Why do we have arm signals? Lights such as indicators and brake lights can sometimes stop working. This is where you would need to use arm signals to let others around you know what you're doing.

Arm signals are best used to re-inforce lamp signals. It is very easy to leave a lamp signal on accidently and all other drivers are correct to treat the with extreme caution. It is, however, impossible to leave an arm signal on accidently. Arm signals are best used to re-inforce lamp signals to vulnurable road users such as motorcyclists or cyclists to let them know that you HAVE seen them, and that the signal is meant for them.

Its amazing what you remember from when you passed your test (33 years ago). Today, whilst being towed I recalled what to do! Maybe we can teach BMW drivers that because it would appear the cars don't have indicators...........All the best....

Thanks, I needed some revision just to check I was signalling correctly. I live in a rural area with narrow roads and hand signals can be useful. I was just confirming my memory as I am now getting older and remembering my name is sometimes a challenge (poor joke btw). Thanks. Ad altiora!

Other reasons to use arm signals, at a junction where there are multiple options it can emphasise you are choosing an option that may surprise people, I have one which is a tiny track next to a real road. To signal to pedestrians in front of you that you are slowing down.
