Petite refers to height being 5’3 or under, not thin!!!! Ive never seen a tall thin woman shop for petite clothes and petite clothes come in 0-plus sizes. The clothes are hemmed shorter for petite sizing. Brandy melville is not for all petite girls, just skinny girls🤷🏾‍♀️

I don’t agree with Brandy’s one size thing but I tend to shop there because I am very small and it is one of the only brands I can shop at without feeling like I’m an ugly twig and need more curves to be beautiful. I don’t think people take into account the smaller people on the other end of the spectrum when taking about Brandy’s smaller sizing. I obviously don’t agree with their smaller sizing but I’m going to buy their clothing if it is one of the only brands that make me feel comfortable and confident about my body. Sorry for the rant lol loved the vid.

I'm so glad someone said it. As much as people talk about how hard it is to find clothing on the larger end of the size spectrum it's just as hard to find it in an extra small. Alot of stores dont even carry xs and that's so annoying. Wish there was less "skinny" shaming in general.

Agreed. I feel like the message of both of their channels as a whole is that no two bodies are shaped the same, regardless of the number, and that we should stop judging each other (and ourselves) for not looking exactly like everyone else.

Sierra, you said in your last video that people tend to comment on your body saying you "look more like a 14", a video from Carrie just popped up on my front page where she tried on sizes people says she is. Maybe if you did a video trying on size 14 you could show people that you obviously know your body and your size better? I think it could be fun to show them how size 14 truly fits on you! 😂

I wouldn’t have guessed Carrie and Sierra were the same size because, as they’ve said in their collab videos thus far, they’re proportioned so differently. I am shaped more like Carrie and I can’t button anything smaller than a 12. I am not curvy though. I’ve met plenty of women who “look larger than me” but also wear size 12’s.

Yes. But their marketing strategies are the issue. I see no problem in a one size brand, but I see an issue In: 1. No diversity. Most models and workers are white and blonde. 2. They don’t market towards “smaller or petite women,” they market more towards teenagers and young adults in some cases. And that size range is COMPLETELY over the place. 3. Their models aren’t healthy looking. Most are very underweight. Take American Eagle for example, their models have diversity (all skin colours and tones) and their bodies are REAL. The naturally skinny, thicker girls, plus size, athletic, EVERY ONE. I shop from brands like that. ✊

I think a big point is is that there are not many teenage girls shopping with friends who are excited to go to torrid or another plus size store, and the petite girl feeling left out. It’s smaller girls getting excited about brandy, and there bigger friend is left out. That’s shattering for a teen’s self confidence.

People in the comments talking about how damaging it is for a store to only cater to a specifically small size, but remember- not all females who are size 00 WANT to be that small or smaller. They may have the same body image issues as someone who feels overweight and can't fit into "standard" clothing in "normal" stores. This store gives those girls an option. Just because someone is "small/tiny" doesn't mean they're a bad influence to young girls. They just want clothes to fit them, too. #bodypositivity #allbodiesarebeautiful

Abigail Barnes petite means short, not necessarily thin (common misconception). Petite sizing caters to shorter arms, legs, torsos etc. You can be petite at any size. But to your point I’m not that upset about a store that caters to thin women as we do have stores like Avenue that cater to bigger women and stores like Fashion Nova that cater to curvy girls.

I don't see any issue with a shop that caters to size small, just as I wouldn't see an issue with a shop that caters to a larger size. I feel like if this video was flipped and it was a very small 'skinny' girl going in to a plus sized shop and criticising it, saying that none of the clothes fit her, it would be considered very rude and offensive. I don't consider this video offensive at all, but I just feel like there is a little bit of a double standard.

I've gained some weight recently and am maybe a size 8 now, and none of the cute skirts they have there would even go past my thighs. I also tried on a sweater I've been eyeing for a while and well, it "fit" technically, but it was so tight and uncomfortable and just didn't look the way it was supposed to. Overall, miserable experience, and I'm not going to buy jewelry there anymore because they just suck as a company.

And in case you can't read, there is literally a comment from a size 0 person in this thread… who couldn't fit into Brandy Melville clothes. The problem is that they're not even a petite clothing store, like how there are specific plus size stores. They don't even claim to carry clothes for petite women anywhere. They're a brand for teen girls and young women. And they sell clothes in one arbitrary, tiny size. They're a store unofficially catering to skinny girls, not petite girls. And that's inherently problematic and causes self esteem issues for so many impressionable young girls who think that something is wrong with them because they can't fit into these clothes, and that is fucked up.

Now individual designs that cater to one body type or another is one thing, but if every piece in every collection every season every year is only considered good on one set of measurements, then the designer is showing limited ability in their work. the same can be said for brands and designers that cater to only plus size. or only to womens clothes or only men's clothes. they probably can design for other demographics but they chose to focus on one group. much like a doctor. they all get the same basic training but they choose to specialize in a certain area. theres nothing wrong with wanting to cater to a certain demographic. there are other places to shop at. no one is forcing you to shop there. to say their brand is damaging to young girls isnt fair. thats on the parents for not raising their girls to be strong in their own skin. you shouldnt allow a brand dictate how you feel about yourself. no matter the age or size.

I’m gonna say that when I was in middle school, I was really skinny and couldn’t gain weight. Which may not sound like a problem but it was getting to be a problem because I couldn’t “eat enough” to put on weight because that would be unhealthy too. So seeing a store that caters to young and small girls isn’t a bad message (in my opinion.) I get not everyone is the same body type so definitely “one size fits all” isn’t going to work but bashing a company because it doesn’t cater to everyone’s body is unfair. Also think about how everyone knows that when they walk into Brandy Melville, they know what to expect. That set them apart from other clothing stores...was it the best strategy, maybe not but it got them well known so it worked for them.

Brandy Melville is a store for thin, petite girls. That's kind of the entire idea of the store, just like torrid is for plus size women who have trouble finding cute plus size clothes, brandy is for small girls who have trouble finding cute small clothes. Believe it or not it's actually really hard to find xs clothes, most stores don't carry that size anymore because americans are getting bigger. I get how a "one size fits small" store can be harmful to impressionable teens, but at the same time I don't get why someone who isn't a size small/xs would even go to that store when they know none of it will fit them. There's nothing wrong with not fitting into petite clothing, but there's really no point in complaining about something not fitting you that clearly wasn't made for your body type.

Because when you’re a teenager. Other girls can be really mean and awful. When all of your friends are wearing brandy and you are the only one who can’t because they only have one size. That is really hard on you. For example say a group of friends went to the mall and they went to brandy and They all got cute matching outfits and you couldn’t get it cause it didn’t fit you and you couldn’t size up. That is absolutely deviating . I understand it’s hard to find those really small sizes but they should still have sizes that rang alittle. Like go up to a medium or something. The marketing and mindset of brandy is not okay and very hurtful to so many girls. Especially their main demographic being teen girls who think that they have to fit into those tiny sized clothes to feel cool and fit in with their friends. And not be left out.

coming from someone that is like xs-s and like 00-0 i am very thankful that brandy has cute clothes that actually fit me cause for exemple in regular stores the smallest skirts tend to fall and at brandy they fit perfectly and like i get why people hate the “one size fits small” thing but us small girls also need options.

I love Brandy Melville, even though I don't fit any of their pants. It's definitely not made for ever body type but the same thing goes for other brands. Also I really enjoy the "one size" system, since once you know how it fits your body, you can literally just grab things without trying them on. In my opinion, I don't think Brandy is trying to separate certain body shapes from others, it is just a concept store with a specific kind of branding idea like any other store.

What’s wrong with being skinny? As long as you’re healthy (physically and mentally) everything should be fine. Body positivity isn’t just about lifting up “curvy girls”. Skinny/thin/slender girls need and deserve love too!

I don't think they were saying its bad that they cater for skinner girls, I think they were saying its bad that they ONLY cater for skinny girls, especially because its already hard to find larger sizes in regular stores. Sometimes I like Brandy because they cater to thinner people that may not have clothes that fit them in regular stores either, but then sometimes I think they're just trying to cash in on that exclusivity and ideology that beauty is thin. I don't know.

Elise Johnston I think the problem is people see it as a petite store but it’s really only for one size which is XS-S which is fine to me because it fits me, but I think if they spread out their sizing then it would take a lot of the backlash away. Like XS-M because petite means more like you’re short rather than skinny. You can be an XS or a L but if you’re both under 5’4 you’re still petite

I see no problem with having a store that caters to thinner people. However, not every thin girl is the same size/height. If BM wants to cater specifically for thinner girls, they should still have multiple sizes. Having one size is just being lazy in my opinion

If that's the message that you got from this video then you clearly didn't watch most of this video or any of Sierra's other videos. If you do watch her videos, then you must not listen very well because that's not what anyone was saying. Sierra never thought there was anything wrong with catering specifically to skinny girls. Obviously everyone needs clothes and I understand that it could be difficult to find clothes everywhere. However, if a store wants to do this, then they should advertise themselves as a petite clothing brand. Brandy does not do this, and instead claims to be "one size fits all." By them only making a size xs/s and saying that it should fit everyone, this is purposefully excluding every other size and making people think that their size isn't normal or right. This makes girls of other sizes feel ugly, or fat, even if they are just a size medium. Plus size stores on the other hand are marketing and advertising themselves as for larger people. They don't claim to be "one size fits all" they are simply trying to represent people that are typically not represented. Another problem with Brandy is that their clothes are not actually any smaller or more fit to petite girls than a size xs/s would be at any other store. If Brandy was making clothes in like a 00 or 000 which are rarer sizes, and marketing themselves as a petite store than maybe the argument of including smaller sizes could be relevant. However they don't do that rendering any argument of "inclusivity to skinny people" utterly irrelevant and incorrect. Any size you buy there I guarantee you that you could buy at Target, except at Target it would have inclusive size tags and a much lower price. Everyone deserves love, you were right about that, but if you really wanted that, then you would actually listen and try to comprehend what people like Sierra are trying to say. Companies like Brandy are most definitely not trying to spread positivity, love or inclusivity.

I definitely think they're catering to "skinny", not petite, and that's not a good message. Even then, the items are not all gonna fit right on a "skinny" body. A friend of mine's body type is taller and skinny, but half that stuff probably would've been a crop top when it should've been a regular shirt. Just producing different sizes, even XS to XL, would make such a huge difference! Until they do that, I won't be dropping a penny on their inventory. (Also, thrifting is just more fun and special!)

@@ilianastenovitch the thing is, us skinny people have a lot of stores that cater to us. I can literally go to the kids/teen section of most stores and pick up a t-shirt or even jacket because I'm skinny and also about average height at 5'5. These people that aren't really thin but also not really is sized have a hard time in most stores. My older sister is one of those people too and finding something that acty fits her is a frustrating ordeal.
@katiejo11
@katiejo11 5 жыл бұрын
@@ilianastenovitch That's fair, but when you think about it, almost every store caters to a smaller body and pushes that image onto younger people. I get that people can't control their size a whole lot, but deliberately just having a one size when you're promoting on trend looks that a lot of different body types will want?? Not the best publicity or message.

Kat Jo people keep saying how many brand cater to smaller sizes, but I feel like people think just having a size small is enough. Idk why but I never fit into clothes in normal stores, the proportions are way off. Brand Melville clothes fit like a true small or XS, which can feel amazing when I usually feel like my body is messed up because of my proportions. I understand people’s frustration in the lack of size diversity, but it’s really nice to have a store that really fits me. It can feel degrading when you fit in little kids jeans better than women’s, it’s nice to have real clothes you know

@ingridmyers2708
@ingridmyers2708 5 жыл бұрын
I feel like being tall and skinny makes it REALLY difficult to find clothes. My inseam is 32” and most jeans brands don’t carry that length, and if they do it’s usually their “tall” size and even then the waist usually doesn’t go below a 29” (this is true for Madewell, among others). Additionally, I am a size small in tops, but most size smalls assume that the rest of you is also very small so the arms and shoulders/bust of shirts is super uncomfortable but if I size up the shirt just looks too big and I lose my shape. With dresses the smaller you go the shorter they get so I just have to sacrifice the proper fit of the dress to not show my butt. I have the same breakdowns and shopping struggles as many others and it bothers me that people always say “oh well everything is made for tall and skinny people” because it’s not. Sizes are done proportionally where in smalls everything is small and in a size large everything gets equally larger, when not all bodies are like that. I think clothing is just hard to make for everyone and hard to shop for. I think Brandy Melville’s problem lies in their branding, if they specifically targeted size smalls and said “look we made this for you” not as many people would mind, idk why they don’t. I’ve had really good luck buying clothes from them and very few other places, plus it’s all made in Italy which is nice. I get the frustration though, I just wish they marketed differently.

Thank you for doing these videos especially on the true “SAD” message that the Brandy Melville continues to portray. I remember when my beautiful daughter so wanted to shop at this shop as a lot of her fellow classmates were shopping at this this shop. My daughter was entering her senior year of high school when she wanted to shop at Brandy Melville and unfortunately at the time I had no idea what this shop sizing was about. I learned very quickly that I personally didn’t like this store and what it was doing to girls and their self esteem. My daughter who was 17 at the time left the store disappointed and hating herself. At that time I gave my daughter the biggest I hug I could and repeatedly told her that she wasn’t the problem, the company was. I assured my daughter that she was the right size for herself (she was then the average size for girl her height and cultural background)I was very angry with company’s poor sizing standards and what their poor business practices were back then and sadly it appears their business practices haven’t changed for the better. My daughter returned to Brandy Melville a few months ago as she had hoped that she would be able to fit into some of their clothes as she has lost weight and still had the same difficulties has she had experienced 3-4 years earlier. Again, she had fit into clothes as before but the fit and comfort was non-existence; and for the money the quality too wasn’t in place. I’m thrilled that my daughter has grown into a very beautiful young lady and has confidence that Brandy Melville hasn’t been able to take away. Also, I wanted thank you both for doing these styles of videos and sharing to your audience that size indicated on a garment may not fit all and that it is okay for that as “We All are BEAUTIFUL”!!!

I appreciate this video, Sierra you looked amazing in the fitted long-sleeve shirt and I wish stores had more inclusive sizes, but as someone who is exactly the size of 99% of Brandy Melville clothes, I like that there's a store catered to people who are my size (at most stores my size always seems to run out first). I follow a few plus sized women online and I'm always a little jealous when they shop at Torrid and I know i can't have those cute, high quality clothes because they just dont have any clothes in my size. It's unfortunate but you cant hate a company for not having your size. That being said, Torrid should make small sizes and Brandy Melville should have bigger sizes so we can all be cute and matching together haha.
