Dr. Sam Challis is a Senior Researcher at the Rock Art Research Institute at Wits University in Johannesburg. On June 28, he will have a lecture on Prof. David Lewis-Williams’ "The Mind in the Cave: Consciousness and the Origins of Art" (Thames & Hudson Ltd, 2004). The book is a study of Upper Palaeolithic European rock art, and it details the various approaches to rock art analysis and interpretation.
In the light of the 'Wonders of Rock Art | Lascaux Cave and Africa' exhibition, Sam Challis aims to link David Lewis-Williams’ theses to the cave paintings which can be observed at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre until October 1st, 2018.
On this occasion, we asked him to tell us more about the differences between rock art in France and in South Africa.

What is 'Wonders of Rock Art | Lascaux Cave and Africa' ?
Until 1st October 2018, an exact reproduction of over 2 000 figures painted on the walls of the iconic French Lascaux cave is exhibited at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg. For the very first time, French rock art is displayed next to some of the world's oldest instances of human graphic expression, which earned Southern Africa the title of "Cradle of Humankind". Some artworks are dated up to 100.000 years ago...
