Do you use 3/4 minus gravel underneath rocks and sand in between them? What type of soil dictates using geo textile fabric? Thanks

We always use geo textile. The thing I was referring to in the video is I had misunderstood what the project was designed as. Originally I thought we were just setting the flagstone on the subgrade with a little stone dust to level them. But what we did was actually dig out the subgrade and build a proper base for them

It can definitely be done by DIYers. The reason you have professionals do it is because most people don't have the time or access to the excavators, flat beds, and skid loaders required to haul/place the stones and earth. Those machines are easily rented from big box stored but even then, most people are too intimidated to do so. These guys obviously know what they are doing but a determined home owner that takes the time to understand compaction and grading can do everything in this video, albeit not in a few days.

@@iandanger883 I'd argue that a determined home owner operating at this level would stretch the definition of DIYer so far past its typical definition that they would be in some form of semi-pro-working-for-free-on-my-own-stuff category that may technically still be doing it yourself, but I digress :P

I have always liked the natural stone steps (not the pathway ones, but the ones that are used for actual steps). What kind of stone is that in most cases? I have ideas for my Tennessee land but I need to weigh the cost of putting them in against the practicality of steps that really don't lead anywhere other than a bluff setting. If you Like my "Crystal Ridge" page on the Evil Empire website (otherwise known as Facebook), you can see what I'm talking about I think. Also, do you think it's easier to mount railings to the exposed flat rock in front of a mountain view or drill down into the stone?

We use a lot of what is called "Black Hills" natural stone steps from Semco in Missouri. Yukon Valley also makes some great stone steps. Not sure I entirely follow your question about railings. We have mounted railings to steps like these though. Just drill directly into the step

@@Tusseylandscaping Yeah, when I reread the comment, even I was like, dude, what the hell are you talking about. This is the thing. There's a rock that juts out from the ridge and will give us a pretty spectacular view once we knock the trees down. This rock has a fairly flat surface as it drops off towards the ravine. It's solid rock... whatever Spencer Mountain is made of... so, to set the vertical support posts, I will either have to drill holes down into the rock big enough to set the posts in, or set them flush against the stone "wall" where it drops down into the ravine and drill bolt sized holes into it to secure the "post" that way. I'm sure its clear as mud now 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for the info on the type of atone though. That will prove to be helpful if I go that route.

This one is hard to tell since it's an older video... We do use goPros on just about every job that you see and I believe Weston would have been using a Pansonix GH5 for some beauty shots!

That's a lot of mulch. How did it all hold up after rain? Also, why would you not put filter fabric beneath. Seems that should be standard under all walkways and patios.

This was sold as just stepping stones on top of the sub grade. If you'd want an actual flagstone walkway, then absolutely yes we use separation fabric

Nice job! I'm in central PA but likely to far for Tussey to help me (near Lewisburg). Question and maybe idea for a video, How do I find a quality landscape place? All of KZbin Land can't live in Altoona and be where Tussey can do our projects. So for the rest of us, how do we find a quality company? Is there a certification or industry memberships a company should have that helps to designate them knowing their stuff? I mean besides asking for some references and maybe checking out their similar past jobs how does a homeowner know if they are dealing with a quality company , amateurs or worse yet shysters?

Great idea. I need to make a video like that... The best way to find out is take the time to go visit their past work in person. Certifications can be a sign of credibility, but I've seen 'certified' contractors that created a very poorly constructed product. The number one thing I would do is go see their projects, 2: talk to referrals (their past customers) 3: read their reviews. If they don't have any it's a red flag, double your homework on checking out their past work
