Gillie, I'm writing you because of your declaration you weren't going to watch IU because she's "Kpop." This obviously has a bad connotation for you, so let me try to open your mind a little. I'm a lifelong rock n' roller who discovered Kpop a couple years back and was amazed. First, I was amazed at how hard Idols train. Many of them undergo years of 12+ days of singing/dancing/rapping lessons. "Blackpink: Light Up the Sky" is not only a great doc about the girls, but also looks at how hard they all worked and their emotional struggles deciding whether to stay or leave when they watched friends tearfully leave while they wondered if they would ever get to debut. IU is also a very special case. She was a rags to riches to rags to riches saga. She was rejected over and over again, finally landing a trainee slot but her family went broke in the IMF crisis and IU went through this time living on potatoes with her grandmother and brother. Now she is universally loved and respected in the Kpop community, not only because of her talent, but because she's never forgotten how it feels to be broke and has an ongoing program of contributing large chunks of her considerable fortune to local charities, schools, and clinics. (She's also very dilligent about her contributions and I understand the contributions come with the stipulation her lawyers keep an eye on the books to make sure the money is spent properly.) Apart from that, Kpop is really a startling evolution of pop music outside the American cultural constrants politicising our music. Kpop is a giant blender of Pop, R&B, Rap, Techno, Dubstep, and everything else. Kpop songs will switch genres multiple times in a song so you're always driven to see what's next. One of our heroes is Jeon Soyeon, a tiny woman told she was too short, too ugly, and not talented enough to be an Idol. Today, she's acknowledged as one of the most talented and creative singer/songwriters/producers/creative directors in Kpop. Her group, (G)I-dle, has been steadily gaining in popularity and their range is a good reason why. They can go from dark, iconic songs like "Lion" to blazing rockers like "Tomboy" to completely goofy but irresistible songs like "Dumdi Dumdi." (Soyeon and teammate Miyeon also sang the "League of Legends" characters Akali and Ahri in K/DA's "Pop/Stars" and "More." I've been pestering the Coaches to do K/DA because this is a group that not only has Banger songs, but is a virtural group with stunning animation going along with their songs. I'm not kidding when I say Every Reactor that goes into K/DA cold, not knowing anything about them, comes out with their mouths hanging open going "Who are these people?" and "What's next to listen to?" The black reactors are the most fun because they're all blown away by Soyeon's machine-gun speed raps. She's actually the official world's fastest rapper having been clocked at 8.3 syllables a second on one of her songs. Haven't heard any of them bitching yet about "cultural appropriation" - they just love that this tiny Korean can fearlessly go toe to toe with any of them and win...) So I really urge you to open your ears and give Kpop a chance. I think you'll be very surprised at how good the music, and how nice it is to root for good people like IU and Soyeon to succeed. Check out the songs I listed and see what you think. And, btw, to plug IU's other gig, you should check out her series, "Hotel Del Luna" and "My Mister." HDL was actually my gateway drug into kpop since I was blown away by IU's acting, decided to check out her music, and down the rabbit hole I went. Hope to see you here...

IU's Live Performance is legendary. During this live show, IU truly differentiates from the pack as 1. The live version is better or at least as good as the studio version 2. IU's technical singing capability is more evidence in the live version 3. IU puts more emotion into her song when she sings live 4. IU's interaction with fans are legendary I've went into the rabbit hole 3 years ago and have been awed with IU's artistry as well as with her personality. If I want to make a recommendation say, top 5 or 6 live performance of IU that one must watch, I believe they should be these:- 1. IU Killing Voice (which you have watched) 2. Last couple of weeks IU has been releasing some more live clips from her world tour concerts that are also a great listen. Basically everyone says that her lives are even better than her recording versions which says alot considering how great her albums are (I heard there's even a saying in Korea that goes something like "There are people that never went to an IU concert, but there's noone that went to only one" to showcase how crazy her concerts go)

Should add that one time IU took a pay cut so she could give a raise to her support people. She really loves her people, but it also makes sense businesswise since she's created a very well-oiled machine where everyone knows their jobs and can run without her constant corrections. For someone who has to deal with so many things over all her projects, this is a such a help to her that it can't be overstated what a smart manager she is...

You should see this in bigger "landscape" of k-entertainment : -this is from Dec 2019, she's on her 11 years career (debut in 2008) as pure female soloist (not from group). But you can see, she still could draw 14.000 fans in 2 nights. This is so rare, only her can so this. -her fandom is from all generation and so diverse, unlike usual kpop fandom, who mostly come from around same ages . And many of them are "normal people", not avid music fans. -she also did acting projects, and before this tour she did My Mister (2018) and Hotel del Luna (2019). Both are mega success with different genres. Imagine a lead actress of popular series, singing and perform in arena concert like this.

I discovered her in Hotel del Luna in 2019. She's so good and mesmerized in her eye acting. thats why I got interest on the actress. And watch her other kdramas And when I search her on Google I was shocked that the girl Jang man Wol/lee ji an was a singer and she's not just a regular singer but a legendary singer in Korea. Best female soloist and digital monster in music and the nations little sister of SK. And tried to listen to her songs. In love to her voice and got comforted to her self written songs and poof I'm addicted to her. It's been almost 5 years since I become a fan. 'Black Out' is a b-side and 'Last Night Story' from one of her remake albums. Her interaction with her team in that clip is so much fun - from memory they surprised her by joining her on stage to do the choreo - and neither track made the Killing Voice, so you would be reacting to new material as well. Thanks again for this reaction, this is KSPO dome, used during the Olympics for the gymnastic events. It holds 10k to 12k when configured with the floor sports area. IU team used a 360 degree stage so no back or front and managed to pack 15k UAENAs there. IU is so good. She has such a wide discography I can't say that I love every song (because I don't) but a lot of them are great songs. Every live video I have seen from her is just insane. But she will have one at the world cup stadium at her last world tour concert in south korea and that is 50k + thousand people will attend sold out. Toldja she is the Queen.... You want to see the show to end all shows? Check out the live opening "Eight" from IU's " now-legendary The Golden Hour" concert. Jaw still drops at looking at the crowd. IU has always admitted she's very shy when she's "off-duty" and around people she doesn't know. You don't have to review it so you might just go watch it, but there's an episode of Lee Hyori's Bed and Breakfast show where IU stays for a weekend with them and they also invite a couple of other girls and just do normal shit like cooking meals and hanging out, and it's fun once she relaxes and just gets to be a person instead of the multi-responsiblities global business locus. When you think about all the balls she juggles on a daily basis, the stage is actually one of the few places she can just go out, be her singing self, and sing. When she's doing something like "Blumming," you can see she's relaxed and enjoying the audience's spirit as much as they're enjoying her. I think it's nearly impossible not to watch her perform and fall madly in love with her as a fan.

You're going to get an army of recommendations for things to react to from IU, as her discography is so massive. In addition, she has done so many genres and styles, so it gets complicated. In truth, all of the songs from her Killing Voice are worth reacting to on their own... HOWEVER, that was just a sample so don't stay with those alone. In fact, I would argue that many people's favorite songs from her weren't even included in those, such as Love Poem, Dear Name, and Lullaby to name several. What's great about IU is that she's diverse enough that it's okay if you check something out and it wasn't for you. Something else will be. And further, she writes her own songs, so you know with each one that you're getting to know her more intimately, so you appreciate songs even when they aren't your thing. Whatever you react to next from her, best of luck as you begin your IU journey. EDIT: And yes, despite her gigantic reputation, she is a pretty humble person. She truly appreciates her fans and works extremely hard - even putting on concerts that last 5-6 hours - to showcase how much they mean to her.

Blueming is the 3rd of a 4 part story. Live especially IU live is great. But to fully appreciate her as a song writer and story teller you need to watch the MV's as well. There are several that multiple part stories told over 2 or more songs. The story that Blueming is part of a starts with You & I in 2011. Part 2 is Above the Time which is part of her Love Poem Album along with Blueming released in 2019. Part 4 completes the story with Strawberry Moon released in 2021. Another 2 song story includes Through the Night and With a Determined Heart to for Forget You (which is actual a cover of a song by a famous Korean Folk singer. Off her current mini album she as a 2 part story that starts with Holssi where she tells her fans that she has decided to see how high and how far she can go. It is herc1st MV filmed in the USA which is significant to the story. Because she is the 1st Kpop pure soloist (meaning that she has never been apart of a group to perform arena concerts in the West. The only other Kpop singers to perform in the West have all been parts of successful groups who tour in the West and built up fans bases through their group. Part 2 is the song Shopper which continues that story in Holssi where she declares she us going to win and in Shopper she is de laring victory. She has released live performances from her current tour (Seoul concerts) of Love Wins All, Holssi and Shopper. That are incredible. But if you haven't seen the MV's for these songs you are missing a lot. There are also 2 videos of her recording Love Wins All and Holssi where you woukd see IU the artist at work recording while she is sick. This was her 2nd time using the Olympic Gymnastic Arena. The first had a more traditional stage, with the audience in front of her (10,000). This 360 configuration allowed her to get 14,000 seats. For her World Tour performance, the band is outside the stage and I read she was able to get 15,000. She has videos on her fan site for the fan chants. The fan chants for Shopper (World Tour) is LOUD! She said her ears started ringing during the song, and, were still ringing after the concert. Because she uses these Olympic venues, camera positions for videos are great. All her official live videos are top notch. If you ever watch a live video where she looks like she's wearing casual street clothes, that's from her encore.

Although it's very very close, I think IU is a better actress than kpop performer/singer. Her acting range is incredible, but then again she controls an audience like no other and what a voice. I have to mention this: IU did what I'd brought up before - she let the backing track take over, but took the mic away from her face so that it was obvious. Fans don't have a problem with that. She's a great performer and understands how to do things. I'll add that, if an artist can sing live, they will sing live, because it's easier than lip-syncing. They sing for a living, they've practiced that song a hundred times and sung it who knows how many times, so why lip-sync and risk the thousands of hate comments if you mess up? Sorry, I'm off topic a bit, but this constant drumbeat of dumb accusations annoys me. ;) You guys are approaching 20k and, in spite of what everyone else is saying, I think that's great. ;)

I don't know about her crowd size, but Rock n Rio is generally 350,000. And Moscow used to have a "Peace" festival where the crowd was a million. Personally, I prefer to be in the same town with the performers.
