Depressing. I lifted my throw rug and almost passed out: dark spots all over. I can say this. I used hydrogen peroxide and it seems to be working. But…it’s not home strength. It’s the highest volume you can get at the beauty supply store: 40 volume. Hydrogen peroxide is what pulp mills use to bleach wood pulp. AND…it’s a natural chemical. It eventually turns into just water, releasing oxygen. It will also completely deodorize all smells. It only bleaches organic stains. It will take out blood stains in a second, and red wine. Try it and confirm if it works for you. Remember…it must be 40 volume…or higher.

I mean, you guys are the ones that do this for a living and all but.... if going through the pain and/or expense of getting a patch, wtf would you not replace the corresponding subfloor??!! I've heard stories where homeowner/landlord spent $XXXX to get the cat urine problem remediated, or so they thought, until the first couple of really warms days and SURPRISE! Yeah, you still have part of that problem that needs to be taken care of! 😂😂😂

My ex wife was a victim of domestic abuse. I helped her by letting her stay with me and our kids and her new child. To get her to leave I helped her buy the house across the street. The previous owners had cats and carpet. We had professionals refinish the floor. She wanted white finish. The floor guy put stains on the floor to show her. She picked one. The floor looks great, to me. She’s convinced it’s too yellow. If you can solve this you will be the greatest floor person ever.

Purchased a distressed property with cat urine. Several dark spots, we weren’t trying to save the floor but wanted the smell out and to put LVF over it (I know blasphemy). Saving it would give us increased Rvalue with raised foundation, and save labor. Tried EVERYTHING from enzyme cleaners, peroxide, bleach, pro ozone generator… odor lingered. Every time we thought it improved, next day it’d be back. Few months at it finally I had enough. Went to a corner and took a crowbar to it, lifted a good few planks, I about passed out from the smell. If I knew how soaked and deep this mess was I’d have not wasted months trying to save it. Sometimes the floor is F’d, sooner u come to terms faster the progress. The moister barrier was intact and subfloor in great shape. Removing rest of the floor this week.

Thanks for the advice. This might be challenging for me, since I’m in a rental apartment. If you have any rent-friendly solutions, I’d love to try those out.

Great video. We have just removed vinyl from our bathroom and there is a large patch of dark staining around where the toilet was. I have not smelled anything but the urine explanation seems to be spot on. I think we will be going with the stain option.

This fellow is an excellent example of how explanations should be. I'm retired and have lots of time. I'm doing a large patch in my 1952 oak floor. Once I got all my ducks in a row, it averaged me about 15 minutes to take out each board that needed replaced. I cut about 3/4" wide by length of the board with a small circular saw. I took out the section, favoring to the the groove side; about 3/8" away from the joint. Then I pounded a sharp chisel or 7 pry bar close to the tongue, splitting it away from the tongue joint. The longer the piece, the more you mess with it because of the nails. The nails which remained (almost all) I forced away from the other board, then used a 16oz. finish hammer (opposed to framing hammer with straight claw) to take out the nails. Replacing the boards should be carefully cut . Long boards I cut a tad bit longer and bowed them in the middle to force them tight. Small boards I cut at a slight angle, so the bottom edge of board doesn't interfere with the tops mating. I didn't measure replacement boards, but marked with knife on the board. I used construction adhesive for the bed of board; this helps glue, but also bridge irregularities on the subfloor; then I used titebond carpentry glue for the sides.

We purchased a 20 year old house. We have a lot of stuff going on with our wood floors but its hallway/entrance /kitchen/dining room so no carpet or rugs. Dark stains, spots it looks like just wood (no wax or anything) in front of the door to the back yard and no matter how much i clean and wash the floor my feet still turn black! Its not even stained dark. Idk why it does this because i mop like 3 or 4 times a week and it juat doesn't fix it. Please help.
