I can't believe I never realised what actually happens when you open your film camera and expose a bunch of film. I thought it was all totally ruined but it turns out I'm a dumbo.
Still don't understand? Take a look at this article that I wrote yourphotograph...

Today my Friend opened up my camera because she didnt know that you are NOT supposed to do that. I told her to hold it for me as i looked up how to rewind the film properly with this camera (i'm also still new to this) she just opened it. I shut it close as quickly as i could... Then i rewinded it, but the rewind knob got stuck so i thought it was all back in the roll. Suprise: it was not. (This also took place in a mall, very loud and i tried to not get angry at my friend) I got so so frustrated. I ended up rewinding it correctly after that and sent it out for development... With still some little shimmer of hope. I had to many nice moments captured on there. Moments that meant a lot to me. I'm doing a one year of photography project and now one and a half months could potentially be gone. Just like that. Maybe luck will be on my side and Not everything is gone...

@@vibes8930 I can now finally give an update! i thought i posted an answer before... maybe i remembered it wrong or it got deleted. Well my picture were lost by the developers... I contacted the customer service pretty late because i'm in the middle of my finals and had other things to care about. Last week my pictures were finally found. Only digitally, the prints are still lost but thats okay for now. The pictures turned out fine! There are two that are totally ruined and some others have those exposure stripes but it actually looks kind of cool. In the end i was so lucky that despite it all i got the pictures and they turned out fine too

This is true! I've found the film is even more resistant when you're using cinema film that still has remjet. If it's the right kind of camera, I will sometimes intentionally open the door just a little bit to get fun leaks. I've had the unintentional openings lose as few as 2 or 3 shots, too. As sensitive as it is, film is still surprisingly resilient!

It certainly surprised me, now I’m just gutted about the times I’ve thrown film away because I’d opened my back up 🥴

@@maxkent Aww, yeah. Haha. I try to always tell people to just close it and get through the roll. Even if it's really bright and you froze for a moment, you might get something somewhere in the roll. I do that when I know I've screwed up while developing, too. Even if you are sure it's ruined, just press ahead because sometimes it's ok.

My first ever 35mm camera back at uni used to auto wind on the whole roll when you loaded it then every time you took a shot the exposed neg would go back inside the canister! So if you ever opened it by mistake your exposed shots were safe inside the canister. Genius!

We've all done it. I learned early on to flip up the rewind lever when I knew my camera is empty, so when I pick up a film camera, and the rewind lever is down, I immediately know that it probably has film in it.
@kswag

I believe for some cameras, the winder doesn't move when you pull the advance lever. I got a mini heart attack when I spent nearly a whole day with my AE-1 program and noticed towards the end of the roll that the winder doesn't move. Turns out for the AE-1 and AE-1 program, they're just made like that
@maxkent
@maxkent Жыл бұрын
I just had to check this for myself and I can confirm that the AE-1 does wind as you shoot with it, so I’m not sure what happened with yours haha. Any camera that needs to be manually wound back should show the winder moving when you wind to the next frame (I think)
@kswag

@@maxkent That's strange i remember seeing an forum post where they said the ae-1 isn't supposed to wind when pulling the level. There's also a film loading video where the winder doesn't move either.

Hey there! Hope you can help me on this one. I just finished a roll on my Olympus Trip S, I think I loaded the film correctly, given that the numbers on display would change, the engine would advance properly after every shot and after the 36 shots were taken the film wouldn’t advance anymore (I took an extra shot just to confirm it had ended indeed). When rewinding, there was a bit of resistance with the button and the numbers on display didn’t change for a while; then suddenly the display stopped on the number ‘20’ and by the engine sounds, it felt like the whole thing had unwinded already, but I’m afraid if opening the back of the camera to check it out, and ruining the roll. Got any tips on how I can proceed?

you could go in a dark room, maybe still with faint light coming from a street light or something and open the back, you should be able to see if the film is still out of the roll. i've done this before myself, and if the film isn't rewound then because its dark it won't affect the film at all

I took a full roll of 120 film(12 pics) with my Rolleicord V. I was winding and thought the winding was done but it wasnt. So the last image was exposed. I did this in a dark livingroom. Could it be the same with this type of camera or du you think its all ruined?

Hiya I’ve been trying to find an answer and came across this video - really hope you reply. I purchased a new Olympus AF-10 and tried to load the film but realised it wasn’t loaded properly - so after thinking it was loaded for a day I opened the back and actually did it properly and the film was fine - I saw the numbers change on top too so I think I’ve done it properly now - but I’m worried that the film is now ruined .. I didn’t wind it properly the first time and when I opened the back I thought I might’ve damaged it but will the film be fine as it wasn’t winded properly in the first place? Hope this made sense .. thanks!
@maxkent
@maxkent Жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes it should be fine. Just be aware that with the AF-10 it rewinds automatically once you finish your roll (after 24 or 36 pictures). When you open the back a small amount of film will still be on show, that’s just how the AF-10 is, so don’t worry, it should have still worked just fine.

That’s difficult because it’s unclear at what point the film became unconnected! Best idea would be to keep the camera closed and take the camera itself into a development lab to see if they can help

@@maxkent i shot the entire roll which was HP5 it just had disconnected once I felt I was at the end but I think I had tugged on it too hard… But what I saw was it was completely wrapped around on the taking spool, I know street lights are way different compared to the sun… I have a dark bag at home so I’ll be re-spooling it into an empty canister I have to tape the end onto it and get it developed only than scanned.
