Personally i was never too keen on the brother relationship given the King in Yellow predating Lovecraft entirely. I'm more interested in Carcosa and the largely unknown play/book dedicated to the Nameless King. In the Robert W Chambers stories, the King in Yellow is depicted less as a destructive and powerful deity like the other great old ones, but sadistic puppet master that shepherds people together to develop powerful connections worthy of inspiring artisitc masterpieces before ripping friends and lovers apart through supernatural means that ruin the survivors very understanding of existance.

See, you get it. All that Hastur crap and Cthulhu half-brother nonsense was a johnny-come-lately attempt on the part of August Derleth (who deserves recognition for keeping the mythos in the popular consciousness, awful writer though he was) to...um...concretize (is that a word?) the very vagueness that made Chambers' book so effective and so awe-inspiring, in a very misguided mission to systematize and categorize all the scattered, chaotic references and whispers of our beloved mythos. In doing so, he effectively neutered them by forcing it all to make sense. His conception was one of powers and principalities, factions and nation-states on a universal scale, each ruled over by squids and tentacle-monsters that somehow are hedged-in by, and govern their territories according to human concepts of morality and power, with their hideous lore and forbidden knowledge reduced to mere competing religious ideologies. It's all a tremendous bore. So let me be frank: the King in Yellow is not a squid named Hastur. He/It is the pinnacle of Truth and Beauty. The King in Yellow is the peak of perfection, is every thought and emotion fully realized in the absolute. He/it makes an Oedipus of us all. We are programmed to strive for the true and the beautiful, foolishly believing these ideals will complete us and fulfill us. But every effort in this direction is just another step down the twisted path to Carcosa. Quod Me Nutrit, Me Destruit, after all. It's when we arrive, when the Pallid Mask falls and the Tattered Mantle is irrevocably opened that we will know the desolation of purity, the dissolution of the soul and the evisceration of the mind. Powerless to change course, we shall see the towers of the great City rising in the distance. Our souls will echo hideously with internal tempest as we gaze upon the unstirred surface of the Lake of Hali, its very calm starkly mocking us. Its fathomless darkness will sound with impotent execrations, damning reality, existence, consciousness, perspective as the storm of existential dread shatters and scatters every belief, every notion, every comforting mantra mooring us to a reality that is no more. The possible and the impossible will be equally meaningless, as we are bathed in the glow of the great moon and enshrouded in the shadow of the looming towers lying beyond it. Bellowing with laughter and wracked with tears, our minds will splinter and crack to their foundations from within. From without they will be assailed with shreiks and moans. Desperate, futile, agonizing pleas to turn back will rise thunderously from the depths of the unstirred lake. But don't they understand? If a play begins, it must end. Our response will be twofold, yet at once: a shrill cackle and a lowing sob to tumble the dunghills of our cognizance to dust. Finally and firstly, the thin patinas of logic and reason will be as ashes in a hurricane. The lie of sanity will crumble as the very precipice of knowledge is crested, the ultimate and the last fact will be revealed: the 'is' without 'is not,' the Yes without No. "Not upon us, oh King" we will cry in the correctness of our regret. Man's mind was doomed to calculate the dimensions of his reality. But this mind, unsuited for truth, could only see a prison or a protective hedge. His imagination and knowledge brought yearning and dissatisfaction. Our tragic nature drives us to seek the fulcrum of His governance, the glory of His throne. Why has He drawn us hither? Simply put, to fulfill. As we approach His seat, the illusion of our individual agency will make the final circuit from everywhere to nowhere and back again: we will beg for lies, for contradictions, for oblivion, expressing this wish with the grunt of an instant and a pained groan of eternity. Only thus, bound beyond all hope for escape and loosed beyond any sense of recovery, will he recieve us, to deny and to give. He will deny us the Play, for the curtain has fallen on Act II and the audience has left its theater of lies in haste. He will give us what we *want,* what we have found, and what was always ours: the fruit of our highest aspiration, the catalyst of our destruction. We have fallen into the hands of the Living God. But only when we absorb the moral of the story (that human beings are really just a pack of overzealous method actors) and grant ourselves mercy will the book be shut and sealed with the Yellow Sign. The sisters will weep and bury their sorrows in a strange new song, for their City is not the one they knew. The Phantom of Truth will be summoned to return the finished volume to its Chambers. Gathering it in hands that are not hands, he ponders the blank manuscript, wondering how it will begin. Only the King knows for sure. I read horror for a good scare after all. Lovecraft and Chambers deliver the best kind, too. They give you a glimpse at what lies on the other side of fear. I'll stick with them and pass on the calamari.

I really wonder if Hastur was an inspiration for the souls series. In Demon Souls you fight the archdemon 'Old Monk' who reincarnates himself by wrapping yellow cloth around a corpse. In Dark Souls 1 is Xanthous King Jeremiah (Xanthou = yellow) who was exiled in another world because his might could rival the gods. Dark Souls 2 has only Xanthous armor set, but you get it by defeating the Darklurker who dwells in the abyss. In Dark Souls 3 you can obtain the set as well, but its worn by Yellowfinger Heysel. The set states that the Xanthou scholars seek the sorceries of the destroyed city Oolaciel, which could be a nod to the ruined Carcossa.

To me Hastur is probably the most interesting lovecraftian god from a literary standpoint. While the nature of Hastur himself is impossible to understand, as Tale Foundry has so expertly discussed in his videos on The King In Yellow, what he represents is something that we are fully capable of comprehending. To make it brief, The King in Yellow represents the power of words and how they can create something much greater than what the person who speaks them intends. He can also represent decadence, as the color yellow was very much associated with decadence when the original book was created. Specifically, however, he can represent the fate that decadence leads a person, becoming the very mask you wear, literally becoming nothing but a shallow parody of yourself. Now I’m just heavily oversimplifying what Tale Foundry says, but it think it is true.

The "nameless yellow sign" of Hastur kinda reminds me of 3 hand sickles used by old'timey wheat farmers, perhaps the sign is like a little nod to the yellow feaster's domestic origins...

In alternate storyline ….when Pennywise tries to kill Georgie It doesn’t realize underneath the unassuming yellow rain slicker the child wore was a tentacled monstrosity that belonged to the Elder Gods … the boy in yellow rain coat was actually the King in Yellow😮

@algeanephila5 жыл бұрын
@JacobofhouseTravillski kind of, many Lovecraft tales don't have direct connection to the pantheon, and the Mythos just became a concise mithology after Lovecraft's death

Have you made anything about Apollo/Python or Helios? I really enjoy learning new things about the Cthulhu mythos, but I hope that you continue making videos about the Greek myths. There are still many things that you haven’t talked about. If you could then it would be really cool if you would make a video about Tyr or Heimdal. Keep up with the great work

Robert Chambers also wrote a short story called The Yellow Sign in the 20s influenced by Bierce's story. The King in Yellow book was a big part of it.

Cool video. Just to add something: the showrunner for True Detective, Nic Pizzolato, was a literature professor before getting into video content. That aspect might explain all of the esoteric references.

It might be helpful to know that the whole family tree business in the Mythos was an addition by August Derleth after Lovecraft's death. Suggesting that these entities were related sort of defeated the intention that these were alien beings and unknowable. Derleth set up a family squabble which is probably one of the most relatable things imaginable. Derleth did collect and save HPL's work which did lead to it being much more in the mainstream, so I cannot dislike him too much.

Interesting stuff -- didn't know Hastur and Cthulhu are related! The rivalry doesn't surprise me much, though -- all these cults seem to hate each other. I am surprised that you brought up the King in Yellow without mentioning the play of the same name. Isn't that another of Hastur's ways to get new cultists -- have it performed and drive everyone who sees it mad?
@starwish62786 жыл бұрын
Hastur and Cthulhu are not related in any way, unless you accept Derleth's work as canon, which many do not.

In Marvel, Knull's title of "King in Black" is a reference to Hastur, the King in Yellow. Furthermore, Knull's spiral emblem is based on the Spiral of Carcosa from True Detective, which is a reference to Carcosa, which is associated to Hastur.

I think giving them relationships such as being brothers as well as emotional motivation humanizes the entities which goes against the intended purpose of these beings. They are supposed to be alien and unknowable, completely unrelatable to the human mind.
@zackketchum39846 жыл бұрын
Sylentmana We have August Derleth to thank for that. Lovecraft kept everything intentionally vague, as humankind would probably not understand the ways in which these beings are connected.
@monkeybusiness6736 жыл бұрын
I like to think of it as "We can't understand what's up with these two guys, but it LOOKS like they're in a rivalry. It SEEMS like Hastur wants to destroy Cthulhu." Because those are concepts that our insignificant minds can make sense of. Who is to say that this "destruction" of Cthulhu actually kills/desintegrates/whatever him? Who's to say that Hastur actually feels something like hatred towards his brother? The intention may be something else entirely. Or there may not even be an intention behind it; maybe they're contesting because that's what they exist for? Also, Shub-Niggurath is THE mother, knwon to give birth to strange beings. But the relationship between her and her offspring might be something mortals cannot possibly fathom. Hell, sometimes we're not even sure if two beings with two different names are even DIFFERENT in the first place. So, I don't think it takes away; instead it opens up new possibilities. And the more you think about all that and try to make sense of it with your limited human brain, the closer you get to insanity.
