What a Friend We Have in Jesus - story behind the hymn

Joseph M. Scriven's beautiful hymn of Jesus' friendship was born out of a life of tragedy. And the song was almost lost in history! Thankfully his friend chanced upon the lyrics, and now we can be comforted by the beautiful words he wrote.

1 What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry

2 Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?

Can we find a friend so faithful
