What Are the Dangers of Crossing Leads on a Boat Starter Battery?

Steven learned the hard way and we are so glad that he is sharing his experience with us. He wrote to say, "I had the misfortune of someone crossing leads on my starter battery. I had the starter repaired, the battery terminal fuse replaced but the alternator is not working. I am investigating the exciter for the alternator this weekend and looking for more fuses. What do you look for when this occurs?"
