and their tribe (iwi). He excludes her from activities and focuses his efforts on the boys in the tribe, believing they are more worthy of his time and of the training. This is despite the fact that his granddaughter Pai consistently proves herself to be far more formidable, astute and naturally capable in tikinga and in heart than any of the boys in the area. Her grandfather fails to acknowledge her for this, or worse, at times scolds her for showing that the boys are left wanting in comparison to her own abilities. Grandfather isn't a bad guy in the classic sense - he is a proud man who genuinely believes that Pai and the events surrounding her birth don't bode well for the future of his tribe - the backdrop being a world that is ever changing around them due to European dominance and the declining interest of local Māori in te ao Māori (the Māori world). I won't spoil the ending, suffice to say you should never underestimate a wahine Māori who, despite what she could be capable of, simply wants nothing more in this world than to show her love for her whānau - and to be loved in return.

It's very deep culture stuff where only men could be the great leaders. She was born a girl. Courage in her blood but her grandfather ignored her desire to learn like the others because he was closed minded. But she proves herself in the end.
