The only engine that ever seized on me was a 1976 Ford Pinto. It actually threw a rod and the came through the crankcase wall. It happened in the country right in front of a guys house who had the exact same Pinto that was smashed in the rear. He was a mechanic and I paid him $500 to install the engine from his wrecked Pinto into my car. I drove that old beater two more years until I finally finished school and got a decent job. Bought myself an 80 Plymouth TC3 hatchback. That car didnt last as long as the old Pinto.

This just happened to me. I had the car for two days (well 1 and a half). It ran fine, no ticks, or knocks of any kind. The ride was smooth and quiet. Middle of the second day, while I'm on the freeway, the car is riding perfect. A few miles in I noticed that every time I let up on the gas the speed reverted ever aggressively, so I was very near the off ramp and got off. When I got to the top of the ramp there were three or four soft ticks and the car shut off. That was it. 2010 Chevy Traverse. When I tried to turn it on all the power would go out and there was no sound. I'D turn the key back to the off position and the power would resume. I just had to laugh, but I also had to PEE. So I couldn't laugh too hard or (puddles). This nice lady, at a house across the way, asked if I was ok. I screamed that I had to peeeeeeeee. After a good laugh she let me her home. It was a beautifully kept Detroit tri-flat. Anyway that was my story. Well other than I had to give my brother the bad news that the car he'd given me had to go to "That lot in the sky", "The island of misfit vehicles" 💀

I was skeptical because I've had A LOT of experience with cars where the engines went out or was going out. There's many many months of knocking and ticking before it finally goes. I will be transparent in saying these were old cars. I dont have experience with 2010 or newer vehicles giving out. There may be no warning at all with more recent vehicles. I dont know for sure, but my mind just wouldn't let me settle that the engine was done. So in the end, I sold the body. There was no fix for the Traverse. HOWEVER about two months ago my brother's 2009 Dodge RAM did the something similar. It ended up being something with the key fob going out.

something to watch out for is if your starter is "sticking" it could stay engaged and fry the battery of blow a fust or do some other crazy stuff. Happened to me on my 1986 f350, the battery was very hot after the terminal exploded off.

My 98 started using oil at about 60K miles. Supposedly it's the pistons that don't have enough drain holes for oil to run back down into the crankcase and the rings stick in the grooves from the coked up oil residue. I ran Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase and it has helped unstick the rings somewhat but I'm sure some of it is just wear. Instead of rebuilding or replacing the engine I just keep it topped up and at 142K miles still no clouds of blue smoke.

@spelunkerd I've heard a thousand or so bad starters go "clack" this one sounded a bit different from the get go. When you start working on cars you don't check the fuel gauge first on a no start for example.... then you get in the habit of checking that stuff just in case. I checked the oil first before the starter. It's an easy test worth doing first. The main give away was the sound.

The 98-02 1.8 1ZZFE engines are bad about early oil burning. Mine goes through a quart every 1000 or less depending on weather and driving city or highway. I keep it topped off and oil is much cheaper than an engine rebuild or replacement. I hammer it quite often and none the worse for wear. Of course people need to keep an eye on oil level to prevent something like this from happening. This one looks like no one ever checked the oil level in 15 years.

Heard this on a mazda 3 that went through a huge puddle, hydrolocked and wouldn't start, locked up wheels in gears when pushing and wouldn't be turned by hand. seen this again on a 3.8 buick v6 ecotech in a holden commodore, spun a rod bearing due to low oil and not regular enough oil changes (not my vehicle). it was started, I heard a knocking sound which was slow at first but it was rod knock, vehicle was turned off, attempt at turning it back on yielded a click from the starter and nothing else.

A bad starter will also show the same symptoms....Make sure to inspect the engine and make sure that you don’t have improper mixture of liquids (coolant) in the engine or damaged internals. IJS

Sounds like a starter motor to me. Get a socket on your crank bolt and see if it will turn. Check the oil too.

I have a 1999 camry that threw a rod. It spat all the oil all over the road. When the car got towed in it was able to drive to the rear of the mechanic shop with it smoking badly. After that it would not start anymore. It didn't make the single clack sound then give up it would try and start but nothing. I got the whole engine replaced with a remanufactured one and it has been my daily driver for almost 7 months now.

That could POSSIBLY be your starter motor. Though, you said it was a potential seize. Therefore, it could be many things. If you drove it through water, or something of that sort, bet on a seize.

my step brother bought a 2000 Cadillac escalade, we were on the highway and the tranny slipped really bad, then the motor started to make horrendous noises. The motor banged, clicked, and squeeled. It had oil in it when he bought it 2 hours earlier, and when we checked to see if the oil had metal fragments in it, the oil was gone... the dipstick was dry. I checked the transmission fluid to see if that was low as well.l, it wasn't. We called my father, who lived close to where we broke down, he brought 4 quarts of oil for the 4.7l V8. it took all the oil, and the engine refused to start, again making the metal on metal wailing sound, and knocking/banging. My step brother and I limped it off the highway to a nearby hotel, then the motor started to smoke, furiously. I checked the oil again, and it was gone... I had put oil into it 3 miles before. I checked the transmission fluid and it wasn't red, it was brownish gold... the oil had leaked into the transmission somehow.

Yep, that's the sound. So what if you literally just rebuild the engine (reman crankshaft, new bearings and gaskets, crosshatched cylinders, checked rings valves lifters etc) and it turned over by hand to install the torque converter but won't turn now? Marvel mystery oil in cylinders, no plugs, timing set, and starter pulled?

one thing I noticed when looking at used cars is many economy cars get economy maintnence and luxury cars get proper maintnence. very rare do I find a Cadilac that hasnt had the oil & trans fluid changed but econo boxes 9 out of 10 are neglected

I have a 97 Ford ranger that seized on me. I poured "marvels mystery oil" inside the spark plug holes and allowed it to soak for 24 hours. Surprisingly, I was able to break the engine free using a breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt. Starts right up now. And its so for sale lol.. 1997 ranger stepside.. red. $1400 :-)

Well.... glad that's not my problem on my car. Mine wont even make a clank sound, when I turn the key all the lights in the dash turn off like if the battery was disconnected. No click sound or anything. I checked my engine with a wrench on and started to turn the engine manually andnit turns with no effort at all. Maybe my starter? It's a 2002 Buick Park Avenue Ultra. 144k miles on the odometer. Still trying to figure out the issue lol battery is strong too.

Penetrating oil in the cylinders through the spark plug holes wait at least 24 hours. Then take a wrench to the crank pulley back and forth untill it turns freely.

Aldo the engine seized. I was able to get the timing belt off the camshafts, and the crank is stuck. Tried all methods of moving the crank with a torque wrench, power tools. Engine is done

@@lucianoromero777 I'm in a similar situation as you are but I think my engine's timing chain got stuck or snapped. I can still hand crank the engine to a certain point then it stops. I can't check anything unless I pull the whole engine from the car and check the timing chains. What do you think?

Aldo I would take the timing covers off and see if a belt is snapped and take one of the timing belts off and see if all of them turn, it could be just a bad head cam not allowing you to turn it. Turn all of the overhead gears and then the crank and see which one is the culprit.

I have 1999 toyota Camry and my car just cut off going down the interstate. I had a mobile mechanic that ive used 2 times before for oil change and brakes. At first he said it was my battery and alternator I said you can tell by just looking at the alternator and he said yes. Now my car will turn over and make a sound but not like the one in this video. Then the mechanic said the timing belt was broke so he replaced the timing g belt and water pump and I don't know why he replaced the water pump. But still my car will not start but continues to turn over and make the sound and it sounds like the alternator to me. The mechanic said that because my timing belt broke that now my head is blown. However I reasearched 1999 toyota Camry and can timing belt going out affect your motor engine and it said no it dosent. So if that's true how can I tell if it's my starter or battery or alternator?? I had a new battery in the car but when this problem happens it drained my battery and had no Moe life the mechanic told me and their was acid leaking from the battery and he said that's cause the alternator was bad.

I cant believe a corolla 1.8 seized but then again they ran it dry of oil. I have a 99 now at 300 and something kms. and a 2000(at 386,000kms a few years back. Both cars lasted me at least 6 years. They have a piston ring gap-issue that allows them to burn oil when the oil control rings stick.

@@getrightconstruction1342 not too weird. Here in Canada everything is in KMS, just Depends where the car is being sent for final sale. Some come back over the border. My car had to have a import tag showing it was from the states but re-registered for use in canada because the laws are different. Lile daytime running lights are required where im from by law, the car had to have a relay installed. I work on cars for a living. We get a lot of imported cars that require an inspection to see if it complies or not. Most of them i can change with a laptop for Daytime running lights. Technology is great sometimes. Ive alsonhad to install daytime running light modules on older cars.

Aldo long ago , one of the right cam cldr get problem I didn’t know , I bought cheap Chinese fan attached to the intake manifold, after a few engine raving it dead ( completely seized ). Bought another one low mileage ej25 .

My friend had a 95 Toyota Camry and the egine locked up on us driving down the road we didnt know it was the engine at first, first thought was the starter and when that didnt work we tried the alternator which didnt work as well so we took it to my mechanic and he called the next day saying the engine was no good and it had locked up and that he could put another engine in for 1,000$ labor included but also told my friend that its not worth it because the car isnt even worth a 1,000$ lol but understood if it was sentimental haha but my friend did the right thing n sold it to the junk yard

Did you try turning the crankshaft manually with a breaker bar just to try to see if a seized motor can still spin freely…? I have an engine that does spin freely when turn with a breaker bar but when starting by key, it’ll turn very slow and click. Haven’t replaced the battery yet though…car has been sitting with a dead battery for over 6 months. Just been jumpered!

Hey bro my 99 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3 liter is doing the same thing but it has oil in the motor my wife was driving it and a light came on that said check engine pressure and then it just shut off and won't start up

why is it that I can turn my flywheel an the crank turns but I can't turn it from the crank bolt but I also get that exact sound and with no serpentine belt on I still can't get it to turn over. But again I can turn the flywheel with a screwdriver
