This is the most educational footage of Tsunami ever recorded. The shift from the apparent calm and the relentlessly building danger is mesmerising. There were about three minutes between there being no apparent big problem at all to the cameraman being in danger of his life.

@@magrathean0 - I believe that, at the beginning, it also shows the retreat of the water before the tsunami arrives. I think that channel normally has much more water, as evidenced by the fact that there are so many boats resting on the ground. This video doesn’t show the water receding but it looks to me like it happened minutes before the video starts. Indeed, that may even be why the curious cameraman began recording.

WOW!!! Very good video from start to finish. I'm a 4th grade teacher, and we just learned about tsunamis in our curriculum. I'll be showing these kids parts of this video since they have to write a paper about it.

@@sea7178 The original poster, the teacher, means the fourth grade class is learning about tsunamis in general. I'm sure the teacher already knew about tsunamis and about this terrible event, which happened before the students were born. The teacher had just seen this video and could use it to help the students learn. No need to make unpleasant assumptions. 🙂

People complain about the "cameraman". That is a normal joe watching something incomprehensible while also fearing for his own life. He is watching buildings just like the one he is standing on being swept away. Its amazing that he had the presence of mind to keep filming. The people who stood in the road and watched the water top the wall then tried to run after it was way too late werent just stupid, there is a mesmerizing effect that watching something like this has on people. Its the same reason some people dont run away from tornadoes. They simply cant believe what they are seeing

I was surprised about the complaint about the camera man too. You are right Ron, people get mesmerized about a horrible happening. What a short time it took for a very calm, beautiful river to become a raging monster that devoured everything in its path. Those onlookers were like us, not believing such a disaster was going to strike them within minutes. God bless all of the people caught in this horrible tragedy.

@@janjanjanjan4653 I think the fire was the nuclear plant blowing up. I know a nuclear plant did blow up in this tragedy, whether that was it or not, I’m not sure. This is by far the best footage I’ve seen of this. It’s beyond astonishing how it just keeps getting worse, and worse, and worse, as the filming goes on. I kept thinking that at some point it would start to recede…but, nope. God bless the person filming for recording this, while knowing that his own safety is anything, but guarantee’d. The people of Japan not only have to deal with this terror, but earthquakes, as well. And, either one can happen at any given moment. How in God’s name they were able to pick their lives back up, and move on, and rebuild is as astonishing as the tsunami, itself…..but, they did it. To, Japan’s credit, being the incredible culture they are, they did it.

This video is both amazing and terrifying on many levels. The people must have assumed that the first mass of water was going to be it. That surge was surely impressive, which is why they were at the sea wall or not on the hills already. they had no idea what was about to happen. It is a fascinating snapshot in time...to look at it as they saw it at that moment....before the terror overtook them. So sad for the many lost lives. I hope nothing like this ever happens again to the people of Japan.

Something a lot of people don’t realize when asking “why didn’t more people evacuate?” is that most of these people had only about 10 minutes to get to higher ground, and the emergency announcements are actually announcing the estimated height of the tsunami. So many people genuinely thought they’d be safe because their sea walls or their house were higher than the expected height, only to find out a little too late that the tsunami was coming in much taller than predicted. A lot of people *did* get to higher ground, but either they couldn’t get there fast enough or higher ground wasn’t high enough.

We can see in the early moments of the video that the water has receded by a lot. This is the crest of the huge wave that's coming sucking the water in front of it. During the 2004 sumatra tsunami, people walked towards the beach to see the water recede. So: After an earthquake, if you are by the coast, go to high ground. High ground is any building at least 5 story high or a hill that's big enough. Don't trust a wall or your local authority. Be safe first. Then if nothing happens in a few hours you can go down. Depending on distance it took just 5 minutes near the indonesian coast and 2 hours in Thailand for the wave to reach. It's deadly no matter how far it is. What is very deadly is not just the amount of water but also the speed at which the water come. The sound wave goes faster than the speed of sound while the wave we see is slowed a grows in size by the coast, it still comes in at about 70 km/h. Even at knee high there's no fighting it. The first wave is not the biggest wave. When the water recedes, there may be more waves coming so stay on high ground. The guys filming close like that gave me anxiety!

What many people do not realise about Tsunamis is that there are more than the well known 2 stages, where water recedes off the beach and then the waves hit several minutes later. That's not all there is!! in 2004 we were in Thailand when the Christmas Tsunami hit. The devestation was mind blowing as the waves hit the resorts, but in many ways, watching the water, debris and the deceased being washed back out to sea as the Tsunami recedes is the worst part. It is also one of the most destructive parts. May they all rest in peace.

@@JBArtisan408 you are exactly right, if you look closely, you can see the nozzle or a hose from a propane tank sticking just barely out of the water, and it decompressed making that cloud, now you got to remember that gas is under pressure and is very cold, so the gas cloud froze for just a second, forming a thick white mist, then it warmed and evaporated making it look like it disappeared as it floated up, but i can clearly see it shooting under pressure propane into the air from a tank floating in the water, it looks like it might have got ripped of a house or building, but nothing paranormal for sure.

Anywhere you live can see massive disasters happen. In a quiet, peaceful, safe Québec village a train with chemicals on it came down a hill without brakes and the whole town was destroyed in an instant with many dead. No one expected anything like that! Always be ready to leave quickly, always have shoes or sneakers by your bed in case of an emergency. Always have emergency supplies, first aid kit, some water, some non perishable foods. And some cash in case electronics are down. I always keep a few hundred dollars in cash at home and some in my car, well hidden. Always be aware of your surroundings and have an escape plan. Teach yourself to not panic. Having said all that, enjoy your life, if you know you're ready, all is good. 👋🇨🇦🌠

there is a better video of this - where the 'thing' seems to go vertically up into a tree, then pauses, then it goes back down - across and then reaches the roof - this is when it seems to dissipate - but several seconds later it appears again, moving forward, pausing, moving again out of sight. i thought it was a car size fire extinguisher at first but i cant explain how it seems to move up into the tree, then back down, dissipates, then forms again to make the leap to the roof - that part i cant explain - if it was just the vapour from a propane or fire extinguisher surely it would have been carried more or less uniformly by the current - but you can see when it gets to the roof there is nothing there where you could say "this is where the vapour escaped from" - just found the video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWOYg4d6jauBjbs

Seriously people it's not that hard to figure out their torn away compressed gas tanks! For those you don't know compressed gas when released is extremely cold and makes Vapor Trails just like this you can see. there were numbers of them bobbing around throughout many of these videos. There's nothing Supernatural or even remotely special about them! It's amazing how uncommon common sense is these days!

Just consider how many minutes that water was flowing in just one direction... that tells just how large a water mass it was, then a bit later on as the water has devastated buildings further down area, you get to see more debris coming coming inland. Truly terrifying for all those who were safe and were able to watch this as it happened, and so far beyond terrifying for those running for their lives.... I think ive seen all publicly available films/videos on this, and it still bothers me to this day. I feel for not just those who died, but all those left with nothing... Prayers to all.
