I rather have this over a pool. Never have I imagined a huge pond/mini beach (with fish in it) to be in someone’s backyard. This is a dream come true and it is brilliant to have this type of idea. This creation got me so Excited

When I was a kid I wanted a pool with sea lions 🦭 … in some parts of the world, one can keep otters as pets… so my new dream is to have a creek and swimming hole with otters 🦦 in them. I just found that place. Can’t imagine I’ll be able to get a hold of some otters… but, when I put it all together, it will be otter ready. lol

My grandpa had a pond dug off a marshy creek on his rural new England property. The CCC dug it for him for fire protection, so it cost him nothing. Since it was already in the watershed it was maintenance free. Rope swing for the win!

Hey Greg. Can you make a video about what to do when it gets hot outside. I live in Central Texas and it has been 105 for months and want to know what to do with Koi and algae.
@GregJoshuaW Жыл бұрын
You need to add depth (I know "too late for that!") but once you get 15 feet down the thermal mass of the Earth really cold the water efficiently. Barring that, you could try to retrofit misters in the pond. This will increase water evaporation so you'll need to watch your water levels, but it should cool the water several degrees. The only other affordable option is to add shade. I feel you, summer is unbearable in this heat.
@GregJoshuaW Жыл бұрын
"cools the water

@@GregJoshuaW Thanks for the advice. Its only about 5 feet now with a liner so that would almost be a complete redo. We have two chests with ice (80 pounds a day) just slow draining it into the pond now, but the temp will not get down past 85 during the day. We even put dye in the pond because I heard that works. Looks like I will have a big project before next summer!! I'll ad some more shade today. thanks again.
@GregJoshuaW Жыл бұрын
You could experiment with an idea. If you have access to land nwar your pond (and the ability to dig deep) you could make a thermal radiator. The idea is you bury water line deep in the earth and run it similar to a radiator. Some use a concentric circle layout, others do the typical up / down run. The point is to create enough surface area with the warm water running through the pipe contacting the earth near it for the Earth to absorb the heat from the pipe radiator configuration, the pump just needs to push water through it from the pond back into your falls or stream which then flows back into your pond. The deeper you go, the cooler the Earth gets. IDK, you can't redo the whole pond but this idea might save you all that ice work. I hope it works out for you, hot areas are very challenging. If it does, please report back how effective it is!

Why aren’t there more contractors in south TX? Is the climate not conducive to keeping natural ponds? I spoke to someone that told me that these rec ponds just don’t work here, but I would love to find out if that’s a true issue. It is quite hot here, 9 months out of the year. And algae is an issue I’m sure. I have wanted one for so long.
