I get it. But I don't understand the bonding of eg. Sodium Hydroxide, because the oxygen and the hydrogen have bonded to form a hydroxide ion (OH)2 but if this ion is then full, how does it bond with sodium?
@jeremywarner417
@jeremywarner417 7 жыл бұрын
The Hydroxide Ion is not stable, the oxygen needs 2 more valence electrons that it originally has. The Hydrogen provides only one, the Sodium (in your example) provides the other electron to create the stability of the oxygen's full octet. Sodium loses its single valence electron and is now stable with its full 2nd energy level, and the hydrogen is also stable with the configuration between it and the oxygen.

is a ionic bond between a metal and a non metal?
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 7 жыл бұрын
Yes! Metal atoms have fewer electrons in their outer shells (a less complete outer shell), and so can more easily lose these electrons. Non-metal atoms have more electrons in their outer shells - their outer shell is closer to being a complete shell. In ionic bonding, the metals lose electrons to become positively charged, and the non-metals accept electrons to become negatively charged.
@hexisplus9104

@Starkuss
@Starkuss 8 жыл бұрын
How do you know how many electrons to transfer between ions?
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 8 жыл бұрын
+Starkuss It depends how many electrons are in the outer shell - if there are 6 electrons in the outer shell, then that atom will accept 2 more to make the shell full. Whereas if the atom only has 1 electron in its outer shell, it will lose that 1 electron.
@ui2760
@ui2760 2 жыл бұрын
Group 1-3 metals lose the same number of electrons as their group number. Non metals (group 5-7) gain 8 minus their group number of electrons. Group 4 do not gain or lose electrons so they don't form ions. Group 0 already have full outer shells so they don't transfer electrons.

CaCl confuses me. Why does Ca loses 2 electron when Cl need one electron for its valence shell to complete?
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 8 жыл бұрын

Why when you loose a ion does it become positive and when you gain you become negative?
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 8 жыл бұрын
+Nicole Blanco when atoms lose or gain electrons, they become either negatively or positively charged. A positive or negatively charged atom is called an ion. Positive ion when the atom LOSES an electron. Negative ion when the atom GAINS an electron. Hope this helps.
@akris250c
@akris250c 8 жыл бұрын
+The Fuse School - Global Education I think what he was trying to say was "why when an atom losses an electron must it become a positive ion and not an negative" and same with "when an atom gains an electron must it become a negative ion and not a positive" .... is it because of the attraction??
@elleh5255
@elleh5255 8 жыл бұрын
+Nicole Blanco what happens is that when the metal loses an electron, it ends up having more protons than electrons, so overall it will be more positive and carry a positive charge. When the non-metal gains an electron, it ends up having more electrons than protons, so it will be more negative overall and therefore carry a negative charge. Hope this clarifies it for you.
