There’s no evidence to suggest the dog is actually thinking in the way we understand thought, especially when it’s standing in front of the buttons. What’s more likely happening is that the dog has learned over time that pressing those buttons gets a reaction from the owner, so it’s not ‘thinking’ in the way a human might-it’s more of a learned behavior based on routine. Dogs are incredibly perceptive when it comes to body language and patterns, but that doesn’t mean they’re forming complex thoughts or decisions. There’s no scientific proof that dogs using these soundboards are consciously thinking or making decisions the way humans do. The studies on this kind of communication are largely funded by the company that makes the buttons, and the evidence supporting real, coherent ‘thought’ from dogs is practically non-existent. So while it’s easy to anthropomorphize dogs and assign human-like behavior to them, we have to be careful not to confuse learned responses with genuine thought.

@@IvanConejo.I think you’re confusing thought and language-based thought. Dogs definitely think. What they don’t do is think like humans. They don’t have an internal monologue. That dog had a want in mind and was thinking hard (in a non-language based way) about how to get that want met by their owner. Accessing memories of established learned behaviour is thought. It’s just not language based.

@@Suckeychicken exactly. My roommate's dog isn't the brightest dog out there but she understands our commands and decides to follow them when she wants to. She also sits on the sofa when she's not supposed to, but as soon as I give her a look or say her name, she knows to get off the sofa. Dogs have always understood us, but now we're learning how to have a two-way communication system whereas currently it's just humans talking at dogs. It reminds me of videos I see where babies who can't speak yet know baby sign language or can point to words on a flash card. They understand, we just need to find a way to communicate and then teach it.

We have always communicated with each other. Someone has just added their voice and an aural element to it. My dog scratches me when he wants to go for a walk. I could have him press a button, but I dont want to hear that all the time. This isnt really novel. Humans fall for things when they include language, but any pet owner knows what their dog is feeling or what it wants without this. I dont get the hype. At all. And the academic conversation surrounding this topic disavows any notion of true language comprehension entirely. Im disappointed this is being seen as more than a parlor trick. But it is a good parlor trick.

As a husky owner I honestly feel like dogs are a LOT more intelligent than we give them credit for.. I feel that they can understand humans perfectly.. My husky has already taught herself plenty of English words without my help so that when I ask her things like "Bring me your toy" She will go find it and place it into my hands.. It was nothing I taught her.. She just .. learned.. Which leads me to believe that dogs understand humans perfectly well.. and your videos just prove my point.. :)

They can learn to understand words or phrases and what they mean after repetition of actions that take place after those words are said. That paired with their excellent memory can give the illusion of them understanding - but to them it isn't a language, just different noises that they pair with different actions or people or things to do.

You have seen dogs play, right? They are pretty rough, rolling on the ground, teeth and claws out and such. Does that seem like the sort of thing you want to do? Truly? Seriously, when I am done playing with my dog, I have welts all over my hands and arms, bruises too. And my dog is a medium size dog like Bunny here. If I had a larger dog than this I would have to arm and armor myself. There is no actual harm meant, that is just how they play rough. It is easy to satisfy the tug and throwing the ball. But those activities only accomplish just so much, and dogs needs so much more. Can you imagine being limited to just three activities for your entire life? Yeah.

They are not talking or communicating, the behaviour they are exhibiting is the same as when you teach them to sit. It is a learned behaviour, they have no idea what it means. Even if they press the food button when they want food, they don't know it means food, they just know you will give them food if they press it. @@giacomopierpaoli6365 It's not the same thing at all, it is drastically different. The differences are very complicated and I suggest you look it up yourself, but I can assure you the only similarity is the ability to associate one thing with another (which was a crucial thing for evolving language).

@@ratdoto2148 @ratdoto I always considered the ability to create an abstract connection between one thing (sign, object or sound) and another thing - and to be able to interface yourself with another being using those things) to be a pretty similar thing to "being able to communicate", can you suggest me a reading about this subject?

Yes great job Bunny! I want a part to on how to teach your dog to “talk”. Edit:(1 month later) OMG! Guys thanks so much for 200+ likes, that's the most I've gotten.

Hunger for Words' channel has a heap of videos on how to teach your dog (or other pet) how to talk. The creator is a speech therapist, & that's how she came up with the idea of teaching her dog to talk to begin with! Edit: here's a link to the channel I mentioned above: kzbin.info/door/4n1G-BIHCYu1suNxLRjcyg 🙂

@@its_aayt2- you're welcome, there's heaps of videos of people, inspired by Hunger for Words, teaching their own animals to talk too, in addition to the Hunger for Words channel's videos... BilliSpeaks is one of my favourites - she's a tortie cat who's very talkative. 🙂 If you plan to train your own pet to use buttons too, I'd love to see videos eventually! Are you aiming to do that?
