Scott - The best advice/video I can recommend for someone new to DM'ing is Seth Skorkowsky's video "How to learn a new RPG system - Running RPG's" it is part of his "Running RPG's" playlist. You should really check out that playlist, I've found it to be a very useful one for any GM and any RPG system. Because he tries to not focus on a single system his advice is designed around system neutral concepts which are applicable to most, if not almost all RPG games a DM could run.

Regarding the question of what is D&D's version of the Space Marine, I would say that it is either a one shot adventure (single session adventure and your done), or the basic dungeon crawl (Room to room, to room just fighting monsters, getting whacked by traps, collecting loot). Since both formats tend to be simple, you can focus on learning the basic rules without having to think about how to present a complex multi-session adventure. Just let them fling the magic missiles at the darkness and go woosh woosh with the swords and maces. And at first level, there's nothing like taking on a dungeon full of goblins, skeletons, and other low level mobs. Also, no first dungeon experience is right unless you nail them with a rust monster and watch that purty armor go poof, and then let someone walk straight into a gelatinous cube for the sizzling skin feeling. It's a right of passage, and hilarious when it isn't your character :)

1:10:00 It's High Marshal Helbrect, of the Black Templars, who has a servitor polishing his sword as he's stabbing an ork on his base. He's also got another servitor holding his gun, so he can pose dramatically without worrying about it. Dude is insanely badass. Also marines are canonically dirty and worn down fairly often. Sometimes they go on crusade for long periods without resupply or support, and have to improvise or make due with scavanged weapons or gear. Basically there's no wrong way to paint your toy soldiers, lol.

Another cracking episode guys. It is always nice to just hear why people enjoy the things they do. Funnily enough I actually made a video a couple months ago called "Why You Should Paint A Space Marine" and it is exactly what Jon was talking about with painting his ultramarine. I don't overly like space marines, but I find huge value in painting them from time to time.

I haven't painted in like two years. I don't play or paint war hammer type games. I just paint my board game minii. I've got three monsters from The Rising Sun by CMON to finish, and I just dropped and broke the head off the earth dragon. Ugh. But I've been so busy. After we moved, I haven't really painted anything, and I focused on my garden instead. Watching you lot makes me want to paint again. After I'm done reorganizing my hobby room which is filled with all of my abandoned projects [including plants, diamond painting, wax melts, canning jars, and all sorts of kind of tornado of crafts] I will have to return to finishing my monsters. My desk is torn apart because we shoved a murphy bed into the room to give me more space [for my lemon trees.... I have a problem. It's called hobby collecting] so... I might be a few weeks, but I'll love to go back. I miss it.
@Hawkseir8 ай бұрын
I agree with the Ultra Marine comment. I've been putting them off for ages because all my friends told me "Your models will be dead to me if you paint them." But after painting them, and going to a new model, I found super growth in my painting skills. Afterward, and before (granted), I thought, "Just paint... because those who study photos and paint once, will always perform less than those who paint 20 times, and study that one photo while they paint." I guess the moral of my story was just paint.

It sounds as if you are going into Fantasy Flights Star Wars Force and Destiny as your first game. Yes, you will want to run the intro adventure and I recommend marking it up. Highlight what you need to in each section so it draws your attention to see it fast. There is something a bit more important to understand about its system vs. others though; it's not a straight succeed/fail, it's a spectrum of success/failure. Meaning you can succeed with a complication or fail with an advantage and so on. Get to know that about the dice mechanics and then go back and watch a few of the movies with that in mind. Do that and if you can recognize it in the movies then you'll be able to get that feel of a Star Wars atmosphere. It's a bit tricky at first because you are so use to the binary effect of a dice roll in the majority of games, in the "Narrative Dice System," the dice act as an active player in the game helping to create interesting outcomes.

If you did the lightsaber black but dabbed a thin layer of mod podge or liquitex gloss medium over it you would get a pretty crazy effect, especially if you mix a drop of black contrast in with the liquitex; it takes a little playing around to figure out how much to mix this, but you can do like 4 or 5 different ways just on a hobby mat and pull it off after it dries (works for fire with Army Painter Zealot Yellow REAL nice).

Definitely paint Vader as though he never turned evil. Imagine he talks to Mace and they confront the emperor and during the battle Anakin commits to the jedi. He and Mace are overpowering the emperor but Anakin makes a mistake. Palpatine goes to deliver a killing blow but Mace jumps in the way and sacrifices himself to save Anakin. Anakin is beaten and weak but throws himself off the side of the building Mace is blasted out of in the real Canon and manages to escape with his life. The emperor escapes and flees immediately to Mustafar to pivot his plan since his identity is going to be revealed. Anakin is the only one close enough. He sends out a signal to the jedi explaining what happens but his pride is too strong. He doesn't wait. He chases the emperor to Mustafar and challenges him again. He unleashes his rage. He's been beaten, manipulated, embarrassed. He takes everything that males Vader strong but he wields it with the resolve to serve the people as a jedi Knight. He wounds Palpatine. He wants to deliver the killing blow but he knows he should bring him in, reliving the moment he slayed Count Dooku. But in his hesitation the separatists arrive to help Dooku. In a moment of distraction, Palpatine, who had previously been begging Anakin to spare a weak old man screams "Power! Unlimited Power" and assaults Anakin with a surge of force lightning. The blast causes Anakin to lose his footing and he falls down in to the lava of Mustafar. He wakes in a sterile white hospital room. Obi Wan is watching anxiously as medic bots try to repair the extensive damage. They say he will survive but he will constantly need prosthetics. The first thing Anakin says is "Obi Wan. Where is Padme? Is she safe?" Obi Wan wipes the tears from his face and he says "yes my friend she is safe. She is being attended to by doctors on Coruscant. She fell suddenly ill and went in to labor but help arrived immediately. She is safe. Anakin, your children are safe. A boy and a girl. Padme is waiting for you to return home to your family so you may give them their names together. It is time for us to go home."

If you google pictures of comic book Magneto (wears red armor) there is a bluish-white lightning effect in a lot of the images. This would be a good lightsaber color a red Darth Vader. It's also similar to Anakin's original lightsaber color so it fits into an alternate lore. Just my 2 cents.
