What are Grain Boundaries, CSL, DSC ? | English

In this video, I explain how wonderfully complex the description of a grain boundary can get. This is a slightly longer video, as I wanted to explain this clearly what are macroscopic and microscopic degrees of freedom that a grain boundary can have and what coincidence site lattice (CSL) and displacement shift complete (DSC) lattice mean.

Would this be fair to say is a mathematical approach to describing material behaviour? But in reality it is more entropy?

I would say this is a geometrical description of GB structure. In pure materials, GBs ability to transfer plastic deformation or abitlity to initiate slip would determine the behaviour. And for more realistic material behaviour, entropy is only one side of the coin. Mostly it is the segregation energies/enthalpies, that define the material properties. And also special GBs like these CSL, rarely capture the true polycrystalline material behaviour.
