What are the different types of pencils? Ft. Kylie Cosmetics' NEW Wood Clenched Lip Liners

@Kylie Cosmetics new Lip Liner Precision Pout launch reminded me that we haven’t spoken about different types of pencils at all! Interestingly, pencils IMO is the only category where “innovation” didn’t necessarily create a superior product. The @Kylie Jenner lip liner Pencils are known as wood clenched in beauty product development land. The innovation comes through examples like @Rare Beauty’s propel/repel lip liner. You will definitely feel a creamier texture out of these style pencils as they were able to make more long lasting products, but there is something about a classic wood clench pencil that still hits. I imagine this is why we see brands often launch propel/repel and then go back to classic wood clenched pencils. Which Kylie did. There is also a third category that feels like a bit of hybrid between the two. I showcase an example with @Jason Wu Beauty’s lip liner. This is a bit of a faux wood clenched vibe. I find that the wood clench pencils last longer than the creamier twist up pencils. The creamier pencils I use like a lipstick, all over. The wood pencils I use like a traditional lip liner and for over-lining.

I ordered one twist up yesterday and yeah I didn't need to use a lipstick but I used it coz dry lips and to match a shade. Heaven 💞

I used to hate liners that need sharpening, cause I was just lazy and nobody else would use my makeup anyway. Now, I LOVE a sharp pencil. It can do so much more and you can control the angle to make thinner or thicker lines. Also much more hygienic 👌

I love the wood clench for light lighter to medium shades. Because of the creaminess of the other kids, they’re nice for dark shades to get an even application with your lipstick. Helps it not be patchy.

I prefer regular wood lip liners especially the ones from Mac. All the creamy ones dry out or never sharpen correctly. It’s the same for eyeliners too. But the retractable eyeliners are convenient.

Is it possible to have a video explaining how to sharpen your lip contour? I always tend to break them because i don’t know what is the difference between them and some doesn’t sharpen with a makeup sharpener but with the special sharpener inside the lip contour i never get to get out 😅 btw i love your videos ☺️💗

I prefer the wind up plastic case every time, most of them have a little sharpener in the other end if you really want a sharper point, it only files the little centre, but I never bother, I get a thin enough line that I'm happy with, just with the wind up.

I miss the old Clinique wood eyeliners. Now, supposedly the same formula (i question this) and in plastic. I can't sharpen the eyeliner. I feel I have less control. Gripping plastic is also not as nice.

Wooden one last longer, I feel like it. Not only on the lips but feels like you take longer to run out of it. The other ones you finish them in the blink of an eye. I have wooden pencils that are still alive after 3 years of almost daily use.

I don't know, the last time I bought a retractable liner like that, it came with a sharpener specifically made for creating a more narrow tip. Obviously not a sharpener like you would use to peel away wood but one more specifically tailored to address just the product itself. Granted, if you have something like that, you are essentially whittling down the usable product but nothing that an eyeliner brush can't fix in my opinion.

I never really used lip liner until I got older. The lip line puts you more in control your lips shape and also can prevent feathering (where usually lipsticks bleed into the lines around the lips) depending on the type of of pencil

I have a problem with the wood clench pencils. So many of them don’t sharpen right. They’ll splinter off or one side the the pencil doesn’t cut away. I’ve tried multiple wood clench pencils with multiple sharpeners (I’m talking brand new never used sharp blades). I’ve tested with expensive and inexpensive wood clench pencils and get similar results. I’ve had other people around me use the tools to see if I was the problem. The issue persisted 🤷‍♀️
