Kamikaze tactics weren’t adopted by Japan until October 1944. That zero that crashed was most likely already going down.

@@davemarshall9322 true, there were lone wolf kamikaze pilots who would intentionally crash their planes into ships when damaged. But the actual tactic used with planes strapped with explosives and whose primary objective was to crash into ships wasn’t employed until 1944 at Leyte Gulf.

@@davemarshall9322 They chose to go kamikaze at Pearl Harbor because they were either gravely wounded or their planes were too damaged to return to their carrier. The kamikaze attacks in 44-45 were deliberate, no matter the condition of their planes or whether they were wounded or not.

@@davemarshall9322 Yes, pilots were to crash into enemy ships ONLY if their plane is so badly damaged that it will not be able to return to the carriers anyway. If you have to die there, it's better to pull the enemy with you. Even the Americans at Midway tried to do such a thing, which shocked the Japanese. This is not the policy of the Kamikaze units, which launched a suicide attack. The Zero mentioned in the series was in fact a bomber "Betty" and hit the Eliot precisely because of the damage.

When I suggested that you might consider taking a short break between BoB and starting The Pacific, I was thinking of the much higher level of violence that you will see in this series. This first episode gives you a good glimpse of how different warfare in the Pacific was from Europe or North Africa. I do not know how many episodes ahead you have watched, and I do not want to spoil anything, but this show does an admirable job showing how much more brutal and deadly combat was for Americans in the Pacific than in the European or African areas. Far more Americans died and were wounded in the fighting in North Africa and Italy and France than died and were wounded in the Pacific, but the rates at which men were killed and wounded was far higher in the Pacific than in Europe. In Europe, the casualty rate for each 1000 men deployed per day was 1.75...in the Pacific, that number was 5.5...the death rates were even more uneven, with .36 deaths per day per 1000 men in Europe to 1.78 in the Pacific. So please be prepared for this show to somewhat accurately reflect those killed and wounded rates being so much higher.✌

The naval battle that the marines watch from the hilltop at night is called The Battle of Savo Island. To this day, it remains one of the worst defeats in US Navy history. Only Pearl Harbour is considered worse. The Japanese force consisted of 5 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, and 1 destroyer. The American force consisted of 6 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, and 7 destroyers. The Japanese force caught the Americans by surprise, at night, and it caused chaos. The American ships were careless and lazy with warnings they had been receiving, failed to communicate with one another, and one ship, the USS Chicago, actually fled the battle with only minor damage, and didn’t warn the others that the Japanese feel was approaching. The Japanese were very tactical and organized with their attack, and in most cases, rendered the American ships unable to return fire before the American crews fully knew wtf was going on. The Americans lost 1,077 sailors, 4 heavy cruisers sunk, 1 heavy cruiser heavily damaged, 2 destroyers damaged, and 1 destroyer sunk. Contrasted with the Japanese, who only lost 58 sailors, 2 heavy cruisers damaged, and 1 light cruiser damaged. The overwhelming American defeat at Savo Island lead to a board of inquiry, which severely scolded many in command, and lead to a lot of changes in the US Navy surface fleet going forward. The captain of the Chicago ended up shooting himself before the inquiry was published. As big of a victory for the Japanese as Savo Island was, the Japanese commander, Gunichi Mikawa, missed an opportunity to press the attack and destroy the American landing force on Guadalcanal. Mikawa was afraid of American carrier air strikes the following morning, so he retreated under the cover of darkness, a decision he was later criticized for. Unbeknownst to Mikawa, the American carriers had already retreated well out of combat range, and he would have had free reign to destroy the American landing force. His failure to do this allowed the Americans to establish enough of a foothold on Guadalcanal and “dig in”, so that they stood a fighting chance against the Japanese banzai charges. These banzai charges had been very effective for the Japanese during their last 10 years of conquest. The 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal were basically some of the first to ever stop the Japanese army.

If you havent been in a tropical jungle, you cannot imagine the heat, the humidity or the smell. You sweat constantly and everything sticks to your skin and collects in crotch, armpits, nose, under your fingernails, in your hair. If you are fortunate enough to get a shower, that wonderful clean feeling ends when the shower ends. Now, add the unbelievable, unbearable stench of rotting flesh and the dense fog of flies you cant see thru. Let that ferment in your mind a minute or two while you figure out how to keep those flies off your food and out of your mouth...

There was a veteran in the prolog of episode 1 I don't remember who it was off the top of my head but he said and these words are stuck in my soul "I knew four guys who committed suicide because they were four f they couldn't go"

Here are a couple of answers/comments regarding things you wondered about as you reacted... At around 13:15 you were wondering if they used real WW2 landing craft...and they did. They used pretty much the same fully operational landing craft that were used in filming Saving Private Ryan, as I understand it...and their engines work fine so they did not have to be towed. The small number of craft were filmed and then digitally copied and pasted with CGI...again, as I understand the process. 19:59 You are correct when you comment that the Americans are inching forward, but perhaps not in the way that you think. In this early phase of the Guadalcanal campaign, the Americans were primarily focused on defending the partially complete Henderson Field from Japanese attempts to dislodge them by air, sea, and land. When we see the Marines moving forward in this episode, it is for the purpose of finding the most defensible positions to form a large perimeter around the airfield...which is why we see Leckie and the men of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment digging in to wait for the enemy on the bank of that stream. Yes, they were patrolling and setting up observation posts, but those were meant to determine when and where the enemy was going to attack and not really as an offensive move towards the Japanese troops on the island. At the start, for the most part, it was all about the stress of waiting for the enemy to make their moves, and not knowing when and where exactly they would be coming.

Not gonna lie, I typically subscribe to someone when they start Band of Brothers, then unsubscribe when they're done lol BUT the Pacific AND Star Wars Rebels headed our way? I'm not going anywhere 😂😂😂 BTW good call on watching Rebels. If you want to enjoy the show Ahsoka coming in August, you're gonna need to watch that series. 👍

In reality, the plan to take out Pearl Harbor was sound, from their point of view. If they were going to start a war in the Pacific, they needed their back door shut. The US Navy was the back door. Problem is, they actually failed. While the US was hurt, the Japanese did not take out what it needed to. Left Pearl Harbor with the means to repair and refuel. Yamamoto, the architect of the attack on Pearly Harbor, found out later that the declaration of war was not delivered on time, before the attack. He wrote in his diary: "“I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”"

This series is much more about the brutality, and, dehumanizing effects of the war, than "Band of Brothers" was. William Sadler is playing an absolute LEGEND of a man, by the name of Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller. The most highly decorated Marine who ever lived. Marines everywhere still say, "Goodnight, Chesty, wherever you are.", before they turn in at night.

That is not a .50. It's a Browning M1917 .30 caliber, water cooled MG. It would be replaced later in the war by the M1919 air cooled version, which is still in use today.

Actually the attack on Pearl harbor was very smart it's just the fact that it didn't go as planned. If the Japanese attack would have gone perfectly then it's likely that they would have been much more successful, what have still lost the war more than likely but definitely would have had way more time to expand their empire not to mention they would have greatly weakened the American naval fleet. It would have made it much harder for the Americans to stop the Japanese and the Pacific War probably would have lasted much longer which is kind of what the Japanese wanted because they wanted to cause so much difficulty in so many casualties that the Americans would call for peace.

Those were cigarettes he put up his nose.. he couldn't stand the smell. You could imagine 2,200 dead bodies rotting in the sun wouldn't be pleasant.. Marines killed over 2,200 Japanese in the 12hrs the battle lasted. Marines lost 32 men.

Japanese soldiers were known to mutilate their enemy dead, and prisoners. Oftentimes, they would cut off the head and place it on the chest with *other* severed parts stuffed in the mouth. The brutality in the Pacific was unflinching.

This series is fantastic. I love it equally with Band of Brothers, though it's a very different series. You see the extreme cost these men spent to accomplish victory. The battles in the Pacific aren't as well known as in the European theater, so I feel it's very important to watch these.

Your comment about a person's a person no matter what side your fighting on to me I don't subscribe to that philosophy in the pacific war. The japanese were extremely brutal and especially towards POW's because of their bushido mentality. You did not want to be taken prisoner by them period. So in my opinion the marines that were just winging him is fine by me war is hell and in my opinion losing your humanity and compassion is something that just happens and in the case of the pacific theatre it is more than justified.
