I've been doing it since i was in 6th grade, and to be honest my memory naturally got very strong through it + understanding is building on its on, as its like explaining the context while speaking, I usually move my hands as well while doing active recall. The combination is very strong(communication skills + vocabulary benefits). My speed while reading outload has also increased to about 140 wpm, which is quite fine since reading slower means retaining better(better understanding too) anyhow. I follow reading in mind when searching google, or reading descriptions. In sharing locations i usually reduce my voice, and no ones disturbed. Hope this helps someone who's double minded for reading in mind or outload, I've always been an outload reader and am currently pursuing my medical college exams.

I read out loud solely to keep my mind from wandering. It still does but not as much. I also follow along each book with sparknotes.

I recently picked up this habit not long ago; it makes me a little more accountable with the material I'm reading, mainly if I require storing the information. I may come across an unfamiliar word or expression, especially a medical term, where I would halt my reading, grab my phone, and then copy/paste the word with the definition, saving it into notes.

Reading out loud can help with memory retention, it depends on what sort of learner you are. For some people the act of engaging the circuits of the brain for speech is distracting and hinders the internalisation of information. Experiment with sounding out the sentences in your head (subvocalising) and reading out loud to see which helps more. Both subvocalisation and reading out loud have exactly the same benefits when it comes to memory depending on your personal learning style. Reading out loud is unique in its improvement of your fluency of speech.

I wanted to get more comfortable reading outloud. I’ve been on a reading journey and recording myself privately while I read books to document my progress- I notice I understand the material I’m reading better and don’t get lazy and when I get distracted in thought I catch myself faster because I start messing up reading haha

If reading aloud is important to effective study or not
@SteinGauslaaStrindhaug

That's funny because for me it's completely the opposite; reading out loud or even just reading "out loud" in my head (i.e. thinking the sounds as if I was supposed to say them out loud) or "internal voice acting" as I often think of it; slows me down enormously and completely bypasses my reading comprehension. And when I read normally without any internal sound generation; I do misread words, swap them and read the wrong line and skip here and there, but I notice the errors and can re-read and understand what I'm reading; when I read out loud I don't notice what I'm saying and I certainly don't notice if I'm saying the wrong words or skip lines etc. I sound like I'm barely able to read. And if you force me to read something out loud without time to read it silently first; I will not be able to answer almost any questions about what I just read. Even if the text is huge font and triple line spacing so I don't stumble and misread as much; I don't understand much while reading out loud; because I speak so much slower than I'm physically able to speak; and when there's no struggle to visually decipher the text itself it turns into a mechanical boring process where my mind wanders and I start to think about other things while reading. That's the same problem when I listen to people speak; especially if it's something that is not that interesting or they speak slowly; so I often have to increase the playback speed to avoid getting bored. For instance this video is perfect for me at 1.75 speed.

It's okay. We all learn differently so there is no one-size-fits-all solution for studying. What is important is you keep trying new thinga and giving them a chance. Keep what works and move on from what hinders. Happy studying!
