Dear Pierre Aycard, your brief answer on Quora to the question of why there was no written language in sub-Saharan Africa is the best discussion on the development of writing systems, their relation to trade routes and the parallels to the spread of agriculture that I have ever read. Thank you for the very humane and meaningful contribution to the dialog.

Right on man. How about some support for people doing this valuable work? I mean providing property trolleys, crushers to compress the material, lanes on he roads, bins to separate waste. It provides a living for people and reduces waste to landfill. Why are they not being supported?

I read his ' highly praised' book 'The Mind in the Cave' and was deeply disappointed by his hypothesis for the origins of Upper Palaeolithic cave art . His hypothesis is that humans did not naturally evolve into image makers ( tell that to any mother who's child gets hold of a crayon) and accidental markings that anatomically modern humans perceived would not have led to the forming of imagery . So for instance , a hand print or footprint in the mud (occurrences that must have happened) would not have left an image in the mind to be copied . The play of shadows around a fire would not have led to image making , the marks that a child would make in mud , or scratch into dirt , would not have led to image making . What did occur though, according to Lewis-Williams hypothesis was that anatomically modern humans would look at the cave walls and see fully materialised images of bisons, aurochs , horses ,and felines , floating on the walls and the people in the caves had only to trace them onto the walls . Extraordinary what an advanced academic education can do for you .
