I really hope one day those sanctuaries will be built. Those who've spent their whole lives in small tanks will finally experience the ocean. They'll experience tides, waves, interactions with fish and birds. And if Sea World want to restore their reputation, they should support and fund these sanctuaries. Im sure they'll be given part ownership as well which is fine as long as they promise to not breed or exploit them.

Lolita not only has a living mother, she still knows her pod's language and was also old enough that she would have been able to hunt for her food. She, I think, has the best chance of a successful reintegration into her family.

Evangelista, change IS happening, people DO recognize that these animals should NEVER have been captured for human entertainment. The public is demanding accountability and the end of captive cetaceans. We can't undo the harm that has been done, but we can change the lives of the captives for the better and completely END further capture for entertainment. Society learns and evolves. There is hope!

Why put the sanctuary in nova scotia, which is pretty well boycotted by the rest of Canada, due to their barbaric seal hunt. This is such a great project, but BC would be a way better choice. Weather and tourism is also way better in BC. People in Nova Scotia are numb to animal suffering after years of glorified slaughters and eating seal burgers. They really no longer have any empathy left for marine life. Nova Scotia may have dirt cheap land available, but it seems like such a negative place to put this sanctuary. Also if any Belugas or Narwhals escape or are released, there is a chance that they could swim into the hunting grounds north of Nova Scotia. Being comfortable with humans will mean that they will be the first ones slaughtered if Natives are out hunting.

What's the difference between a tank and a sanctuary? They shouldn't be in our captivity at all. Release them all and whatever happens to them, happens. Is it cruel? yes. More cruel than captivity? ask the future captive marine animals that.

A sanctuary is better because it would be a sea pen, much bigger and deeper, instead of a concrete pool of chlorine. While I agree that they shouldn’t be in captivity at all, we should at least try to teach them how to hunt and survive again, and honestly, I also think that them dying back in the ocean than a concrete pool is better, but it’s not better than them being able to learn how to be free again

Why would anyone listen to one of the hippie fools that killed Keiko?
@RebeccaTaylorTillery
@RebeccaTaylorTillery 3 жыл бұрын
The people who killed Keiko were the ones who captured him in the first place. Keiko was taken from his mother, and she was killed right in front of him, but from a pod that was not studied. We had no clue which pod he was taken from, so they were unsuccessful in reuniting him with his true family. Although he died so soon after release from captivity, he had a much higher quality of life than what he had in a concrete tank.

Keiko died 5 years later after he was released from his prison. He was monitored and watched over until he died from pneumonia.
@birb70
@birb70 Ай бұрын
He died of pneumonia, something that both wild and captive orcas can die from. He also had awful health before he was sent to the sea pen, he had skin infections, which got better once he was finally in the sea, but then again, years of not having proper health or conditions likely affected his death as well. Huh, I wonder why. He also couldn’t rejoin a pod, hmm, could be because people CAPTURED and took him away from his pod in the first place. I wonder who killed Keiko, the ones who captured and put him in improper conditions until his health declined, or the ones who moved him to a better place where his health improved?
