You should give proper attribution to that bit of One-Pocket knowledge you dropped at around the 12-minute mark. That "rule" was given by Grady Mathews and is just known as "Grady's rule".

I play Masters...left the pool scene in 2003 due to some health and personnal probs and didnt have a cue in my hand until last season. A buddy had his 3rd player leave the team and they were gonna have to forfeit so he calls me and I broke out the Schon...I played as an SL5 in my last session in 2003 so I was thrown to the wolves as all the Masters players around here are 7's and 8's and 600+ fargo in the BCA. I lost ALOT of matches 7 to 6 but I gave em hell for being so outta stroke. The good thing is my life is calm and comfortable now and I had forgotten how much I love the game, so I put the masking tape line on my kitchen table with a bottle at the end and polished up my stroke every day for the last 8 months, and it's not only knocked off the rust, but I'm playing VERY well after having my eye prescription adjusted. There's gonna be alotta payback being dished out next season...love the vids bro. "Money won is twice as sweet as money earned" -Fast Eddie Felson

For your safety at 56:34 or so. Moving one ball is always going to be easier than two if you're struggling with safeties. In this one I'd look at playing the 2 into the 3 which should hold the 2 there and you can then run the cue ball 2 rails back and forth behind the 6-7-8.
@drewvonporte

Ah! That makes way more sense 😶 Identifying the advantage of the object ball being close to another ball is not hitting me every time 😮‍💨 This is a great suggestion! Thanks!!

@@drewvonporte The other thing to consider is that you don't have to shoot the perfect snooker/"devastating" safety like you see the pros do. Something like middle of the end rail for both balls is just fine, even if they can see the ball. I can't count how many times I've gone for the perfect safety just for it to leak out and sell out the shot/game.
@drewvonporte

This is true! And something I am very familiar with in endgame 8-ball scenarios, but I think I just feel a little uncomfortable making decisions in 9-ball. Lots of room for improvement!

I used to play masters. I always take the break (when I win the lag). The format is better than the regular league, but the fact that slops are allowed and you have to take what you make takes away some of the "masters" aspect of it. Maybe if they made something closer to what BCA does, it would be more fun. Perhaps they could have us play 9 racks (3 of 8 ball - no slops - still open after a successful break, 3 of 9 ball, and 3 of 10 ball).... but I doubt APA would ever change the format.
@drewvonporte
@drewvonporte 2 ай бұрын
That would be a fun format. I agree, I hate the closed break 🙄… I watch a lot of Ultimate Pool, and slop counts there for Chris Melling, so it makes me feel less dirty these days playing slop in 8-ball but 🤷🏻‍♂️ I know it’s kinda jank… This format is my favorite League play that I’ve come across, but your idea would be perfect 🤌🏼🤌🏼 Thanks for chiming in!! 🤙🏼👊🏼

I had the same feeling, after being rated an A- in Japan, I had a really dumbfounded look on my face when he was able to use another ball to pocket the 8-ball. Banking the eight into another ball and winning is a no no. At least it was when I played. Might be APA rules as well?
@drewvonporte
@drewvonporte 21 күн бұрын
@@LordDeViR Legal contact with the 8-ball, then pocketing it into the pocket you’ve declared, is a win. Doesn’t matter what happens in between. I don’t see any other way! If it’s not allowed to touch another ball on it’s way in….. jeez playing safe to lock the 8-ball up would be so much easier and change the endgame a lot!!

@12:15 Congrats, DVP!!! @27:00 Maybe you were too close to the rail to stop shot the 1? Would have made things a lot easier. But can't argue with the flop 7🤣🤣🤣 @27:55 Your shape on the 5 was not great to get to the 6. I wonder if playing the 3 to get to the 2, then shooting the 2 to get between the 6/8 would have been a better play? You probably would have had a shot on the 5 if shape did not work out on the 6.... But I see you made the 6, so your decision was right. very good out!!! @43:15 I always try to cut the 9 to the overcut half of the pocket on these types of combos @44:00 I would definitely slice the right side of the 3 and send the cue 3/4 rails behind the 2/9. Don't forget about this safe in Vegas. All the pros play this safe. @45:30 Let that stroke out, DVP!!! The 7-9 carom was better than the combo anyways. @1:01:05 slice the right side of the 2 and send the cue down towards traffic @1:07:45 the cue hitting the left side of the 2 will put left english on the 2, so you have to play to the overcut side of the pocket. @1:10:00 double hit @1:15:25 This is a run out table from here. I dunno if this would make a good video but this is something I would be interested in: Have a low skill level player and a high skill level player play against each other but with you shooting all the shots. They would tell you what to shoot and what to do with the cueball. Then you could talk about the decision making in the video. It could also be with two roughly equally skilled players taking the shots if that would make it more interesting. Either way the idea would be to focus on the decision making instead of potting skill. Cheers!

I REALLY like that idea. A “low” skill level player, likely isn’t 100% focused on cue ball position yet, if you ask me. I’d like to do it with a good 4 or a 5-speed. Someone whos ultra focused on decision making and just missing still and making the wrong decisions. I’ll have to look into it!!!

Second ball break... Exactly. I second ball break alot, but there are reasons. My generally rule of thumb is on slower tables, on tables with crappy balls, or against an opponent that isn't giving me the tightest racks I'll second ball break. On tight fast tables with decent balls and an opponent that is racking fairly, head on is the way to go.

The apa doesn't count those close ball hits even basically pushing through the balls a foul as it is a little subjective for amateurs and even the pros sometimes argue about it. in reality if you are really close you need to hit at an angle to the shot to avoid the double hit with the cue. Dr cue has a few videos on what really happens in those situations and uses a high speed camera to show the action.

Let the cue ball go to the end rail and leave the 6 bank softly to the center of the table. Did you consider a safe in this situation? Around 11:57 mark, you were thinking about what to do there.
@drewvonporte
@drewvonporte 2 ай бұрын
Thats a better option than what I ended up doing 😅 On the left short rail though, once ida moved the 6, good chance i coulda left him SOMETHIN though…. But yeah, still a better play than a low % cross bank 😔

I like the way you play and I enjoy your videos. You're a good player looking to get better. that being said, and please don't take this the wrong way as my opinion doesn't really matter much, from what i can see is that APA pool is hampering your game. It's keeping you from reaching that next level. If you are a beginner looking at becoming a decent player, then the APA is great, but if you are a good to very good player it can turn you into an ok player or worse. At your knowledge and skill, you should be running packs off your break. If you haven't yet, consider playing pool for money or money tournaments against stronger players. That's where many of the really strong players play. In APA pool, players tend to stay in their comfort zone and either do not see or don't try shots above or even at their true skill level. Again, this is just an observation and an opinion, nothing more.

You’re definitely right, I think. At least in my division, there’s not a large pool of strong 7-speeds either, which could keep me on my toes more. Not that I win every time! But still… the league I came from had 4-5 fargo 600’s in it. I came back to APA and league play and pool to hangout with a couple good friends who wanted to learn how to play pool and join a league. That has been my greatest interest in league play/pool this past 2 years. However… I am playing better pool (some days, off film of course 😂) than I ever have in my life, and currently thinking about what would push me in the next level. I appreciate this feedback!! And you’re opinion of me only pushes me harder to join a different league 👀

Ive never talked to a Pro 😅 but I was always taught that too. More predictable without the Rail factor. I think though in 9-ball, theres something to be said about banking, especially the 8 or 9 (endgame). If you miss the cut, youre gonna leave it for them. Often if you miss the bank, you have a higher chance in leaving it safe! Whatta you think???

Really good match too, he stepped it up pretty good on the 9 ball segment! I need get in some 9 ball sometime, I'm sure my skills are starting to lag there. I'm in a small area and most of my fellow players are the gambling type; 9 ball isn't a game they care much to play. The way your opponent was winning those games has a lot to do with that. @@drewvonporte that makes sense. When you feel like you are on sometimes it is the best move to try for shots that are less percentage. From the comfort of the armchair, one forgets the other things going on when one is actually at the table. For example a shot like that where you could maybe also think about making it a safety if it doesn’t go. Which almost happened. Most often even when playing I only notice those after the shot, and think to myself “if I had considered it I could have made a foolproof attempt” Really like your commenting on the matches. It helps players like me realize that yes, it’s different in the heat of a game, ebbs end flow, lucky and getting unlucky, focus comes and goes but you just do your best, make the best decision at the time, and learning from it. “Masters” is just a division of APA, MEANT to be for higher level players and a more competitive arena. There is no handicapping at all, but “any” skill level players can join (though our league was limited to SL-5+). A race to 7 (long race) and a mix of 8-ball and 9-ball. Personally, across all leagues i’ve played in (APA 8, APA 9, BCA, TAP), I like this format the most. Though it is where you will find the strongest of APA players, and super teams, our league is not very big and does not have a large high-level player field.
