Great fun guys. Please do more of these reviews. All three are fab 30-35 feet boats but in the UK Jack's choice of the Marex has to be favourite for me, Nick's choice is ok but wet gear and freezing hands needed to erect various pieces of canvas in a freezing flash rainstorm and as for Hugo's, well it is a beautiful breath-taking design and the best boat for about 10/14 days of the UK year. The rest of the year you will be spending dreaming about what you've got moored in the marina whilst watching the rain through your windows at home. You can't even watch the rain through the windows in the F-Line 33 because it aint got any, sounds like solitary confinement to me. Superb video.

Great content, thoroughly enjoyable way to spend half an hour. If you do decide to have a similar debate based the classifieds could I suggest trying to choose the "perfect family boat and why" at two or three different price points. Eg £40, £80 & £120k for a family of four? I think this would relevant to a very wide demographic. Thanks again

Well done to all 3 of you, excellent video and love the banter. Hugo you are clearly a Southern fine weather only boater. Nick, clearly a Jeannau owner and l like the commitment, I purchased a brand new Jeannau in 2018 and the mass build quality was shocking, so many issues I was happy to ‘get rid’ within 12 months with a sense of relief. I have moved to the all weather option of the Sealine C330, build quality and features against against the Jeanneau, there is no comparison. Great feature.

There's no doubting which is the most stunning and desirable of your choices. The Fairline wins hands down. What a head-turner. I love how boat designers are forced into being ingenious with their use of space on smaller boats and the Jeanneau and Marex are both full of ingenuity but I think for practicality, good looks and value for money, I prefer the Galeon 335 HTS.

I'm here in the States and it very interesting that none of you even considered an American boat. Hey, we certainly know how to make some stunning crap over here, but there are some real contenders here as well. I think Jack is on the mark here with a Marex. The 36 really sings to me. I do think there is a big series of "wish boats" and I would like more please. The previously owned market would make a lively discussion. Boats from both sides of the Atlantic as a topic. Money no object is a topic. UK vs Med boats as a topic. So many others. Keep it going. Thanks. And just for the record, I am an owner of a 35ft Express cruiser with 2 gas engines and VP duoprops. Fuel is one of the least expenses owning the boat! Thank you all.

Cool format guys - keep that up. A variety of opinions (when they are well justified) and healthy friendly debate is often even more useful than just showcasing a single boat. I get that its a UK channel with a lot of UK subscribers ... but dont lose track of the fact that there are many UK subscribers who actually are fair weather boaters (i am with Hugo - who wants to go boating in the rain - its a pleasure hobby after all) and only sail in the Med (but still subcribe to the channel for useful info), therefore weather is a lot less of an issue for us. BTW ... Beneteau Flyer 10? Any reason it wasnt worth a mention?

I will point out something that Nick forgot to mention is, with most modern hard top boats with a sunroof, you either: open the roof, get some breeze but get burned to a crisp, or close the roof, which gives you some shade, but then you bake indoors. Now with a proper open boat, yes you might have to fiddle with the canvas but, you can have the top on, without the sides & have nice breeze while being protected from the sun. Perfect!

Jack didn’t expressly mention a country, so I’m with Hugo on this. Who wants to fiddle about in drizzly Britain....? 🤔...Nick is clearly a Jeanneau Brand Ambassador on day-release and the Marex is far too sensible, along with your Botnias et al. There are people who’ve seen the light, eschewed the drizzle, headed for the Med and see ‘life as far too short’. If you’ve got the folding...then have the F-33...although very surprised no one gave an honourable mention to Cormate....

I really enjoyed your debate, and would love to hear a debate on buying older boats. Of course our entry point into boating was in fact a Cobra RIB of indeterminate age for £14k. Second boat was a Humber Sports pro for around £35k (she was 3 years old and as close to turnkey boating as you can get, with a lovely Suzuki leanburn 300 on the back). So the latest boat is a Sunseeker Martinique for £33k and then the costs of the refit...(50-70k - we’ve not finished yet and some was an insurance claim.) Thinking about the engines- and I promise we have been “round the houses on this one” Choice 1 new Volvo diesels 80k plus fitting. 2. New Volvo petrols 50k ish plus fitting and new fuel tank,3. Hyundai sundial S270s (fits the sterndrives) 33k plus fitting and adjustment to engine mounts. Or 4. Keep the AQAD41s going somehow. However, I begin to wonder if there is an option 5 and if that might be the way to go. Option 5. Coax AQAD41s into living for another 5 years and replace with Torqueedo inboard electric engines? Since we can’t decide we are at default option 4. I guess there will be as many views on this as people reading the post! If I was choosing new, and realistically going forward it will probably just be my husband and I boating I think the boat of choice would be the Axopar 37 cabin version

James Gibson I agree with Jack haines. He is being pragmatic, whilst selecting a really enjoyable, well built and rather innovative boat ideal for a family. Well done Jack. My first boat back in 2007 was a Cranchi 34 sports boat. At that time sports boats with hard tops of that size were rare. We live in a country on the Med and although we had tropical aircon and a soft top, we sold it after a year, as it just did not provide sufficient protection from the sun. If I lived in UK I would, like you Jack, wish to have a hard top so that I could enjoy boating regardless of weather. As to fiddling with the traditional canvas protection ..... ugh.. you really must enjoy losing thumbnails !!

With the boats you have mentioned , What type of Customer are you seeking to influence into buying their first boat ? Affluent or Middle class ? It's all fine well spending money on a boat .. but you have to take into consideration the cost of mooring a boat at a berth or having it tied up in some Harbour .. as am sure you know the prices around the UK isn't the same and some charge on the size . And am sure you are aware their is boat owners that can't or simply unwilling to pay mooring fee's so they simply leave their boat anchored offshore . Can you name a boat you would buy that is affordable less than 100,000

The Fairline is a great boat for the Med or the Italian lakes, but if you're boating in Britain and you don't want the thing sat in the marina eating its head off half the season you need to be able to go out when conditions are 'sub-optimal'. The hull form of the Marex is by far the prettiest of the 3 (IMHO) and only slightly spoiled by the rather chunky super structure.

And Marex just announced a new 330 Scandinavia model which would win over the 310 as it has a few new extras like helm side door and double dash. Options for single or twin, stern drive or shaft. My new winner in this debate.

@markperrins9485 4 жыл бұрын
Well. So let’s get started. Fantastic debate. After reading it in the MBM it has been great to watch it too. So Hugo, totally disagree with your idea of what boating is about. For me and my special other it is about getting away from the hustle of business life and hassle. Even if the weather is somewhat inclement no matter, just slide the roof closed pin up the three section stern canopy, switch on the heating and watch a carry on film on the saloon TV with a nice beer or in my wife’s case a good book of which she never reads because she falls asleep on the first page lol. We go boating all year, some of the nicest cruising days are in winter, a beautiful crisp and bright day, get out of the marina early before the madding crowds, flat calm waters drenched in un hindered sun light gently bobbing on the anchor. Oh wait a minute, it’s raining. Il just slide the roof closed until it passes. Didn’t feel that on the thumbs. The fairline is an absolutely super boat. The craftsmanship is to die for. However we all know it is aimed at a minority and would only make an interesting read or short video to serious everyday boaters. So Hugo your choice is far far to fantastical. Nick your turn. May be your being biased because you own a Jenny as I call them. Don’t get me wrong the model you own I believe are brilliantly designed and very comfortable. The wife favours the down stairs cabin but I prefer a 360 degree view of my surroundings whilst chilling out. I also think the boat of your choice has a brilliant design. But come on nick really, canopies. OK the wind in your hair, sleet stinging your face, flies in your mouth, saves eating lunch I suppose. If I could have the boat of your choice Nick it would be the hard top version. The engines. Definitely don’t like twin engine boats. Engines in boats these days tend to be ultra reliable and turn key as good as motoring I would say. So great choice but the hard top for me. I noticed you did not mention a Targa at all. I know you just love the Targa 38. Go get one Nick. So Jack. What can I say. The boat of my dreams. The Marex 31. Hands down with out a doubt. Second choice for me the swift trawler 31. I think Jack and I see what boating is all about, all year round use of a serious investment. What’s the point in owning a boat and storing for 6 months in the winter, waste of money and effort. Boats are made to be used not left sat in the yard. I personally cannot bear more than two weeks from my boat. How I managed five months with mine ashore at the Hamble point due to lockdown I will never know. So jack, totally with you on this. The Marex is a stunning bit of design. Not much more to say, just a perfect cruising boat built by the best.I wish I could afford one. So what boat do I have. It is a Grandezza 27OC. I looked hard and long for a decent all weather boat in my value range of 120k. I firmly believe I nailed it. It has the grey mid section on the hull, a Truely stunning looking boat and with a D4 300 it is great fun to throw about should you want to, it can cruise at 17knotts or up to 39knotts depending on load, wind and sea conditions. Admittedly I have spent a fair amount on it tweaking it to suit my comfort level here and there. All the latest tech onboard. Must have all the toys. The only niggle is the annoying rattle from the mechanism on the handle used to open and close the roof. My guess is to pack it with thick grease, this will cease the rattle. Keep up the great work all. Don’t know what I would do with out you guys. Life with out. Oats, not worth thinking about. Mark..

The Fairline does look extremely fun to drive, but if money wasn't an issue I'd sacrifice max speed and go with a Colombo 32. Hugo is obviously correct on this, who the heck wants to go boating in the rain -at least on a 30-35ft boat? If I were a barbaian and a hardtop was required, how about the Invictus GT320 or the DeAntonio D34 C - great access to water, large cockpits & entertainment space and far more characterful than those utilitarian weekenders like the Jeanneau and the Marex.

Gents, the boat you failed to mention is the very capable Nimbus Nova 34 Open. Fantastic sociable cockpit with good overnight accommodation, and with a pair of D4's, it will do over 30kts very comfortably. Fabulous boat.

Greenline 33 - love the classic look but would need to trial it for sea worthiness in the U.S. West Coast - Pacific Ocean.

That was very entertaining and your choices are varied. Maybe over budget than 100k. The three Amigos of the seas. Great video

Just under 30ft I’d have an Antares 9. Might not be the fanciest option but it’s 1/4 the cost of the Leader 33 and has a better cabin arrangement IMO.

Enjoyed this debate! But surely all three boats are "blown out the water" by a Botnia Targa 32 - either a hybrid or one with Twin 400s (+50 mph). You can pick one up second-hand, boat in winter, seaworthy. What's not to like?

I have been made aware that a licence is needed for a motor boat over 10 metres. Sounds like Jacks 31 ft Marex is the perfect boat for a newbie until the skills needed to be safe and responsible are met. As I dont really need a galley I am now seriously thinking about a secondhand 28 ft Axopar until I am a competent boater. Shame I carnt get any RYA courses organised until later in the year or 2021 spring. Sorry Jack if I missed your point of the Marex 31.

I can't believe you guys are picking so many open boats. No doubt, I would want a hard top design with a big sun roof and no canvas.

The three of you should continue to do valuations of boats. Ps SeaRay second hand is a good buy. I bought a 375 (knew) which was a excellent all rounder for my needs. I used to import boats from the USA into Aus .. that I don’t recommend.. as in selling boats

This would be interesting to consider used boats where you each have the same budget, say £125,000, and you have to find that model advertised and available, somewhere in the world.

What about Windy Zonda, or Shamal if you stretch it to 37? The quality and feel of a Windy can't be matched by the Jeanneau.

Now lets say you want your first family boat between £85k and £150k made between 1995 and 2005 what would you choose? Does it make more sense to buy one of these boats or an older boat thats 38-42' and costs half the money?

I would definitely go for the Galeon 335 HTS in this category, and out of your 3 choices I would pick the Jeanneau. I liked the Marex until I saw the inside and, well, it looks like a small house with all those doors wasting space... definitely not my type of boat.
