As I’m slowly prepping for removal of a large central load wall in our future (will likely require at least a 3 ply 11.25” microlam), I’m trying to ingest as much of this kind of information as I can. The wall is directly above a concrete stem wall, but I’ve been very curious about how the concentrated weight gets re-distributed below the columns at the stem wall/dirt. Do people usually add a large lentil on top of the CMU wall/under the point load? Reinforce with carbon fiber? Dig under the existing footing by hand and add a larger pad? An engineer will certainly be employed, I’m just trying to mentally prepare myself.

trying to figure out what is more conservative. . .4 point loads at even spacing or 1 relatively small uniform load at mid span. epic video for structural engineers!

Great information. You should do a video on brace walls and possible holdown locations.

Do you know if he did one for bracing?

Awesome video- very helpful! You convinced me I need footings under my slab to replace a 6’ sliding door with a 12’ sliding door yet how do I determine the size of the footings needed? The wall in my house where this would happen is just like your house in the video- slider would be on 1st floor- there is a second floor above it and a gabled roof in this area.

I can't provide structural engineering information about your footing sizes.

For timber frame structral load calculations does one need to takeninto account insulation panels , external cladding and roofing shingles?

I'm not an engineer, but from what I know, it's all weight and internal and external pressure. Wind is a determining factor also.

Are all window lintels considered point loads? Or does it depend on how large they are? Or whether they are in a loadbearing wall?
@gregvancom

It will depend on how much weight the header is supporting as to their size.

If your slab doesn't have the extra concrete under the corner loads, should that be added, if so, how?

Shovel, one man, some concrete after a lot of sweating, and the question, "What was I thinking?"

First, grab a 12 pack of your favorite brew. This is how all jobs should stay off 😉 You need to dig, drill into your existing concrete, put in supporting rod/rods (rebar, concrete bolts or anchors) add a base layer of rock, then pour concrete to achieve the desired size. It's a job, but it isn't all that bad. Might cuss a bit so make sure the kiddos are in school.
