New subscriber here. I've always liked 3M products. After seeing this, I'll never use their vinyl for wraps after seeing this. Luckily I haven't used it to date, from you video. I see nothing at all wrong with your technique. Would love to hear 3M's excuse.

Tech showed up a date late but just finished meeting with him, not very informative that’s for sure. Big thing (apparently) using a hard squeegee with a thin buffer and using a lot of pressure while squeegeeing, he also says that once you glass the panel the whole thing needs to be warmed up prior to install to avoid glue lines lmao

Possible mistakes are from the production of poor foil storage temperature, none of us knows who controls the production of foil glue, further from experience I know for 3M 2015 they had a bad batch of foil receding on the edges after 6 months, when I wrote them an email they answered for krajevd serves as an example. I have never tested the foils separately but I try to work them at higher room temperatures and after using the hair dryer to wait a moment for the foil to cool so that it has no lines under or from the glue, also use less force on the spatula and soft model.

Hi Christian, I've been wrapping for around 17 years so have a lot of experience with 3M. When working with 3M and other vinyls that seem to drop the glue when repositioning, before removing the backing paper I try to trim the panel as close as I can get it to the panel I'm wrapping if I know the vinyl is going to need a lot of manipulation. I would leave more excess material on the areas where I know I'll need to heat to get them to conform (for example on the top of the wing/fender your wrapping. I would trim the arch out closer to the wing which will let you get the vinyl down further without having to apply heat (before removing your backing paper). This will help remove stress from your vinyl in advance. When heating, heat further away from where you really want to relax the vinyl. This will stop the glue from rebounding at your fitted edge or anywhere the vinyl is touching the panel, which is the reason the glue drops and leaves a line. I know it's not ideal but when taking the top of the wing/fender over the best way to not get glue lines when there is a big stretch is either have someone hold the vinyl until you heat it and both pull over at the same time to get the vinyl flat and take it down in one movement so that you don't need to reposition which will leave start leaving glue lines. If you don't have someone to help then roll up a piece of backing paper into a tight tube, put some masking tape around it to hold it together and stick it to the excess vinyl at the top of the wing. This way you will be able to keep the whole section off the panel whilst you heat it and straighten it out and can then pull it all over uniformly. If any if this doesn't make sense or you have any questions get back to me and I'll try and explain other ways to help work with this vinyl. Even though certain glues are advertised as reposition-able they actually require an old school fitting technique like how we used to fit the original colour change vinyls that you only get one go at I.e. Avery 900 etc super thin, super brittle, bubble easily, drop glue, generally require two maybe three fitters to fit a complex panel...yeah anyhow you get the picture. Hope this helps

I’m in the industry for over 30 years now and used a ton of brands over the years. 3M has built quite a reputation when it comes to quality and let’s be honest, their stuff is priced like it’s the best on the market. It’s a given that their glue is superior in cast fillms, double sided tapes and painters tapes. 3M was one of the first to manufacture wrap vinyls and in my opinion were the best on the market back then. Not anymore. Nowadays I would always choose any Avery vinyl over the competing 3M product. The thing is that I always have to explain why because of 3M’s reputation because 3M is known as being “the best worldwide”. But “the best worldwide” shouldn’t break that easily when stretching it to the limit, shouldn’t end up with glue lines. In my experienced opinion it’s simply “the most overrated and overpriced brand”. It took me years to discover that I wasn’t failing, but the product was. Because I was used to trusting 3M’s reputation over myself. As far as I can see you are a perfectionist and built quite a rep yourself in showing all possible parts of the proces and even schooled me on some parts. There’s only one thing you did “wrong”: the choice of brand.

I think the problem definitely lies in the product itself. About 3 years ago I used 3m’s gloss black vinyl to do my roof and at this point I had never wrapped anything before. With that wrap the vinyl cam out flawless and absolutely no glue lines. Since then I have done several other different parts on friends cars just trying to practice before working up the courage to do my whole car. So about 4 months ago I ordered 3m’s gloss wicked wrap because I thought it was the best looking purple color on the market and it set me back about $680 for the roll. The same day I got the material I did my hood and I got glue lines ALL OVER. At first I thought okay maybe I used too much heat because I had noticed a spot where I overstretched it and the color had faded so I decided to try other parts on the car and then come back to it and redo it. I did my mirrors and got glue lines. I did my doors and got glue lines. I even did my gas lid and there were glue lines. Really. There were glue lines on a 6x8 square, flat gas cap with no curves or anything. It’s been very discouraging working with this material and I haven’t even finished the car yet because no matter what I try I end up with glue lines. I originally chose 3m’s gloss wicked because I wanted a purple color that was dark and wasn’t very in your face. I wanted a subtle color and it almost looks black which I exactly what I wanted. Now I don’t even know anymore, I almost just wish I had kept it white. If you can find anything out it would be great because I just purchased a new bumper and it has a lot of curves on it and it looks amazing but I know the glue lines will really detract from how it should look.

Just for anyone interested - I wrapped the front badge area of my car in satin black using 3M in 2020 (quarantine sucks) and I got 'glue lines' in quite a few areas. I know they aren't air pockets. No amount of lifting and replacing, heat or smoothing with squeegee removed them. Don't bother with 3M if you are a perfectionist, they haven't fixed their product even after years of complaints.
@15DjjC13

I think the problem is that you have an eye for perfection. You see every little thing. You see the car like a customer would their pride and joy. You see a product for what it is, not the hype. A lot of vinyl shops just don't care, I mean just look at the vinyl work on most cars. Scary to say the least (sure some are amateur installs). For a lot of shops some glue lines are the least of their concern when there are blatant quality issues surrounding the car.

As long as that is reflected in the price that isn't a bad thing though. Wrapping is expensive and a lot of people are satisfied with a 5 feet car and just wrant to have some flashy color or patern for not to much money on an older car. As long as their wraps look decent and they charge accordingly i think they should be welcomed.

Hey CK Wraps, 3M had some glue line issues a few years ago during the manufacturing process. This was the 180CV3 (could be other medias from them too). I do a lot of commercial applications (printed jobs). Not going to bash 3M but it was there even on flat areas. And I received a roll of their 480mc new print media were the release liner was not embossed properly ruining a full printed wrap for a client (air release channels were blocked). Bubbles that couldn't be popped, the adhesive layer just clobbed up. My supplier made good with a fresh roll & 3M made good on the reimbursement to them. Your techniques look good. As you know, some of the lines will gel over a few days but I feel you on the frustration. Color change wraps have to be a nightmare as we are so reliant on the media being perfect.

Having a second hand to lay the panel on will help a lot. I agree 3m has for sure gotten worse. As soon as it sits on a hard body line like the corner of the fender it can’t be picked up and moved even if it wasn’t squeegeed down. That looks to be how the one glue line got there just sitting on the body line for a short amount of time and then repositioned. I was at a shop where we only used 3m so I got used to working with it and no glue lines. Even then there would be panels being redone for a film issue.

I've encountered similar issues and, like you, I do everything on my own. I very rarely have a second set of hands. I've found that ambient temperature and keeping the vinyl as flat as possible (prevent wrinkling) helps tremendously with these lines. I believe this is what people are referring to when they say you need two people. Metrorestyling sells an item called a "bumper stick" which you anchor the film to and stretch the vinyl uniformly in one direction which helps a lot with preventing this lines. Ultimately, it's a pain in the ass and I am on the verge of refusing to use 3M as well.

I wrapped a friends hood in 3M matte black and we ran into the same issues. Lucky we did the rest of the car in Avery gloss red and it came out perfect. I think it is the adhesive that they use verses the competition. It does not slide well at all, and the second it sees fresh paint it seems to lock down right away and not want to release. YESSS FINALLY! These are the issues i've been commenting about, it is impossible to use this film without getting glue lines everywhere! it is extremely frustrating and to us beginners trying to practice and learn as much as possible it is very discouraging to fail every time without being able to figure out why. We've attended your Vvivid training so we know that we have at least the basics down, but we have yet to successfully complete a full wrap in 4 months... We've contacted the manufactures and were told that if we have to reposition or heat the film then we need to remove the whole piece and heat it all, then relay the vinyl again which is ridiculous. We are out of ideas to fix it to.

Exactly, and the way they explain it is like you are supposed to glass the whole panel in one go without using any tension or heat. That is impossible to do on every panel for every car. There has to be some technique or step we are lacking.

I did my first hood wrap VVIVID true CF yesterday and noticed some horizontal lines running across... glue lines I learned now from end of this video. I had to pull up a number of times to heat wrinkles out so I'm guessing the creases on pull up caused that. Also I had a few weird virticle black lines that arent straight..looks like running water spots, running down the carbon fiber that I'll hide with a stripe. I found out from another video i wasn't supposed to spray tac2 underneath before laying down, as bottle said to do. So maybe the porous lines was from that. I wanted to get the 3m 2080 vampire red but maybe not now

Have the same problem but only with 3m, i think when the glue gets a bit too hot those lines will appear more often! another problem is sometimes the air cant get out although its a comply foil (bubblefree) when using the 3m 480 series

I realize that this video was produced a year ago but I found the same thing with glue lines occurring on gloss white aluminum 1080. Now my disclaimer is I'm just Joe smoe that is one who tends to be self taught and stubborn enough to figure out why something doesn't work to improve upon it. I have torn off a fair amount of wrap after not liking the results in the short 10 or so months since getting into it. I have a 64 Bel Air that I am in stages of wrapping the body to protect it mainly from weather as I do bodywork. The chrome trim being worn and extremely expensive, I decided to wrap in the white aluminum which is basically a gloss metallic silver that looks great. I figured out early on that when I peel the liner off, apply just enough tension to hold on to it and do a quick heat with the heat gun to relax the wrap before I even apply it. Doing this has eliminated the glue lines, any creases I happened to have added to it by chance and even the light damage from being shipped. After learning this trick by luck, I have done it every time. One key thing is to make sure to let it partially cool without moving right after a quick heat otherwise wrinkles will be added right back into what you were trying to eliminate. I wrapped an engine cover in the same 1080 starting from the top and used the heat gun to relax the wrap as I traveled around all 4 sides. The first time around I did make a mistake but continued on to complete the wrap to see if any other issues would show up before ripping it off to start over. If 3M says no heat or stretching, they must be talking about something completely different than vinyl wrap as nobody using it is going to have something totally flat unless it happens to be a sign. I have learned a bunch from many of your videos on this channel and thank you for taking the time to produce them to help the rest of us with far less knowledge.

Tape a piece of material to your table backing side up , pull the backing off and inspect the adhesive. I will bet money you will see a ton of imperfections. I have been doing signs and graphics for a long time and i can say with confidence, it is not your technique. It is 100% the material. I have watched alot of your videos, you're an awesome installer and i think its great that you make these videos to share knowledge that took me years of trial and error to acquire. Keep up the good work man

I'm a solo installer also, and I try to avoid 3m as much as possible. Their colors are some of the best, but the glue lines, tearing issues, and the "hazy lines" throughout the roll, make it very frustrating to work with. That being said, I have had near flawless results with 3m, but I prefer Avery and even Hexis. Also, I try not to pull the door handle cable with my glove hand, because they usually have a little bit of grease on them.

I dont use 3M 1080 films at my shop but I do get the lines on the 3M ControlTac 180c. My remedy is to seperate the release liner out in one shot with a steady motion. Line will appear where the liner stops. You can also try to heat the stopped area before resume pulling the liner. Fortunately for 3M 180c, the lines usually disappear after 24hrs, but I'm not sure about the 1080 though. Good luck!

I have the same experience with 3M 1080. Also, 3M shows swirl marks once the buffer pad makes contact with heated film. 3M is decent for a quick job, but doesn't have a showroom finish. Vvivid is my choice now.

Great stuff, just subscribed. Don't know anything about what your doing wrong lol but seeing the challenger in your thumb nail i figured I'd ask. Have you ever done or seen a challenger with only the top half wrapped? I've seen hood, roof, trunk but what about with full top half? I have a yellow challenger and think it would look awesome with satin black upper half but can't find any wrap jobs like that to check it out beforehand. Thank you

In my experience with using 3M, I've never had to rely on another person to glass out panels. But what I've found is that after glassing and tacking the horizontal or vertical center is relieve the tension glassing places on film and working out from center. As far as finishing edges or tucking, I'm always looking for a way to run the material in with slack over tension and I've never had glue lines or "snail trails" after learning this trick.

Awesome Job!! Question for you, I know nothing about this stuff, I noticed that you had the front bumper off. Is it best to remove bumpers or whatever you can and wrap the car and wrap the bumpers etc.. by themselves?
@ryansteinberg6330
@ryansteinberg6330 4 жыл бұрын
Well I am not “him” but generally the more pieces you can remove the better but usually bumpers and large pieces are usually reinstalled just to make the application process easier...if you remove a grill and fog light.as an example...you prob put the front back on but not completely just enough so you can install the film easier...hope that helps!

It's a shame because they make such unique colors but it's not worth the headache in the end. I was installing 3m Gloss White Gold Sparkle (name?) on a Toyota C-HR and glue lines were everywhere. Even on the flattest, simplest areas to wrap with no tension whatsoever.

CK, just had the same issue with Avery satin black. 3 rolls of film and 2 weeks to wrap one car, only way we managed to get a decent but not perfect finish was from using a tac reducer and wrapping glove. Everything had to be heated and one fluent motion when applying, if the film rubbed on the surface on the car we would have hundreds of aggressive glue bubbles and so many glue lines. Speed never helped. On some panels we had to use 4 installers 👎🏼

3M has clearly started to use cheeper ingredients in their wrap adhesive, ive been doing signs and wraps for 10 years, & i can’t recall a single time that I outright disagreed with you (CKwraps) & your direction, you do me a huge service by teaching my new guys the kind of things to look for & pay attention to when getting use to working on customers cars. You have ALWAYS given 3M respect and have always been fair when reviewing their wraps, - now they are fine with leaving you out to dry when you ask for some kind of explanation for their garbage glue recipe change. Their starting to use more & more Chineese mass - produced industrial chemicals. And they should be Embarrassed to tell you “don’t stretch/pull or HEAT the vinyl” when installing it.. that’s what’s causing the flu lines.. wow😂 🤯🤬. Yea!!👍 o’tay!

3M is very picky at what temperature its being worked it. for minimum glue line try to maintain temp between 18C-20C and also u know this better, lay in as soon as possible, they usually occur when its warmer and the material is lifted to be layed in

Was this the 3M--M227 vinyl? If so it says that it has a 3' stretch in 10 inches. I do recall it said do not use a torch to heat the material. But yes it was a pain in the ace to work with.

A lot of those lines will fade to almost not visible at all within a few washes and time outside getting hot and cold. I am 3m proffered and I know what kind of gluelines are acceptable now. Sad to admit but it seems Avery has taken a turn for the worse quality wise. Was my favorite film to use out here in the mid-west but over the last year or so I just started having a ridiculous amount of lifting issues even on the flattest of surfaces. Hexis and 3m are my go to as well. Never messed with the vivid
