As I had this accident when I was skiing and the ambulance came they gave me morfin and all that, I was gone for half a minute, my wife is a nurse she thought I died but haven't got an real answer to that from the hospital, never mind the thing is when I laid there on the ground unconscious I saw this old grey man with very long beard standing over me and just look at me, not saying anything just staring at me and I felt like he meant that I should come back. When I came back I said to everyone near me what I've had seen. It was very strong then but even more strong now when I think of it.... Odin is everything

Being an eclectic pagan, I started my journey off with rootwork and conjure (some people call it hoodoo). This, along with my norse pagan, celtic pagan. Etc knowledge helped me understand that gods are great spirits that existed before we did and did such wonderful things that many people still celebrate them and pray to them, much like the catholic church with saints. Same with ancestors. This is how I understand it all much more clearly.

Man,i enjoy you asking these questions! Whenever I try to think what the gods are I get the feeling they are too big for me to comprehend. It's Like I only see a part of them, the part that I can see or supposed to see. Its like they say: Just use what we give you, that's difficult enough for a mere mortal as me. But thinking about this some more, it sounds like they don't want us to peak behind the curtain. Meaning there is something behind the curtain. Almost got the feeling you were pissing some entity off with asking these questions.... Like you were opening things you weren't supposed to open. Very interesting video :-)

Although I'm brazilian, I feel very connected with nature, magic, and norse culture/religion. In my first weeks of study of magic I dreamt with Odin rescuing me from deep waters, then moments later he fed me with my own eye. Another day I was in my backyard, smoking my pipe, watching the clouds forming for a storm, then I closed my eyes, concentrated, the moment I opened them, a huge lightning striked the floor about 200 meters away. I felt in my gut that these two situations (the dream and the lightning) were callings from Odin

I love this video. I'm going to have to watch it again. I felt the need to pause the video and share: while watching this video I became distracted. My mind wandered away from the monitor and audio, only to be snapped back by a voice I could clearly hear behind me. Odin spoke to me, told me of what he wants from me during this year. It was somewhat vague, but I feel like I will know what to do when it is time. He asked me a question, then gave his advice to my answer. Before he parted he left me with a warning, but it was positive in it's nature. It's just after 3:30am for me, and I was having difficulty sleeping tonight. Now I feel peace in my body and mind.

I love those not-so-subtle, subtle little thing things that happen to us as pagans(and even people of other faiths). Whether it be a thunderstorm leading me to an incredible place where Thor first revealed himself to me, or a beer foaming up in my face as I went to offer it to Thor(thanks, Loki lol) or a haunting and intense presence making me well aware that I need to stop putting off doing something important and just DO IT, the gods definitely give us signs. Even if the gods may just be energies or presences that we have personified with our depictions of them, they are most certainly there.

The other night I was having a really hard time with some personal and relationship things and was just trying to think through things and not really trying to connect with the gods but I guess in my minds eye I saw a raven’s eye and it turned into a man’s eye and I instantly felt better and like I could get through this. I personally believe they are real, physical beings. I've had a few experiences after giving offerings that really stand out, when giving to Odin, I've seen a hooded figure walking between the gaps of trees, when giving to Heimdall I've had a windy day become calm, as if he's focusing on what I'm saying (Which sounds more meta-physical but it's a persons presence that I feel). But the one that stands out the most for me was an offering that I gave to Freya recently. I kept catching glimpses of something out the corner of my eye in my house, that left me with a warm feeling in my chest which I just felt was her calling to me. So I made my way to beautiful spot in a valley to thank her for showing me her love, as I get up to leave, I shout her name one more time, and a falcon passes right over my head and circles back around before flying off. I like to believe that she paid me a visit. I was listening to a podcast of yours with My Norse Pagan Journey who made a point of saying that being in Europe, he felt closer connected to the gods, part of me wonders that being in England and being closer to the ancestral origins, do they find it easier to "manifest" for a lack of a better word.

I remember once walking out of work really late at night at the museum in Cincinnati. I was parked near the train tracks there and everything was quite except for the call of ravens in a tree. The tree was packed with ravens everywhere, it was a chorus of raven calls. It was almost surreal, I have never seen such a gathering of ravens before except that night. The only thing close was being at the grand canyon and seeing them all over the place. That night I felt closer to the Allfather than ever before.

That storm was awesome. I also like your crazy theories about the gods being other worldly entities. I think along those lines too. And maybe it's no coincidence you mention Jupiter having storms on that planet since in Roman/Greek paganism, Jupiter is the god of Thunder and storms... It begs to wonder how much the Romans knew about the planets, and by extension the Germanic peoples and Norse peoples...

My views are a mix of polytheism and pantheism. I believe that there is one entity that is the center of life and energy and this is the entity that most call God for lack of a better term. I think this entity is far too vast and complex to understand so it breaks itself down to several different aspects that are the gods. Being broken down into smaller bits lets us embrace and understand it better. This entity appears to different people in different ways according to what they need and what they resonate with. That explains why there's so many similarities between the gods of different pantheons, but they're still different. The gods are all aspect of the same being, but they're still different from each other

My hypothesis about the Vanir is that they were one of the indo-european tribes, and later became mythesized as gods. I kinda find this interesting, since the Tihua De Danann (hope I wrote that right) tribe in celtic mythology is hypothesized to be the same thing, and both were tied to the elves/fae in their respective mythologies.

An immortal people who were the first "stable" (not chaotic like the jötnar) beings, but still full of the power from creation. They live in small tribes/extended families, taking up residence in domains like Sky or Earth, picking up roles (aspects like Death, Thunder, etc). Their power, their domain, and their aspects make them Gods.

As I reconnect with my ancestry I find myself being drawn to Norse paganism. I’m on the fence but I also have this idea that our ancestors were smarter than historians give them credit for. It makes me think that I might be on the right track but I find that a lot of history is blown up and exaggerated, that could also be true with religion as well. As a person that does do dmt and mushrooms I do see how our ancestors would have found these energies and communed with them and created their faith. Much love guys and gals ❤️

I think of the gods as more of.... spirits almost??? Idk how to explain exactly how I feel. I don’t think they’re literal beings walking the earth, but more can take the features of anything and present to you when needed/worthy/etc. Which is why you can connect to them in different ways and part of why it’s so important to be connected with the natural world.

I have been a very materialistic atheist through my teens and early-mid twenties, but a number of different things (experiences as we go through life, it is very rarely "one thing" that changes us) have changed my perspective somewhat. I always believed in ghosts and reincarnation to some extent - because there is so much that can't be explained any other way. Since I can't be convinced ghosts or spirits of the dead don't exist, that opens the question of other types of spirits. In our very Abrahamic-focused world, the idea of a capital-G "God" is an all-powerful, all-seeing, all-good (we can ask questions about that one, but it is what their mythology says) deity that created everything, is the beginning and end of everything, et cetera et cetera. That is very different from polytheistic faiths, obviously. This might sound silly, but I really got my mind stretched and challenged in new ways by getting into the Elder Scrolls lore (for those who don't know, I guess you know the name Skyrim). They have a really interesting and solid mythology, which is of course inspired and based off of a kaleidoscope of real-world religions/pantheons/mythologies. Maybe the gods like Odin, Thor and Frey were real people who lived long ago (or some of them being composites of several people, as happens deeper into history), who were considered heroes and "turned into gods", symbolically, after death. Or maybe they were real people, born and lived and died, and *literally* turned to gods after death (more about that in a moment). Maybe they are great spirits who may or may not have walked the Earth in human form (that is a bit too much for me), or were given a human look and personality by us, to make them more familiar and easy to understand. (Splitting into several comments for ease of reading)
@Aethuviel
@Aethuviel 3 жыл бұрын
This is also going to sound a little silly, but I am turning 30 and got sudden panic with how fast life is rolling by, so I started thinking more about a possible afterlife (I know, hopefully I have 60+ years left). If the grave is all there is, I don't fear non-existence itself, but I feel an anxious urgency and fear of not having time, of everything ending (I think the common atheist "I was dead for billions of years before I was born without suffering from it, so why would it be any different after death?" is a fallacy), and not seeing my loved ones ever again. Also, I don't really believe in it. I've been a materialistic atheist for years as I said, but I never truly, 100% believed that we just disappear when we die. I think there is something to both ghosts (spirits of the dead) and reincarnation, like I said. Ghosts seem to be unhappy people stuck in "limbo", perhaps not realizing they're dead, trying to complete what they couldn't in life. Maybe some spirits were never people, or maybe all spirits have the potential of becoming living things (by choice or not, we can't know), reincarnating to "have another go". That each life is a test to learn new things - I think eastern belief systems have interesting takes on this (and it's not just eastern, it seems to be pretty global).
@Aethuviel
@Aethuviel 3 жыл бұрын
I keep hearing the same thing from people who died and came back. It is a state of pure bliss, that your whole lifetime seems so insignificant, like it was all a game. That their deceased kin is coming to get them. (But if we are kin even beyond the grave, are we connected kin even as spirits, not just due to birth on Earth? So many questions.) But the idea of reincarnation also scares me. I can't remember any previous lives I may have had, so if it exists, reincarnation still means your personality "dies", that this lifetime is just one of many. I don't really like that idea, but that does not mean it's not real. Because of how many religions there are, I don't necessarily believe in the specific afterlives, like Valhalla, but that they are more symbolic and how that particular culture interpreted the afterlife, like how the gods may be great spirits given human names and personhoods by us. Or maybe they do exist, if the gods exist as great spirits (whether they existed as people before, or not), and have their own realms, like Valhalla. TL;DR: I believe spirits are real, the gods are great spirits who may or may not have been real people who walked the Earth, the various afterlives may or may not exist or may be more symbolic, reincarnation may or may not exist or may be a choice, ghosts are unhappy spirits stuck between planes, life is a test.

You talk about the Vanir and the Æsir being two different things, but Snorri is more or less the only one who distinguishes these as two seperate things. The Poetic Edda uses Vanir as an alliteration instead of Æsir. Saxo also talks about there only being Æsir and Jotnar, not Vanir, and Saxo predates a lot of stories from Snorri.
@nathanmauk9387
@nathanmauk9387 4 жыл бұрын
That's not an unreasonable supposition. I believe Rudolf Simek has made the same case that, prior to Snorri, 'Aesir' and 'Vanir' were synonyms alternated out of poetic necessity, not names of distinct tribes of gods. However, the traditional view is very strongly ingrained in both scholarship and religion. There's also the problem that many of the gods typically classified as Aesir seem to have reflexes in non-Germanic IE pantheons, the Vanir less so.

Traditionally, if Odin were to be identified with any planet, it would by Mercury, via the interpretatio romana. Unfortunately the Old Norse planet names seem to be lost, so we don't know whether they even named planets for gods, as the Romans and later Europeans did. You are not the first person I've seen identify Odin with Jupiter, though. I'm not sure whether this might be some novel gnosis, or just a sense derived from Roman precedent that the largest planet ought to be identified with the "king" of the gods.

Just a thought ...do you think if you were connected to Egyptian gods, greek gods or even Jesus christ and meditated on them that you would feel that connection and even manifestation. Are they all real in a sense. Or are they all aspects or traits of a connecting force

aight so. i got some pieces of the puzzle for you. events phase in and out. the day phases in, then there is a moment whereby its not phased in. then it phases in again. a physicist in a discipline like cosmology may tell us the cause and reason for it. but he sees it from a material perspective. when we see rain phasing in. we don't mean it in the sense of water evaporating, of going in stages. rather we just mean it in the sense of rain returning. we can think of it that way as well. but it's not necessarily important to realize this piece. when a heart beat phases in. we don't look at it from a biological sense of our sinoatrial node surging an electrical signal that causes the muscles to constrict. we just say that our heart beats. similarly. every event returns. a world war, a man eating, a walk to the park and so on. when we say there is no God but God in Abraham ic religions. we are saying that there is only one being in charge of it all. in the sense of one stone hard denominator of what causes events to phase in. be them ourselves or the universe. or even a talk to God. a psychologist sees a dog's mouth drooling. and say that this event phases in whenever an individual with a white robe enters the room. whereby stimulating inherent biological responses from the dog. however it's not necessary to think this way. just notice that the event of the dog doing that repeated. the day will phase in again, the heart beat too, the rain too. there is always a new book phased in with religions. notice what repeats in your life. now for a trick: the first fime a random enough event happens. it comes back in a bigger magnitude.. which was bigger. world war 1 or two. it was world war two. the second phase-in of a random enough event is always done in a bigger magnitude. your car may get dented today but it'll crush tomorrow. also events are not mutually exclusive. if you circulate around a building everyday, 7 rounds a day. for a month. and 3 of these want to phase in at the same time. how would the universe have the capacity to to that. (like making you do three heart beats at once). it cannot. so then, how would it go about it? it will make one of your family/relatives do that with you. that you will turn around the building at once. and perhaps your relatives/family be unaware of it. the buddha said that there were other buddhas before him. Mohammad said that there were other prophets before him. Jesus was on about that as well. there is no event that is, except that it is to be again. as though the very event of a prophet phases in, manifests, incarnates in this universe. God sent an angel to guy A, then to guy B. but its the same event. why are we told not to worship idols. because when idol worship ia widespread. other events follow suit. phase in to it as well. as some events manifest like beads. one atop the other. if a bag of them drops on the table, you would see the first bead falling off to the ground. and those are idol worshipers. but the others follow suit. environmental issues start weighing on us as a result, volcanoes happen out of nowhere. wars become more frequent. and so on when the day phases in, it comes with the sun. when idol worship phases in (and it will. as it will become the majority again). it's sun will too. and all the stars go down (or in other language light pollution happens). and most wend up astray to truth. which is that there is a reoccurring system of events in this world. but that's just truth. what's the path? who's the guide. what else is true.

i said something similar in a comment some videos ago. one of the best things in paganism is that we do not have an orthodoxy. we do not have a bible or a pope neither. so i guess each one of us experience paganism in a different way. and that is awesome! personally, i think we have to take some care to not just substitute yahweh, jesus, mary for odin, thor and frigg, for example. of course one can say that the exactly opposite way was done by catholicism since there is a lot a paganism there eheheh but these anthropomorphized figures of the gods simply don't look very genuine to me. the very core of paganism is the ancestral cult and the animistic perspective of nature and human features. for example, thor is not the god of thunder, is the thunder through an animistic lens - power of will, courage, strengh, fertility, domination of chaos and so on. He speaks deeply inside and directly to our primitive feelings. this hierarchical structure with odin being the "allfather" does not feel very artificial (why not to say very christian-influenced too) to you all? the mythology has several layers of meaning but in the end of the day it is mainly a method of teaching about these forces, so these parenthood connections, for example, in most cases, do not have to be taken so literally. at least this is my opinion...

Finally some wisdom, brother! First of all, the norse faith was more a lifestyle and a cultural architecture than a religion. While a religion affects and regulates all sides of life, the norse faith was not seen as political or a moral standard. The norse faith was NOT dualistic and not hierarcic, the æsir and vanir are not good all the time, and definetly has human properties like greed, anger and a lot of selfishness. The jotnir are not all bad either, they just come from a different origin. Odin himself is a descendant of jotnar. They were not seen upon as spritual gods, but part actual physical beings and part animistic myths, and their properties would reflect both social and cultural changes. But the æsir usually wouldn't bother with the strife of Midgard, men had to carve their own path independent of the æsir. There were spirits, like nature spirits, magic nature beings and ancestral spirits, and these were also sacrificed to and revered, and this is the spiritual side of the norse faith. The æsir and vanir (I prefer to use æsir to gods, because the norse gods does not have full godlike properties) was not regarded as spiritual guides or appearing as a part of a personal revelation, this is another idea from christianity. So I'd definetly say much of the paganism is more inspired by christianity than of the norse faith. So, if you want to be a norse pagan, carve your own path. Revere the gods, but do not worship them. Revere where you came from, but accept that others do the same. Heed men more than gods, and do what does good for others.

@@geirarnehelland7271 good points! Just a nitpick on word choice there. I would say you definitely Should ´worship´ the gods. ´Worship´ meaning acting out physical ritual, not idolizing them. Animism is all about the physical ritual. It is unimportant in that lens whether the gods are ´real beings´ (almost certainly not, we´re alone on this rock, most likely). But the worship of them is a good way to satisfy our species´ evlotionary spiritual itch, and to live a more fulfilling life, without being dogmatic about it. Again I agree with you and we should avoid using heathenry as revivalist christianity but with a norse veneer.

I think that believing the gods are just ideas or conscious cosmic entities as you put it, would be awfully dull, not to mention that it would change absolutely everything we know about them and their history. That would mean that the stories of the gods arent real, because how could nebulas fight eachother, or have a home that they live in (asgard or vanaheim in our case). This could also mean that there is no afterlife, which personally doesnt bother me but i know it does to other people. I really dont mean to gatekeep or to come off as rude but, i just dont see how people that dont believe the gods to be physical entities call themselves "pagans". After all, you're just an atheist that follows the teachings of a person that you don't believe exists.
@nathanmauk9387

I think you're a little confused here. You seem to be taking 'ideas' and 'conscious cosmic entities' as near-synonyms, when the intent was to draw a distinction between, on the one hand, the gods as human mental constructs ('ideas'), and, on the other, the gods as independently existing beings with consciousness and volition ('entities'). You are evidently a materialist, but depending on your metaphysical suppositions, it's certainly possible for the gods to be 'real' but not material, or even material but not locally embodied. Anyway, regardless of opinions on the nature of the gods, the vast majority of Pagans and Heathens understand the myths as figurative stories or a kind of wisdom-literature, not as accounts of literal history.

What if the gods are the literal conscious energies of the natural world? And maybe the reason we have them is because our planet might be the only one with life. And if it isn't, what if a distant planet with life has their own gods of their own energies?

The Google definition aside from Christian view: a superhuman being or spirit worshiped as having power over nature or human fortunes; a deity. If the Vanir at the time were humans before they became gods this might before Urðr, Verðandi and Skuld shaped destinies. So if the Vanir had power over their own fortune they could achieve limitless power which is maybe what got the Aesir interested and chose them to populate a new world. But because they kept getting stronger and more knowledgeable they tried to take on Aesir for more knowledge but Odin wasn't having it. I think about this a lot to be honest, I always wonder Freya's Hall is like since we know nothing except she gets first pick. Or I wonder what Helhiem is like, I wonder if Bragi is who I should drink with since I'm a poet and creative as well but apparently Odin is also the God of poetry as well, I love the Gods and this faith, for Odin I try to learn something new about this faith everyday. Skäl!

I have a theory..... What if the god's adopted the identity's of the stories we created to connect with us more? or perhaps the god's reward us for our faith.... you prey to Thor and they reward you with lighting and thunder, you ask to see Odin so the god's send down a raven for you're faith. this could be said for every god in every religion, Since we wouldn't be able to comprehend the god's in they're true form, instead they become and show sign's of the god's we are familiar with. So in a way, Our stories and faith have created what the god's are now.

Our human perceptions of the Gods would appear limited in their capabilities. The Gods appear to us or express themselves in a myriad of ways that can be missed, misunderstood, or suppressed ( as I did as a Christian youth ). This frustrates many modern pagans who are looking for easily explained and rationalized deities. Many pagans arrogantly argue over "sources" as if the limited historical, linguistic, and archaeological records are the sum total of our Gods. In fact, some measure their status as a pagan as to how well they "know" the old sources. While the existing sources are wonderful for guidance and a window into our ancestral ways; they cannot replace our connection to the Gods in the here and now. For those of us that have experienced the Gods directly, their power and existence is irrefutable. What we have are modern relationships with the Gods, and our Gods ( unlike others ) aren't just a story in a big book.

All peoples have their gods. They are not inventions, but real spiritual beings who take over the leadership of the people. Odin, together with other spirits, led the Germanic peoples. Such guidance is limited in time and other spirit beings then take over the further guidance. Therefore it is questionable whether Odin can still be reached. He has taken on another job. Odin = Wotan taught in the mysteries of the Germanic peoples and was incarnated as Buddha. In Asia the W is a B: Wotan-Wodha-Bodha-Buddha. The big difference between Odin and Buddha here can be confusing. It must be noted, however, that the task of leading the Germanic peoples was completely different from that in Asia.
