Let's refinish these floors! We were lucky enough to find hardwood under all the carpet in our home in the last episode. In this video, we go through the process and all the steps on how to properly refinish your hardwood floors. Just as a heads up there is a LOT of sanding haha! We use some new and powerful tools to accomplish the task and we are super excited to apply the finish to these floors next time!
Thank you for watching and hopefully you found the video helpful!

How dusty it can be for the rest of the house? I’m asking because I’m doing the sanding before moving to my house, but just on the main floor. It’s a townhouse, but I’m wondering if the dust it will be really bad for the upstairs rooms. How bad the cleaning part it will be?

This video brings back memories. My wife and i did our floors in our new house a few years back. It was definitely more work than i expected. After it was all said and done, i wish i had just hired the pros. If your thinking of doing this as a first timer i'd suggest giving some serious thought to it. In the end we didn't save as much as we thought we would and the work was tedious. Sanding imperfections don't show up until you apply the finish and then you have to redo that area. If your not careful you can ruin your floors.

Always sand diagonally because it prevents the sander from creating waves. Sanding with the grain alon without crossing the floor again diagonally is a no go professionally speaking. You won’t see it until you apply the stain. It may look flat but it snot.
@GoldenKeyDesign

That is a great tip, but only if your floors are already cupped. Ours were very flat so diagonal wasn't necessary. We already have applied the stain/top coat and the floor is perfectly flat

It was really a wise move for me to purchase a sander through Home Depot which I did get used for $700. I know this sander it’s a triple head sander retail for about $3000. It was money well spent because it took quite a while to do two houses and I don’t think I could rent it for seven hundred bucks. If you could buy one used that’s the best thing to do.

When you keep a pile of the dust and you mix it with wood glue you can fill all the little holes and the cracks between the individual boards. This way your self made filler will have the exact same color as your base floor. Unfortunately you will have to pass again with a square sander after this. And you have to make sure your floor finish will stick to the wood glue

Hi, as for the edging machine, what sand paper grit number you use first for your hard wood floor edging? what is your 2nd grit number sand paper for edging machine, and the final grit number to go on edging machine? Same questions are for the drum machine: what sand paper grit number to go first on your drum machine, then 2nd, and third? I just hired a edging machine today, and had a go with grit 60 on the. machine, but it didn't off so much as so in your video. Am I support to use a lower number grit: 30 or 40?

The square buff does not do a good job of removing old finish, and it takes a long time to make any progress. The drum sander looks scary, but you can practice with 100 grit sandpaper ( like in the video), and you can get used to sanding without ruining the floor.

You should be going diagonal, not with the grain and you should only sand when moving backwards, don't allow it to sand moving forward. This is why you had to use so much sand paper. You were dragging material across the entirety of the belt. This doesn't happen when moving backwards. Super incorrect video which could make thousands of people finish their floors incorrectly.

I don’t agree with sanding floors that clean as well. But it’s not our home it’s theirs.

If they didn't like the color, then they have to sand it to bare wood.

When we have another 1,000sqft of hardwood to refinish I will let you know. The going rate for 3 grit passes and using Bona finishes is a minimum of $6/sqft and we got quotes close to $8/sqft. So even at $6/sqft we saved $4k. Not sure how you are adding up your numbers

Ha ha your wife did a better job than you with edger, you have to start on the left and go to the right. Anyway, sanding wood floors is not for DIY.
