It's not entirely clear if the gods of the Dreamlands are totally unable to interact with the physical world. Nodens, for instance, has been mentioned as interacting with the waking world, and it's implied (though not entirely confirmed) that the Great Ones themselves are the mythological gods of the ancient world.

I liked using the idea of people getting stranded in the dreamlands, or even being taken an kept there via some method as dream slaves, as a hook for players going into the dreamlands. The idea of a occultist in the higher end of society calling on a group to investigate his children's strange state of being in a unwakeable trace or sleep, which could take them thru investigating the occultist's tomes an things he had in his home, to also investigating if there is something else at work in the Dreamlands. I am working on a lovecraftian setting and adventure in which the world of the setting is covered in veils that obscure aspects of reality and perception of those looking thru them, but thru several methods people can pierce of pass thru the veils, but will find out that the veils were placed to both hide the old one's from the perception of people an the people from the perception of the old ones.
@CosmicG7777 жыл бұрын
Jordan Ferguson Dude, in that case, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended reading/listening to the (audio)book, Johannes Cabal: The Fear Institute by Jonathan L. Howard. It'll really give u a good understanding of the Dreamlands.

They're one of the few unfortunate people who came to the Dreamlands not through psychically sensitive dreaming but through an active portal created by a Dreamlands creature trying to get home. Now if you die in the dream you die for real...Thanks for all the great comments fellow Mr. H and Lovecraft fans ^^

I do believe that there are actuall physical portals into the dreamlands. Ghouls are able to pass through to our world's grave yards to feast on corpses. Though they rarely do this as the grave sites of the gugs in the dreamland underworld are more fruitful.
@religionisatragedy97425 жыл бұрын
I like to think that the dreamlands are the dreams of another being like Azathoth, maybe the gods from Azathoths dream are just unable to go there. Or unwilling to put up with competition from new gods.

Who's to say we don't live in the Dreamlands ? But then again some who believe in the multiverse, have an idea that our 'Universe ' is the center due to imagination. Not saying I put any stock in it, just find it an interesting theory.
@DrFranklynAnderson4 жыл бұрын
I’ve got a crazy theory that the Dreamlands (or parts of them) used to be a part of the waking world, but somehow transitioned to the dream dimension. I need to reread Lovecraft’s works to see if I can find more evidence.

I used to have reoccurring dreams of finding a secret staircase in my basement. Every level would be identical to my basement, but gradually more dilapidated. Every time I had the dream, I would get deeper in levels. Eventually the levels just looked like caves, but the deeper I continued, I noticed an orange glow that would get brighter as I descendent. The deepest I ever got was I could start to hear noises, like whispering or far off muffled talking, I couldn’t understand what was being said. Where a staircase leading down should have been, there was an door that was slightly open. The orange light and noises were coming from the other side. I would start to gently push the door open to sneak a peak beyond the door.

I don’t know if I’ve been here specifically, but I had an interesting dream one. I was in a room set up like mine, but it was made of a grayish brown wood. On the nightstand next to the bed, I heard what sounded like a small puppy. When I saw it, it looked like it had part of its head removed and had part of a rag doll ‘s head stitched in its place, with a tiny button for an eye.

Here from bloodborne, always been a huge fan of lovecraft, I've read all the popular stories but hadn't heard of the dream cycle collection. The more I read about them, the more I realized Miyazaki has borrowed heavily from them for both bloodborne and elden ring. The giant sprawling castles In beautiful lands, horrible monsters that were once men, the common theme of dying then being reborn to enter the dream again, and of course the great ones. So fkn cool that my two favorite pieces of media and creators are so intertwined.

my idea the whole story was an acid trip This is my actual theory the dreamlands are a reality thought up by human dreams similar to how our many multiverses are the dreams of azathoth. The dreamlands are simply another layer of reality where humans are the azathoth. It is just it can stay intact when you wake up because there are billions of dreaming humans. While there is only one dreaming azathoth.

There is something called Universes and multiverses and even hyperverses you see the "Dreamland"is a 4d dimension in which you can feel touch taste and DIE but it is risky tasks to even dream such a place because you will end up creating a inter-universal being in other words create yourself in that world but because it is 4D dimension it will be like lucid dreaming as it feels my advice "safe next to the guards or go where you see light"
