What A Sensory Shutdown Looks Like

This was hard for her. We've been to the Flounder Pounder many times and Abigail has always done well with the noises and the environment but something about today she just couldn't handle. Sometimes we have to cut activities short when she's experiencing a sensory shutdown like this one. What an autism sensory shutdown looks like.

Let me know if you have experience with sensory shutdowns. It presents as basically the opposite of a meltdown behavior-wise but it's just as difficult for Abigail. It often cuts our activities short but that's ok. The important thing is that she tries.

You handle it SO WELL! You’re so in tune with your Abby.💖 It’s a beautiful thing to see a daddy love his baby girl like that. Having empathy for her during those times is EVERYTHING. I have zero advice because no one could know what she needs better than you guys. 💖

I've had shutdowns; mine are more criticism triggered than a sensory issue. It feels the same internally as a meltdown, but I'm completely frozen and unable to communicate until it passes.

FatheringAutism the opposite of meltdown... hmm I don’t think we’ve experienced that.
@suzithewitch

I think your theory is spot on. I was reading something from a guy on the spectrum, and he said, "Imagine you're floating with no sense of up and down. At first, it might be relaxing, but after a while it's just freaky scary. So you do anything to help you orient yourself. Take off your shoes to feel the ground. Touch walls, furniture, people, everywhere you go. Anything you can do, so you don't feel lost again."
@melancholymistress89
@melancholymistress89 5 жыл бұрын
As someone on the spectrum, I can say that's spot on. Even sand and snow can be difficult because it's constantly shifting. Most people don't notice that even well-fitting shoes constantly shift as well, but steady ground on bare feet is stable and connected and just feels safer and better.
@melancholymistress89
@melancholymistress89 5 жыл бұрын
@Alexandra Desirae I love the TEXTURE of sand, and like sticking my feet in it or feeling it, but I can't walk on it unless it's wet because it's constantly shifting. I don't know if that's a grounding thing or a poor balance thing, though.

maybe when abby is on a dock or a wood floor near a dock, she feels vibrations and instability under her feet. you know how a dock feels, even it's secure it's still a bit wobbly. perhaps she's very sensitive to movement.

I honestly wish all autism dads were like you. When I had a meltdown or shutdown, or showed any signs of my autism or anxiety, my father would get angry at me. He'd walk ahead of me holding my younger sister's hands and act like I wasn't with them. He even left me alone in the middle of a zoo once so he and my sister could continue having fun without me. That just made it worse because on top of sensory overload I started having a panic attack from being left alone in an unfamiliar place. Your videos often make me cry. You accept and support your daughter wholly and completely, while my father (and even my mum) acted like I was just being a brat or a bad child/person on purpose, and therefore deserved to be punished...

i deal with chronic pain and chronic illness and shortly after becoming ill, i started noticing that I was struggling with sensory issues. I’ve struggled with some minor sensory issues my entire life. tags on clothes. food textures. things i think are fairly normal. but the sicker i got, the more i struggled. when we went to the movies, i would become over stimulated very quickly... especially with IMAX and/or 3D movies. bright, flashing lights, loud music, the unexpected reaction of those around me (specifically out of my peripheral vision), being short and not being able to touch my feet flatly to the floor, etc. etc. when i was already dealing with a lot of pain... caused me to become over stimulated. the best way for me to cope was/is for me to lay in a dark, quiet room in a soft bed or chair and just decompress for a little while.

When I first saw Priscilla crying, I thought it was because she was sad to be leaving her children behind but now I read in the comments the real reason for the tears - those were tears of joy over a much desired victory. Abbie made me want to cry, it is so hard to see her struggling and not really able to explain why. But, of course, her parents understand and are able to do what is necessary to calm her down. So touching.

That environment is so sensory overload :( I have spd and for me it’s that underneath background noise that makes my brain shutdown. It’s the overwhelming noise of hundreds of people talking, plus music or speakers, bangs and crashes, it’s too much for me and I’m guessing was too much for Abbie too :( I use noise cancelling headphones for it. I’ve used the regular hearing protection ear muffs, as well as motorbike ear plugs and now I use in ear noise cancelling that also play music :)

I had one sat a poetry event recently and I'm 34. There were sounds I couldn't see, I was nervous already about some social stuff in the room, there were instruments being played at different points of the room and all of a sudden my anxiety kicked in...some people were eating food in tinfoil, kids were shuffling around, a door opened, all of a sudden I stated noticing everything... people picking their fingers or sniffling or a phone vibrating....it was so hard to focus and I wanted to hyperventilate but I breathed slowly called an Uber and left after the 2nd song. Now that I understand my SPD I know when its okay to leave

That's really interesting about her needing to be grounded. I agree with the “sensory overload” comments. That PA system was VERY LOUD! Coupled with all the background chatter, conversations, boat noise, etc. it is certainly understandable that she was uncomfortable. Also, could be what Asa said, or maybe a combination of things. You two amaze and inspire me! We are and we know a lot of autism parents. Stay strong. Be well.

I have times like this as well. Sometimes I will go to the grocery store and leave a full cart of groceries in the isle because I just have to get out. I don't know why, but it happens.

I haven't had a sensory shutdown in about a year. But for me it starts as a meltdown then turns into me just shutting down, not responding to anyone, sometimes crying. I've tried to explain to my boyfriend, we've been friends for almost 5 years and together for almost 5 months, he's only ever seen a small meltdown before. The last couple weeks have been so crazy that I can feel a sensory shutdown coming and I'm nervous for it to happen with him because there's not much that can help except quiet and darkness, oddly enough I lay on the hard floor too when I'm having a shutdown, usually in a corner because it makes me feel more secure.

I have a boy that will not go into buildings because of the floors. He will go into 711 for a soda and maybe a fastfood place because he knows he will get food! I took him into a store just to walk in turn around and out. He had different plans when he saw candy and plopped right on the floor at $54 of candy bars and 3 hrs later he decided he was ready to go. He is 6'4" 34 yr old vs a 5'2" 60 yr old....

Love seeing people that know how to interact with Abi! If you see someone acting 'different' dont judge them they may just have a different way of doing things then you and that's ok :-)
