The fact that you get a few hundred pages for about 5 bucks at most for manga magazines in Japan tells you a lot about the American comic industry where single issues are about 4 bucks with only 32 or so pages
@ChristyLou Жыл бұрын
This is true, but also, manga magazines are very low quality. There are only a few color pages (and normally it’s just a cover page) and it’s printed on thin newspaper. If they were the same quality (full color, good paper) they probably wouldn’t be so cheap

Comics just don’t sell in the west like the used to. Back in the day there were all sorts of collection magazines like these in the US, and 2000AD in the UK comes to mind as the last bastion. But these are able to be printed on thin paper and pumped with ads and sold to many many many more people than the average comic in the US (mangaka also tend to be overworked and under compensated compared to US comic creators)

loved this video!!! I love manga magazines and it's great to see ppl talking about them :) my favs are ciao, nakayoshi and hana to yume but tbh if I lived in japan (and had the means to) I'd just get them all haha a girl can dream right

Nakayoshi is so cute!! They give out so much feee stuff too! Part of me wants to subscribe to it so I can get all the exclusive Cardcaptor Sakura stuff they give out!

@@ChristyLou I bought the May issue of Nakayoshi this year because they were giving out a Cardcaptor Sakura tote bag with the magazine and it's so beautiful!!! Now I use it to carry my manga around haha no regrets

also, just my own personal add on - I used to mainly order my Japanese manga & magazines from CDjapan as they were the most fair price wise and would occasionally order from Amazon JP, but recently shipping costs have gone up and just about every website can get really pricey just for ordering a few volumes of Japanese manga.. so I do also recommend Kinokuniya for US purchases for manga! I haven’t tried any of the magazines as I don’t really see much Margaret or Dessert - for those I have had the best luck buying on eBay from sellers directly out of Japan, and many of the sellers have been willing to help me find certain issues as well! 🙂 Lastly, thank you for this video! This is something I would’ve really loved and appreciated when I was first getting into collecting, so I always appreciate people being clear, concise, and knowledgeable for new people getting into the hobby! 💗

Shipping prices for DHL are apparently going down soon so hopefully shipping from Japan cools down a bit. I'll only buy manga magazines from Kinokuniya in the US, but only when I can get to NYC (its the closest to me). I'll get them from cdjapan if I'm ordering other things.

@@ChristyLou I think it got flagged because I included a product link! which is silly.. but it was mostly just a recommendation for using plastic sleeves to protect manga magazines! I bought mine off amazon, and didn’t even think about it until I tried it. initially I bought them for some of my 10” art books, and then realized they could be used for my magazines. it just makes me feel a bit more secure that they could be longer lasting!

I've heard about a few publishers who publish digitally, is this like a niche practise for jpn publishers or is this just an alternative?
@ChristyLou9 ай бұрын
Digital is becoming more popular! Most print manga magazines have some sort of digital option and there are some magazines that are exclusively digital too. I’m not sure what the chapter availability is like vs the print magazine (like if the digital comes out at the same time). But I know it’s an option

I'd love to collect manga magazines, but because they're bulky shipping is so expensive! I'll probably only get the issues where a series I like is on the cover or furoku 😔
@ChristyLou9 ай бұрын
Yeah it really is. If I had a Kinokuniya near me I’d get more and more often, but I’m stuck having to do the subscription (which I’ve stopped). I’ll just randomly get certain issues if my friends can pick them up for me or I can order them with something else

@@ChristyLou hello! I gave in and bought a bunch of used Margaret issues from 2023-2024 because Yojouhan no Ibarahime has me on a chokehold😭 Luckily I was able to find a box sharing service in my country and the shipping is about 1k yen per kilo for air, while it's about 300 yen per magazine for sea cargo. Maybe there is something similar where you live? Anyways, this is still a dent in my wallet but girl math is telling me I got a deal✨

Is there an app or website i can subscribe to read manga magazines on
@ChristyLou3 ай бұрын
If you want it in English both Viz and Kodansha have their own apps that have simulpubs for things they have licensed. As for the original Japanese, I'm not sure of the specific one, but publishers do offer digital chapters on the day of release (if you want any of the features in the mangazine that are not manga I think those are exclusive to the mangazine)

You will pay a high price for the first appearance of Dragon ball z or Bulma... $ 2 ,000 to $ 4 ,000 from 1983 to 1986.

Personally, I'd rather only collect the series that I like in tankobon format. Even if it means I'm a few chapters behind. I can still read the newest chapters online usually. Unless it's of course it's a rare old series that was never collected into tankobon. In that case I'd probably get the magazine.

Did you learn how to read Japanese? If you did, how did you do it??

I can read a little bit. I took classes in university and did a semester abroad in Japan. I didn't study as much post uni so I'm not as good anymore, but I can understand a little bit!
