Are There Real Purple Diamonds?
To start, are purple diamonds real? Natural diamonds can be purple. While they are nearly impossible to find and as a result, most people don’t know they exist, they are in fact real.
Are Purple Diamonds Rare?
Purple diamonds belong to the family of fancy colored diamonds. Diamonds come in a variety of colors such as blue, pink, yellow, green, and orange. These are just a few of the diamond colors that exist. It gets even more complicated because there are also color combinations, a mix of these colors which result in colors like yellowish-green or even pinkish purple.
All that being said, colored diamonds are extremely rare. Roughly about 1 carat of diamonds out of 10,000 carats is a fancy colored diamond. And purple diamonds are among the rarest of them all.
How Much Do Purple Diamonds Cost?
The color intensity levels for purple diamonds can range from light, fancy light, all the way to fancy vivid and fancy deep. The majority are on the lighter end of the spectrum, making those that exhibit a stronger hue more rare, more sought after, and therefore much more expensive. In today’s market, prices of light-colored purple diamonds are about $10,000 to $25,000 per carat for diamonds smaller than half a carat.
If you go up in the intensity level to fancy, or intense, you swiftly go into the $25,000 to $50,000 per carat range, and even more. And as with all diamonds, the bigger the diamond the higher the cost per carat.
Why Are Purple Diamonds So Expensive?
Since purple diamonds are among the rarest diamonds within the niche of colored diamonds, surpassing even pink diamonds and inferior almost only to reds, it makes sense that they command such staggering prices. With increasing demand and diminishing supply, prices of purple diamonds keep soaring higher.
There are purple diamonds that are not so expensive, but they aren’t exactly real purple diamonds. Companies had created enhanced purple diamonds through various techniques such as irradiation or literally growing them in labs. These methods involve artificially tinting the diamond within its structure.
Where Do Purple Diamonds Come From?
Most purple diamonds are found in the Argyle Mine in Australia - a mine that is set to close at the end of 2020 which will diminish the supply even further. There have also been small yet meaningful discoveries in other locations such as Siberia and even Canada that bring hope that there is still a future to these beautiful diamonds.
As for how they get their purple color, while these diamonds are being pushed by magma from the earth's mantle to the surface, a plastic deformation forms in their crystal structure.
Purple Diamond Names
Because of all of the color variations and combinations, it is very common to give fancy color diamonds descriptive names, like canary diamonds for instance when speaking of specific yellow diamonds. With purple diamonds, some of the most common names include lilac diamonds, lavender diamonds, violet, and mauve.
Is There a Difference Between Purple and Violet Diamonds?
If while browsing you happen to come across a violet diamond, it’s important to know that they do differ from a gemological perspective. Violet diamonds owe their hue to trace amounts of the element hydrogen. In fact, violets are even rarer than purples.
What is the Meaning Behind Purple Diamond Rings?
It is customary for every color to have meanings behind it, and some of the most common when it comes to purple include royalty, mystery, compassion, fantasy, and wisdom. If you add that to the symbolism behind diamonds themselves, which includes eternity and strength, you get a winning gift.
Are There Famous Examples of Purple Diamonds?
The most famous is the Royal Purple Heart Diamond which is the largest fancy vivid purple diamond known to exist. The source reported that this 7.34-carat diamond is believed to be from Russia. The Julius Klein Diamond Corporate cut it into a perfect heart, a shape that enhances the stone's brilliance. No one knows who currently owns the Royal Purple Heart.
The other purple diamond that made headlines is the one that the late Kobe Bryant gave his wife Vanessa. Not much is known about this special diamond but that it was roughly 8 carats and had an estimated value of $4,000,000 back in 2003…

Is there a way to know the difference between fake and real ones without any tools?

Without tools and using naked eye will be not accurate, Real diamonds has lot of inclusions especially colored diamonds. Always consider the 111crystal plane looking at its adamantine luster, consider hardness, crystal structure, clevage Specific gravity test, streak test, and most important to know the geo location since diamonds are only available in kimberlite deposits and some are just tiny. So if you found stones elsewhere, thats could be other minerals or probably a quartz which is abundant on earth surface. Best is go to gemologist to have appropriate papers for your diamond.

Me too.I am from Kuala Lumpur.. I dont know where to sell it.. Mine is 3.5 carats.. pinkish purple in color and the inclusions were very2 small .. its crystalline types of inclusions and it was beneath the surface of the gems.. the color exactly like Orchid Diamond but its more bright and shining itself.. Thanks for the video, actually I almost sell mine to my friend 4 years ago. he offerred for MYR80K but I rejected because this diamond cost 6 digits and above.. when I saw your video, I am grateful and I knew this type of color is unique and rare.. thanks
