This gentle giant is in trouble with fishing line wrapped around its tail - can we help it… it’s a race against time….
Welcome to the waters of Isla Mujeres, a picturesque island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. From May through September, these pristine Caribbean waters become a feeding ground for majestic whale sharks that migrate here from all corners of the Atlantic Ocean.
It's a breathtaking sight to witness these gentle giants glide past you, their massive mouths open as they feast on the nutrient-rich waters teeming with fish eggs, plankton and other microscopic sea life.
Isla Mujeres is truly a photographer's paradise, offering unparalleled opportunities to capture the beauty and grace of these magnificent creatures.
But today, one whale shark faces a dire predicament. A fishing lure has become entangled around its tail, and as the shark continues to grow, the plastic line threatens to cut deeper into its flesh, causing pain and potential infection.
Enter Jim Abernethy, a renowned photographer, shark expert, and passionate conservationist. He’s leading a group of eco-tourists on an unforgettable encounter with the whale sharks when he spots the shark with the fish line.
Jim is well-known for his daring underwater rescues, trying to remove hooks from sharks no matter the size.
Now, Jim prepares to embark on a mission to free this entrapped whale shark.
While whale sharks are known for their slow, graceful movements, their relentless pursuit of food means they rarely pause on their journey.
That means Jim will have to free the shark while swimming.
Undeterred, Jim grabs a knife from the boat and plunges into the crystal-clear waters, determined to keep pace with the swimming behemoth. After several attempts with unwavering persistence, he finally manages to sever the fishing line, liberating the whale shark from its predicament.
As I swim up to Jim, a sense of relief washes over me. The whale shark is now free to heal and continue its feast here in the beautiful Caribbean Sea.
This remarkable rescue serves as a poignant reminder that our actions, no matter how small, can have far-reaching consequences for the creatures that call our oceans home. It also reminds us - that when we dump any type of trash in the ocean - it could harm another creature…
