I'm Russian, lived in Canada for over 27 years and love to recreate meals from my childhood. I noticed that some things you don't translate - don't know if it's because you don't know the English equivalent or just to use the correct term. But for those who are wondering about some of them: tvorog - "farmer's cheese" or "dry cottage cheese" "squares of toast" - croutons "sausage cheese" - closest equivalent I found here is smoked gouda cheese "cornflakes" - cereal? prianiki - type of gingerbread manka - "wheatlets" or "cream of wheat" Russian rye bread is actually rye sourdough, not just yeast rye bread

Amazing video! Very nostalgic for me :) it reminds me of my grandmas cooking. People in the comments: what is wrong with carbs? we are past the eating disorder mentality. Everything in moderation is good, she has amazing portion sizes and everything looks healthy and balanced. What you fail to understand is that in Russian and in Europe products and food contain way less sugar than the US so we can enjoy to eat these things cos ingredients are more natural. Just look at Italy! Carbs are not the devil!

@@mfcabrini I personally dont know a single Russian with diabetes, like at all. But met several Americans with it. However, the sugar consumption in Russia is too high. On the other hand, the US takes out the fat from many products like yogurt and adds sugar whereas Russians consume it knowingly. And Russia is much colder so people do ise up more energy.

Very surprised with the high carb and sugar diet. I grew up with a Russian family and they were more into fruits, berries, whole grains, meat and LOTS of onion, peppers and salad. But they were farmers, as we are, and maybe from other area of Russia. Love the soups!

Interesting. I was born in Poland and in my family we didn't ever snack but had a substantial two course dinner. Rarely any sweets and breakfast was usually scrambled eggs, fruit and veg.

@@axa897 so many of the Russian movies I've seen have Russians eating whole potatoes, but they skin them. I also eat them whole (on my busier days), but leave the skin on as it is very nutritious. Perhaps Russians eat a potato variety with thicker, harder skins, though.

I have KIev store by my house that i go to every once in a while and pick up things that i think i can cook. ive tried the Russian dumpligngs in a chchicken stew. They are so tastey! maybe you could show another recipe with them. I have also tried the Russian kilbasa. They are not as processed tasting like the kilbasa over here in the states. Hello from Texas, I'm 45 and remember how distant and scary the Soviet Union looked like to me as a kid growing up in the 80s. I was so fascinated by the serious looking, non-smiling Olympic gymnasts that I would see on T.V. I'm so grateful for videos like these! Thank you so much! Thats because your media always showed Russia in black and white, grey skies, and winter, when it is sunny most of the time. Russians are just more introspective while Americans are more outgoing. If you knew Russians you'd know that they most resemble Texans. We're patriotic, we're loyal to family, comunity, and country. We don't let fear get in the way of fun. Our sense of humor is critical but warm. We love freedom. Granted, America has freedoms Russia doesn't. But the US doesn't have the freedoms that Russia has. As an immigrant, the US freedoms don't matter to me because they are not catered to my needs. Like with any country, its all about priority.

I really enjoyed this. My ancestry is Russian Jewish. I think the meals were very balanced. The whole anti-sugar/carb thing is just a fad. People who are anti-sugar forget that fruit contains a great deal of it, and carbohydrates are a food group vital to the healthy functioning of the body. The problem is the current American diet of processed foods in vast portions often eaten last thing at night. There are plenty of fruit and vegetables in the Russian diet. The family also sits down to eat, which aids digestion and encourages respect for food. The meals spread through the day discourages snacking in-between. The spiritual aspect of home cooking (even just some dishes) with the family sitting at the table is such an important lesson in today's world. Thank you for sharing this with us.

@beata- I disagree - we have similar cuisines (i have visited Poland), - in Russia we also cook bigos, stuffed pancakes (like Polish naliesniki), mince cutlets (like kotlety melony), blood sausage (like kaszanka) etc etc etc. And of course pierogi of all kinds- only we call them vareniki.

Hello 🙂We are from Hungary and live in Germany and we just discovered a Hungarian shop about 1,5hr away from us. Previously we went many times to Russian supermarket because you have so many things that we have too ,my most favorite thing is the pig lard with onions and the flavor of roasted meat 🤤And the twarog snack what you had on Tuesday look so delicious. We have them in Hungary too,but they are kept in the fridge,smaller and sold in 5 packs,my current favorite is with marzipan and poppy seed😊

For the crust: 50 g of butter, 100 g of sugar, 1 egg, 1/2 tsp of baking powder, approximately 200 g of flour - bake it at 180 degrees Celsius ( 356 F) for about 15 min. For the cream: 2 tbsp of sugar, vanilla extract, 100 g of 33%fat cream, 3 egg yolks - mix in a pot on medium heat. Keep stirring until it thickens. Add 100 g of butter. Put cooled cream into the crust, put fresh berries on top, leave the pie in the fridge for some time. Enjoy🙂

@@hellothere274 Of course lots of people of Russian/Ukranian ancestry eat it, but it's not available to those who are not. I would like to try someday even though I don't like the taste of beets (they taste like dirt (soil) to me). I'm sure the sour cream helps make it an appetizing meal.

Every Russian family has different habits. For ex, my breakfast may consist of scrambled eggs with tomatoes, sausages and cheese. Also I very like boiled eggs. In other days we eat sandwiches or porridge. Lunch most often is really a salad or chopped fresh vegetables, soup or meat with a side dish. There is often no poldnik, I can just have a snack at any time before supper. Supper is often meat and potatoes, pasta, buckwheat or rice. I rarely drink fresh juices or water, usually a lot of coffee and tea, but it's not so healthy... P.S. Yeah pel'meni are perfect when you are very tired and too lazy to cook

I was a little surprised by all the amazing looking soups. I did not associate Russian cuisine with soup. I like how you start the day with sweets. You get the good stuff in first. I think a lot of people are focusing on the carbs but your portion sizes are much smaller than in the US. People become phobia about different foods thinking that omitting will make them health or thinner but most of the time there are no bad foods….we just eat too much. Also the breads and the grains make sense if you live in a place than can be cold and where you are working hard. Thank you for sharing.

Our diet is not perfect but that's the way it is. I know Russian families who eat much more sweet and baked stuff. And we also have overweight people in Russia. Just like everywhere we have people obsessed with eating healthy and people who are simply enjoying food.
