Stairway DENIED! Back in the day EVERYONE learning guitar learnt that opening riff and then played it in EVERY guitar shop! It got so bad it was banned in every decent Music Shop. As referenced in the movie Wayne's World and there are some really funny videos of a guy doing the rounds trying to play Stairway To Heaven and immediately being stopped dead just a few notes in! 😂😂😂

I like your reactions to Zep, but to REALLY understand what they did, and the monumentality of it, start with live on Dutch TV. The album wasn't even out yet. Look it up, you'll see what I mean. Don't get me wrong. Studio Zep is beautiful, but live is better. More visceral, I could go on and on. And just so you know, yes, I'm a guitarist, a composer. I take these things seriously, but I never went to any sort of school for them. Study the albums in order, and listen to the live tracks. Zep often played a song live first, and worked out the arrangements, based on the improvisational live performance, before they did anything in the studio. Btw: I recently discovered I was born the same exact day that that performed and were credited as "Led Zeppelin".

It also means "no shelter" which is where that meaning stems from (give the enemy no shelter from attack). In this song it's the shelter meaning, they are marching across the winter landscape and there is nowhere to stay. The same meaning was used in US rules about military, free citizens can not be forced to provide quarter for soldiers, mainly because in Britain they would do that and we found it annoying, so we specifically forbid it here.
@helenespaulding7562
@helenespaulding7562 Жыл бұрын
@@Spudz76uld like to disagree, very politely. Yes, there are two meanings to the phrase. But the lyrics refer to a military operation where a few brave warriors are being sent secretly ( They take the path where no one goes) on a desperate mission to try to get a message through the lines. The fact that Robert sings “They ask no quarter….They GIVE no quarter” in my mind, takes it away from the shelter meaning and puts it firmly in the “no mercy” meaning.
@heliotropezzz333
@heliotropezzz333 Жыл бұрын
@@Spudz76 It's also no shelter because if an army captured live prisoners they would have to find them shelter (or find them quarters in other words). Giving no quarter is a euphemism for taking no prisoners.

The album version of No Quarter was the perfect framework for live improv performances of the song. Zep never played any of their songe the same way twice live. There are numerous live performances of No Quarter that went 20+ minutes. one might lean heavily towards Page's improv skills. Another features JPJ doing an extended free-form piano solo. So the rule is: Never assume you've "heard" any Zep song just because you've heard it once. Different performances of the same song are totally different, each totally captivating. Peace, little brother. Welcome to the Led Zeppelin vortex. I've been listening to them for 50 years and their music never gets old.

Yes….same singer, Robert Plant. Special effect on his voice. I don’t know if you’re familiar with JRR Tolkien and The Lord of The Rings books/ movies, but Robert was an avid fan and in this song you can hear references to Tolkien. When he sings, “ They take the path where no one goes”…it is referring to the Paths of the Dead that Aragorn took.

I was fortunate enough to have grown up in the 70's listening to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd. I got to see Page & Plant perform together as well as Pink Floyd, AC/DC right after Bon Scott died and Ozzy Osbourne right after Randy Rhodes died. So many great rockers have come and gone since them and they are being replaced by great Japanese ladies like Lovebites, Nemophila and Band-Maid to name a few. It's good to see that rock and metal have stood the test of time and are in great hands for the future.

As a die-hard Zep fan, and also a deep respecter of Tool, I will say the their cover is definitely an homage but they make it their own. The Zep original is more mystical I think, in feel with that lovely piano by JPJ in the middle. The Tool version is about power. Tool had the benefit of 20 years worth of technological development in music, and of course, being a metal band, it’s gonna be harder than then “rock” version. Tools bass and guitar just really dig in hard.

The big difference between early and late Led Zeppelin creative material is of course rooted in their fame. "The first four" is their classic catalog that everybody knows, but it's a fair guess that the insane aspects of wealth and fame got to them well and good, including a loss of fundamental reference value systems. What would you do if you could get everything you wanted? That sort of thing. Rock bands were very indulgent in the 70s. Not least Led Zeppelin. That's why I personally prefer their late material. They were troubled in a whole different way. There is no longer the raw "caveman" hunger for fame, but there's still an almost desperate need to create art.

The live concerts from MSG (Madison Square Garden ('73 is my favorite) are exceptional. They can be better than the studio versions. Hi it's hard to say whats my favorite song of zeppelin is to many good ones to pick but in my top 3 of their songs would be since I've been loving you live at m.s.g. in 1973 that whole concert is off the charts good.

I prefer the live version but the best thing about you doing the studio version first is that when you will watch the live one, it will be a other first time: because the lives versions are never played the same way. The best example of that is Dazed and Confused; the studio version is 6:29 & the live one (Song Remains the Same concert ) is 28:56.
