I just stared IFS in my own and I just found a therapist who practices it. But I have been practicing in my own for about a month. I get confused as to which part is attached to a particular emotion or thought. Is it important to label these parts as we sit with them. Like shame or fear etc…. Or can we just start to converse with them not sure what part is making me feel this way? I guess it t confuses me cause fear is wrapped up in most of my parts.

To answer your first question: Yes - you can simply connect with parts without knowing all their details. In fact, this is how you will uncover those details and get more clear on which part does what. But if you find you are not getting those details in as clear as a way as you would hope, that's ok! The practice is in self-awareness and self-compassion. How much compassion can you have for you and your parts in the practice itself? You are developing a new skill and new skills take time. To your second point: feeling fear in "most of your parts". This may be true. It also may be true that the "fear" is a part that is present as you are connecting with other parts. See if you can tap into the fear. Let it know you feel it and ask if it has anything else to share with you. If it feels overwhelming, let it know it is feeling a little too intense for you to get the message and would it mind relaxing a bit. Find a space you can hear from the part and ask genuinely curious questions. If you find that this part does not want to converse, simply feel with it and let it know you are feeling with it. Keep us posted!

I have seen my stepmother cuss out my father for having an affair. He always stood mute at the cussing. This standing mute while being verbally assaulted now appear to be a legacy burden How can this be resolved
