Where have we come from? Have we lost the sense of what localism and are we now a global community? Cat Jarman helps reveal the truth of our globetrotting ambitions stretching back millennia into the past. As a bioarchaeologist, Cat uses forensic techniques on human remains to untangle the individual stories of past people from broader historical narratives. She is an Honorary Senior Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Bristol and director of the independent research unit Munin Archaeology. Cat has a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Bristol (2018), an MPhil in Archaeology (University of Oslo 2012), and a BA (Hons) in Archaeology (University of Bristol 2004). She directs ongoing excavations at two Viking camps in Derbyshire and co-direct excavations at a Rus (Viking-Age) fortified settlement in Ukraine. Beyond the Vikings, Cat’s specialisms include studying diet and migration on a broader scale and the prehistory of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Currently Cat is working on the book “River Kings” under contract for publication by HarperCollins in 2020. Cat also combines her writing and academic research with freelance consultation work for TV. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Very interesting indeed. I grew up in middle Europe and my family had bad teeth, then migrated to New Zealand and all of my children had perfect teeth, never a whole in them.

Wonderful!! I know that isotope research here in Haarlem, the Netherlands, of late medieval skeletons showed clear signs that several people lived further south (Holland, Belgium or france) before they were 15-16. Fascinating research!!

I agree, and we need more like it. If for no other reason, although their are plenty of other reasons: too many people still refuse to see the fact that we are all immigrants and all related.

At least this way you can just turn your volume up, not like most videos, movies and music these days where the sound quality has been destroyed by the loudness wars. Then even though you can still turn the volume down, you can never fix the ruined quality. If you are interested in a full explanation (I am a recording engineer and could explain, but the information is already out there, so no need to take my word for it), then search for: _Loudness Wars._

UM, HELLO!, You didnt take into consideration Continental plate shift and the variances of the shifts. Some plates pulled FAR from their origin, and many years later shifted BACK and to the side, Then back out again. Knowing this just plain blows holes in most current migration theories.
@cheekychappy1234
@cheekychappy1234 4 жыл бұрын
Wrong timescale completely. Human migration is on the thousands of years scale. Plate tectonics runs on the 10s of millions of years scale. As far as humans are concerned the plates have been in the same place since we emerged. Since we emerged in Africa the plates have only moved around 6 miles which is barely perceptible.
