You see, black diamonds are among the most popular color of colored diamonds, and as the popularity for unconventional engagement rings has grown in recent years, the demand for these beautiful gems has gone through the roof, and for good reason!
But, even though black diamonds are so popular, there is a lot of misinformation and misconception that surrounds them. And in this video, I'll run through the different types, which black diamonds you should buy, and in the end I'll share with you which famous black diamond engagement ring was considered to put black diamonds on the map…
Let’s start with the most basic question - are black diamonds real? If you are asking if there are diamonds that are black in color, then the answer is yes, they are real. However, there are man-made black diamonds, natural black diamonds, and treated black diamonds. All are real, but there are big differences between the types, and as a potential buyer you should know that there is also a huge difference in value.
Let’s start with natural black diamonds. These beautiful gems are quite different from other colored diamonds, first and foremost in their appearance. Unlike other diamonds, black diamonds are opaque with a high luster that gives them somewhat of a metallic appearance.
But they are also different in the way they get their color. While regular natural fancy colored diamonds get their color due to impurities that are attached to them during the formation process, black diamonds have an extremely high number of inclusions, clusters of graphite, pyrite or hematite inside them to the point that they appear black.
Treated black diamonds are white diamonds that are usually of extremely low value due to the high amount of inclusions in them. Since they have so many inclusions in them, they are considered useless as white diamonds and only suitable for industrial purposes. However, through treatments like irradiation or heat, they can be painted black and sold as treated black diamonds and are far cheaper than the natural ones.
Lastly, there are lab-grown, synthetic, and, simulant black diamonds, which are not diamonds in the normal sense of the word. These are variations of man-made diamonds. And though there is a difference in qualities and therefore in pricing, they are all usually referred to as faux and are the cheapest form of black diamonds.
So to answer the question of which of the three you should choose - there is no right or wrong.
But the important thing is to get what you pay for. If you are aiming for the higher-end of black diamonds, then you should know that current prices of natural black diamonds are about $2,000-$3,000 per carat while at the bottom of the list, man-made black diamonds can cost as low as $100 per carat.

If it is lab grown or mined you can't tell a difference because they test as real diamonds because they are. But if it's dark pitch black it could be a black diamond but irradiated, which make them worth next to nothing.

@@junipheroctot9795 why don't you go to a local jeweler and ask how much to cut and polish. Or he may look at it and tell you, it's costs more to polish and cut than it's worth. Because, I'm sure you know, not all diamonds are worth a lot of money, actually very few are worth a lot of money. .
