You need to see Jonathan Young as Frollo. He embodies the character like no one else I have ever seen do Hellfire. He has one secret weapon - the ability to be convincingly both menacing and completely disturbed. His demonstration of the inside of Frollo's broken mind is bone-chilling and 1000% convincing! Being a Tolkien lover, you really need to watch Colm do Misty Mountains in Khuzdul, I don't think there's another artist out there who has translated it for song, and then sung it like he's actually one of the mountains.

Multiple listens, finally realized what Colm's growl reminds me of - we're hearing the wild animal inside, barely caged by a clenched throat and sheer willpower as the priest's thin veneer of civility slips away.

Just stumbled across this video, so please excuse my late comment- but the thing I absolutely love about Colm’s performance here is that he’s singing this song like it is a musical, he’s not just singing, he’s playing the part of Frollo, he almost stumbles into the blind rage and then collects himself, putting on his cold, almost marble like facade again, his voice trembles in uncontrollable lust and anger, and then he cast the light from hell red to heavenly white in a swift motion, and that growl really gives me the feeling of the beast (both animal and the devil) hunting it’s pray, it’s drooling with hunger - I hope that you will see this comment (even though unlikely after 3 months, but I have a feeling that’s what you also saw in this)

Not sure if DJ will see it, but I go back and check comments on my requests all the time 😂. This and Jonathan Young's Hellfire are tied for favorite covers of this song.

His cover of Rains of Castamere has got a lot of that growly low tone in it too, really cool display of his range in that one

You are so right about the narcissism--I have always felt very uneasy about this song, and that explains it. This villain is one you could meet walking your dog. I love Tomi P's version too, but I think Colm is scarier, especially with the lighting and smoke at the end.

So shocked you literally could not even~😂 And yeah; Colm's vocal flexibility and range is insane. From a sweet, soulful tenor, down to a gravelly, growling bass. Listening to him sing for the first time is such a wonderful mindf*^k~🤣🤣🤣

This was stunning! The song is creepy as heck anyway and it felt like Colm was threatening every single girl who turned him down...made me genuinely nervous! 😅 Loved your visceral reaction and I'm so thankful you went back and replayed parts so you could remember what you wanted to comment on. It meant that I could listen to those parts again and really feel them along with you. You're amazing DJ, stay true to yourself #DJAntlers #HerdLove #HerdMind

Yes Tomi's version is also great but for me nothing beats Jonathan's version - so theatrical and emotional; it really brings out the confused and disturbed nature of Frollo.

I know I am late to the party here, but this was awesome. Fabulous job DJ. I hadn't listened to Colm's Hellfire, simply because I love Tomi P's version so much. So, thank you for introducing this to me. Colm is incredibly, surprisingly, believable as a villain. I had no idea Colm was such a good actor. If I saw this version of him coming down the street, it might be time to leave town! And, I have Colm down as a very nice man who just happens to be incredibly talented and can sing like an angel. And apparently a demon...

This is an interesting take and the first time I've heard this one. I do prefer Jonathan Young's version as it's a bit more theatrical and he conveys a bit more crazy, but this is frightening and incredibly believable. My hat's off to Mr. McGuinness all the way. O.o

It looks like you might have had your socks blown off by this! Looking forward to seeing how you cope. 😂 Whilst I do really like Colm's version I still, personally, don't think you can beat JoYo's version for theatricality and emotion - really want to see you react to that as I think you'll be absolutely floored by it!🤣

@@TeahVickery I agree. For me JoYo can't be beaten for "Hellfire" or any of his covers and is originals are also incredible! The 'religious chanting' at the beginning - you're right on the mark, actually. The chorus is singing (part of) the Confiteor, a prayer from the Catholic Mass. Confiteor Deo omnipotenti (I confess to almighty God) Beatae Mariae semper virgini (to the blessed Mary ever-virgin) Beato Michaeli archangelo (to Michael the Archangel) Sanctis apostolis omnibus sanctis (to the holy apostles and all the saints) The choir continues as Frollo sings: Et tibit Pater (and to you, Father) quia peccavi nimis (that I have greatly sinned) cogitatione (in thought) verbo et opere (in word and deed) Mea culpa (Though my fault) Mea culpa (Through my fault) Mea maxima culpa (through my most grievous fault) The use of this prayer in this context is masterfully done and adds true _layers_ to what's happening in this song. I _love_ this sort of thing in _The Hunchback of Notre Dame._

The background singing is called Gregorian chanting. And when you get to Tomi P´s version of Hellfire you get the full package: him dressed in Gregorian priest garb, one man a capella chanting. Also Tomi actually going to F1 bass note to F6 soprano and back again to F1. Yeah, 6 octaves!
@circusoftheastounding4361 Жыл бұрын
The Open "chant" is The Confiteor which a traditional Roman Catholic prayer.
