Hold up, when I was a kid I used to eat these during July and August, I am from Balkans but someone brought a sapling here in Bosnia in between 1910's and 1930's and since this tree was native to a place that was mountainous it thrived here (Bosnia has a landscape similar to that of West Virginia) and grew up to 50 meters (164 feet), it was massive, towering over my property and the dense canopy would block out the sun completely, it would even prevent rain from wetting the ground, that way only the side that was uphill would be moist and the side downhill would be completely dry. The root system was threatening the foundations of the house (the roots had spread to an insane degree around the tree) and so it had to be cut down. So, yeah. I ate them both ripe and unripe (unripe ones taste better tbh) and nothing ever happened to me.

We eat them :) the trees don't get nearly that large here! I'm thinking maybe because of our extreme conditions. I found your comment very interesting, thank you for sharing!

@@seasonallyproductive Thanks! Though another reason why it might have grown that large was because it was an invasive species, the tree had no natural enemies and most bacteria and viruses couldn't infect it.
