Under the traditional route, surgery is often the most common outcome for many scoliosis patients. Before a patient decides to go with surgery, it is important to understand the goals of that surgery and any other options that the patient has. The first goal of spinal fusion surgery is to stop progression, and secondarily to reduce the curve. There is very little data on the long term effects of spinal fusion. All hardware, like metal and screws, have a lifespan and will most likely need to undergo surgical revisions as the patient continues to age. There are side effects that are known, such as hardware failure. Rods can pull away from the spine, break, or bend while the spine continues to progress. There is also a chance for the rods and screws to affect the nerves and create discomfort or pain. This surgery also affects mobility, and at times the scoliosis will continue to progress even after the spine is fused. The reason that many people choose surgery is because it is the most dominant treatment in the healthcare system when it comes to scoliosis. Patients who are being managed by surgeons don’t know that there are other options, like the Scoliosis Reduction Center. The treatments are extremely specific to get a specific result for each scoliosis patient. These treatments strive to improve function in the spine and to reduce the curve of the scoliosis. Dr. Nalda believes that surgery should be your last option after you have exhausted every other approach.

I had a spinal fusion in 2002 when I was 12, now I’m 33. Over the years I have battled with the ff challenges: Constant pain around the affected area Classic neuropathic pain Muscle pain/ dysfunction )spasms, impaired nerves/ senses, irregular muscle tension Overall I would still do a fusion again for me it was very successful and it was inevitable given my problems then.

Hi I had the surgery (s curve and full spine rod) I was 13 in 2002 so we are around the same time line of life long effects. I have developed extreme nerve pain from lower back down to my leg and the pain is awful. Aprently it is not Sciatica but effects of my tail bone curved on a 90degreee angle and thats causing the nerve pain. I feel greatful for the surgery but i now live with a very painful invicible disabilty. Sorrry to trauma dump.

@@AdityaGupta-xq3kr 100% correct. I had surgery in October 2019. I guess I was over doing it. I live by myself in a small one bedroom apartment. I hate clutter and I was going through my tiny storage closet of totes trying to get rid of or donate basically get rid of things I dont use. I bent over not even all the way down and I heard a loud pop followed by excruciating pain going across my back and down my leg I screamed out in pain because it was so painful. I knew exactly what happened of course one rod broke in one place the other in fwo places. I am scheduled for a revision spinal surgery on November 15. i just duont know how I am going to be able to do things that have to be done daily. I have a cat. I gotta clean her liter box, feed her etc. I thought of trying to make a small stool on wheels that would be low enough for me to do these things. Im going to see what my father and brothers say. ago didn't the doctor tell you that with fusion you end up without flexibility and no more motion.? my doctor told me, right on that area where the disk was removed the two bones will fuse together with the cage taking the place of the disk then put a bracket with screws top and bottom to hold everything together. so noooo....! you can't bend like before, you can't twist like before. YOU CANNOT !!! THAT IS MY PROBLEM I FORGET I CAN'T BEND DOWN TO PICK UP SOMETHING, AND I CAN'T TWIST, MUCH LESS STRETCH THE WAY I USED TO. I GIVE UP THAT IN EXCHANGE FOR TAKING AWAY MY PAIN. LITTLE DID I KNOW IS NOT THAT EASY.😭😭😭😭

I was fused in 2005 by the late Dr Shelokov from L3-T2. I was 24ish. Now that I’m 40 I can go from feeling great to almost debilitating pain overnight. Usually caused by weather systems or seasonal change. One problem I have been battling for years is the muscles in my back that are on top of the hardware, particularly between my shoulder blades. It feels like the muscles get cut or scraped badly if I’m not careful in my positioning while doing an exercise. Im 6’3” and about 150 pounds so I’ve always had problems putting on weight and adding muscle which is made harder now. Sometimes I wonder if getting the hardware removed would help any or would it be unnecessary pain with very little gain

Always so sore in between my shoulder blades, super tight muscles, only started to get lower back pain the last year-ish. I lived in a colder climate and had to move because I would just be so stiff and sore all the time. Such a lack of mobility, hard to exercise, very depressing.

I suffered for 35 yrs under chiropractic care, orthopedists, phys therapy, accupuncture, you name it, been there, done that. My injury was L5 - S1 herniation, indenting into the spinal cord 4 to 5 mm causing horrific sciatica pain and psoas on the left. The various practitioners were able to keep me working so long as i paid them hundreds per week, but my pain was relentless and not getting any better. Couldn't stand, sit, or laydown without agonizing pain. It destroyed my life, taking away all my prospects. Then one morning i awoke and had new pain on my right side and couldn't take a single step if my life depended upon it. Ambulance to ER. They admitted me on a Friday, because i live alone. Otherwise they would have discharged me. Monday, the Backstabber evaluated me and ordered an MRI. Have no idea what caused it, but after examining the MRI, doc just looked and said : _"Oh yeah. Big time!"_ As luck would have it, he was confident that he could help me with neurosurgery. It all went very well. The nerve pain was gone completely when i awoke in recovery. I had surgical pain, which was pretty intense at first, but it was nothing compared to what i had been suffering. It was instant relief. They had me out of bed and walking on third day. Home alone on day four. I'm not the least bit gay, but i could kiss my Backstabber, and The Sandman on the lips, I love those guys. They literally saved my life. It's been 10 years now and i've had no trouble at all. Dealing with SYMPTOMS is pretty much a life-sentence whereas your only options are to cope, or quit, and that becomes your everyday battle. Far better to treat the CAUSE of the problem instead. (If options are available. The worst words you could ever hear are : _"We found the problem. There is nothing we can do."_ ) I spent over $100k trusting in the holistic approach, and they all counseled me to avoid surgery at all costs. They were all 100% wrong in my case. L5-S1 fusion did the trick. Dealt with the CAUSE, and the symptoms automatically went away. My regret is not seeking all avenues of remedy all those years. How different my life could have been.

i don't have your typical scoliosis. Mine is due to 2 congenital bone abnormalities (hemivertebrae). I have an S shaped curve with it being 50 degrees around L1 through L3 and then I have a smaller 36 degree curve at L4 through S1. I have always been slightly limited in what I can do all my life but not bad, but about a year ago, it's gotten much worse. About 12 years ago, It was around 39 degrees at the top and 25 at the bottom. Last year, I was having walking issues and tried physical therapy which caused a great deal of pain for months. Woke up after about my 6th session and could not walk, sit, cough or sneeze much without pain. Had to lay down most of the day for months. Now I can move a little better, less pain, can sit longer without pain, walking about 15 minutes at a time every day and stay up most of the day, but they are talking surgery. Fusion from just above L1 through S1. I have no idea what to do . I'm 56. I don't want this surgery, but I don't want the curve getting worse.

Surgery was recomended for me soon 40 years ago. As hard as it is to believe my parents allowed me to choose to not have spinal fusion. Tthat decision was made after i visited a post op patient in the hospital and witnessed the immeadiate after afects of that surgery. Now in my mid fifties i dont suffer from any back pain but certainly dont have the mobility i had as a younger person. Though i have to explain to almost every doctor i see why my parents didnt elect to have my problem fixed surgically. My mother was a med school graduate though never practiced medicine as she decided to be a stay at home mom. Not sure if that was a reason behind allowing me to make the decision against spinal fusion. Not sure if my decision was correct or not but truly cant point to any issues medically that have arisen by my decision. If you were to see me you would notice my one ahoulder droops a coup,e inchs and i have uneven hips.

I've read all of the comments and what seems to be common, is that those who have had smaller fusions, 5 or fewer vertebrae seem to recover fine with minimal disruption. While those who have had a larger area fused (8 or more) are more likely to have long-term issues. Maybe not right after recovering, but years later. I think it's great that so many of you have come forward about your experience with your surgery. It offers a bit of hope to some of us who have to make the decision. I would certainly like to hear from folks who are older (55+) who have opted NOT to have surgery to find out what life with severe scoliosis has been like for them. As for me, I'm 45 and have had scoliosis since I was 11, it was found during an annual screening in school. My curve was about 10 degrees, I was sent to Shriner's Hospital to see an Orthopedist to be fitted for a Boston brace. I went through a growth spurt and the curve progressed to 16. Their goal was to keep the curve under 25 degrees and I was told that I wouldn't have to worry about the curve getting bigger once I stopped growing. LIES! At 13 I had an x-ray of my hand done to determine how much growth I had left, and was told that I was just about done and wouldn't see 5 feet tall, also LIES! I continued to grow to be 5'2' by the time I was 21 (I suspect would be closer to 5'4" if I didn't have scoliosis. During that time I was never refitted for another brace, nor was I seen again after the age of 13. My GP never looked more into my condition because I never complained about any pain. That was the huge misconception and still is by many doctors, that the curve will NOT progress after you stop growing. I can tell you that it most certainly DOES. My 16-degree curve progressed to 32 by the time I was 18. I had enlisted in the US Army and passed every portion of the mandatory physical before they realized that I had scoliosis. They sent me for an x-ray and my curve was at 32, two more degrees than they would allow, so I was unable to enlist. Save yourself the hassle and tell them upfront. ;) My scoliosis didn't bother me until I was 38 and the curve progressed to 42 degrees. Had I been told to avoid repetitive bending, twisting, overreaching, climbing ladders with a load, and limit the weight I can safely lift to 25 pounds or less, I would have opted for a different career path. I was now on permanent Light duty and unable to work full-time. I'm now 45 and have stopped working altogether, my choice. My curve is now at 70, classified as a Severe DextroThoracic. I have an S curve that affects the lower cervical discs all the way down to the lumbar area. I have been seeking treatment from my chiropractor since 2017, I go once every 4-6 weeks as needed. My spine is still flexible and has no issue moving for the most part. She doesn't think that Surgery at this point is necessary as I am walking unassisted, no major mobility issues, none of my internal organs are compromised, no balance issues, no chronic pain. For me, surgery is the very last resort and I am opting for function over aesthetics. It's just not worth the risk for me personally at this point in my life. For those inquiring minds, I'm now standing a hair under 5 feet tall, and have entered the mid-life perimenopausal phase of life. I do expect that my curve will progress as I continue to age. I'm hoping to avoid surgery for as long as I can. Also, is it just me, or does anyone else wonder why medical professionals don't offer bracing after the age of 18? Adults wear braces for their teeth, and doctors offer braces for legs and neck. Why not the back? -Heather in Canada

I am a 72 year old Canadian woman who has just had an Anterior fusion, L4.L5 with inter-vertebral spacers from L4-L1. For five years I worked diligently with targeted Somatic exercises and extensive daily walking, which reduced my back pain but did nothing for the instability in L-4 and L5. During those years my spinal curve increased to 46 degrees from 43 degrees. My balance was progressively worse and I was exhausted by midday every day from the effort of holding my back up. I had significant leg pain, especially on the concave side of the curve, and numbness in both feet. Quadratus luborum on the convex side was chronically pulled to the concave side with pain on that side and sciatica. I'm only 6 weeks post-op and still being careful not to twist, bend or lift any weight over 5 pounds. It's too soon for physio, but I've regained 3 and a half inches in height and have much less back pain, although the rest of my body is slowly re-aligning.with lots of little muscle aches and pulls. Surgery was my last resort. It took 6 hours, and I'm still feeling the effects of anesthesia and narcotic drugs post-op on my mental function, especially memory. It was a trade-off I accepted because my quality of life was much less for the years I experienced the spinal instability and pain.

I had most of my spine fused about 10 years ago when I was around 16 so I can’t comment on growing up without surgical intervention. But… my surgeon is absolutely amazing and specializes in pediatric orthopedic surgery related to the spine and also non-surgical options and spent years studying scoliosis specifically. Personally, I was not a candidate for bracing because my curves progressed way too rapidly. Mine also started out very mild and was caught in a screening at school. I hit a growth spurt and my curves increased to around 60 degrees and 80 degrees. My surgeon said no brace at the time could have prevented my originally 20 degree curve from becoming an 80 degree curve because it was so aggressive. Years later, my then 13 year old niece had the signs of scoliosis and thankfully hers wasn’t progressing as rapidly. She saw the same surgeon and he was able to successfully reduce the progression of her curves with physical therapy and a brace and so far she has not needed any surgical intervention at the age of 17. I think the success of bracing really seems to depend on the individual and their situation, as well as what specialists they have access to and what skills those specialists have. I am absolutely not a medical professional, but I imagine braces for spines are very different from braces for teeth and other body parts. Teeth braces are installed directly on the teeth and adjusted frequently, not wrapped around the whole mouth/jaw like how a spinal brace is wrapped around the torso. Wrapping someone’s head in a brace probably wouldn’t fix their crooked teeth unless there was some other more specific hardware installed in there. But again, I’m not a medical professional and that’s just my way of thinking about it, I definitely could be completely wrong.

First I am sorry you have this condition. I see some similarities bc I am now 53, they knew I was born with fused vertebrae and watched me closely for scoliosis via X-ray. I didn’t know I had exaggerated Kyphosis until I was 42 and also with cyst in middle of that curve called a Syrinx. This caused advanced DDD in my cervical vertebrae. Unfortunately - I did the fusion from C3 - T1 (I was born fused from T1-T3). Worst decision of my life. I had 4 levels. I did have ACDF at one level when I was 42yo. Then the vertebrae above and below were in bad shape and I had pain daily. Now I still have pain daily and feel like I am trapped in a tight vice that I will never be free of. Like some huge web of tentacles are pulling all my back and neck muscles. My muscles in my neck and back are hard as concrete. Little relief with deep massage. I would def say to everyone with spinal scoliosis of any kind - do not do it. It’s a life sentence of discomfort and pain. I am so glad you didn’t get this done. Back issues are so horrible. On a positive note - the suffering has strengthened my faith. Yes, I wonder the same about a brace! At least one can take it off and keep some mobility in muscles and not lose them to permanent contraction state. Thanks for sharing your story.

I see a lot of bad experiences on there which might be scary for some people who are considering surgery or have it booked, so I'll throw in my experience. I had mine in 2008 in the UK at the age of 18, and my curve was just over 50 degrees. They completely corrected the curve, and I look totally normal now, a very slightly lower right shoulder but no one can notice it. I gained an inch and a half in height. I'm now 32 and I'm still very active, I cycle and lift weights and am physically fit. I won't say I have no aches or pain at all, but it's certainly no worse than the pain I had before the surgery. It not terrible, and at least I know that I've hit pause on the progression. It might be the right option for some people, so don't disregard it entirely just because it's so invasive. Sometimes that's the reaction needed to correct the problem properly once and for all.

But thankfully I've seen this video and now I'm going to try my best to live through this and look into treatment when I'm 18 cause my family will probably be skeptical and tell me it wouldn't work but I'll trust this and hope I get results

I had spinal fusion from the base of my neck to the middle of my back. That was when I was 8, I'm now 47. My lower spine is still twisted and curved. I have arthritis and I am limited to what I can do. I tried applying for disability but because I had it done when I was 8 I've been denied. The older I get the worst my back has become and my arthritis has affected me, and my ability to do my job.

Hi, I have a question. I had a very bad scoliosis and had a surgery at 14 and now I'm 19 yo. Unfortunately my hardware broke and I'm waiting for surgery so the broken hardware can be replaced. My question is what happens if I just get the rods out and not put new ones in? Is that possible? Is my spine already damaged and can't function without rods? And if that is possible can I straighten my spine with excercises?

@@As-vb1diI still have my hardware. I had like a 90 and 70 degree curvature. But I’ve been looking into having it removed. Also my friend broke his rod. They just remove them. No replacement. The rods and screws are only needed for the first year. It’s just to hold your spine in place. Until it fuses. They remove something between your spinal columns. So they fuse into one piece. So after a year the hardware is not needed. But unless your hardware is causing serious issues. They choose to leave it in. Or if for example with you. They will just remove those 2 screws. Maybe a portion of rod.

My curve and fusion length is similar to yours, my first surgery was in 2012. I’m not a medical professional, just speaking from personal experience. My surgeon cleared me to do any activity after 1 year post op. He told me as long as it wasn’t causing pain (other than the normal muscle soreness associated with exercise) that it was safe to do anything I wanted. I’ve found that the more active I am and the more I strengthen my muscles, the less back pain I have.

I do not understand why you are still in pain if you do spinal fusion. That should free nerve compression. What is the cause of pain after spinal fusion?
@ScoliosisReductionCenter
@ScoliosisReductionCenter 18 күн бұрын
While spinal fusion is a common and effective treatment for many back conditions, it doesn't guarantee complete pain relief for everyone. Several factors can contribute to ongoing pain after this procedure: Failed Fusion: In some cases, the bone graft used to fuse the vertebrae may not heal properly, leading to continued instability and pain. Adjacent Level Disease: This occurs when pain develops in a neighboring segment of the spine that wasn't treated during the original surgery. Hardware-Related Issues: The screws or rods used to hold the vertebrae together can become loose, break, or cause irritation. Scar Tissue Formation: Scar tissue can form around the surgery site, compressing nerves or causing pain. Persistent Nerve Damage: If the nerve damage caused by the underlying condition was severe, it may not fully recover even after the surgery. Psychological Factors: Chronic pain can lead to psychological issues like depression and anxiety, which can exacerbate the perception of pain

I had the surgery 20 years ago and there actually are more risks and drawbacks than what could probably have been mentioned in this excellent 9 minute video. The limited mobility caused by fused vertebrae means I have fewer vertebrae. The one's I have left have worn more quickly. Some discs have degenerated, and even become herniated, the tendons have over stretched, the muscles have frequently spasmed, the nerves have been pinched and I have been in and out of PT, and gotten a corrective surgery for a rod that came loose. I never felt back pain before the initial Harrington rod implementation but pain, stiffness, discomfort, etc. have been part of my life ever since. I don't know what would have happened if I had not gotten any surgery and I cannot advise a particular decision for others. What I can say is if you have been diagnosed with scoliosis (with significant progression of curvature in your spine), realize that there is no cure. Your spinal column is a big and complex part of the body so the condition is likely to impact the rest of your life. Therefore, it is best to accept that your life will be different and make the best of it. If you learned you were diagnosed with autism, type-1 diabetes or Parkinson's, you wouldn't expect a cure to make you 'normal'. Instead, you might redefine 'normal' because everyone is actually different anyways, see the ways you are blessed as we all are and see the beauty in your unique life.

if you're considering getting spinal fusion for scoliosis DONT DO IT DONT DO IT DONT DO IT!!! I had my spine fused from C3 to L2 five years ago when I was 19 and I have been suffering from debilitating pain since. The best years of my life have been wasted laying in bed. I struggle severely with putting on my shoes, lifting anything, wearing a backpack, wearing a bra, standing for more than 2 hours and even sleeping. I can't even get through a nail appointment without taking breaks to lay down. I can no longer participate in my favourite activities. I'm FUSED in a slouched position. I take so much tylenol and advil to cope with the pain and as result I have accidentally poisoned myself on more than one occasion just trying to get through the day. getting this surgery has been my greatest regret. If you're considering spinal fusion for yourself or for your child, don't do it. It will ruin your life. Sometimes I wish I died on that table. I'd rather be dead than be forced to live the rest of my life like this.

I haven't gotten lumbar fusion yet and in my early 40s. Always been athletic but my problem is spondylolisthesis and nerves messed up. I understand how you feel and I'd rather have gotten cancer

Hello. I successfully did my spinal fusion with rib resection on my T5-7 after suffering from TB spine, after the op I was able to regain my lost senses, defeated paralysis and was able to walk again. I as a result live with pain from damaged nerves, muscle spasms, I develop knots around my back, battle with sitting for too long and many other physical activities. I hate opioids however the pain management hospital I’m now attending is facilitating (alternating) steroid injections (epidural/ rib blocks) which have helped me to live a normal life that’s pain free. The last injection lasted for a period of 4 years and I was able to lead a normal life and I don’t remember ever taking a pain killer. I hope that you find someone who can help you deal better with this pain problem

I feel this on every level. I had the surgery when I was 15 and the last 7 years have been pure hell. I may need my S/I joint fused now and I’ve had my neck fused already. I don’t know how I’m going to do this.

It's been 27 years since my surgery a long term effect I've experienced is permanent knots from the rods before connected to my cervical spine. I'd need to get them replaced or removed to fix this.

@@Yola.violet598 I know that you didn't ask me, but... I had Scoliosis fusion surgery at 13 (actually turned 14 in the hospital), fused T1-L1. Braced POST-OP for 23hrs a day for 3 months, only allowed to take it off to shower. The surgery itself was the most excruciating, and one of the most traumatic thing's that I've ever been through, I have PTSD from the entire experience... Once the brace came off I realized that I couldn't sit back against the chairs at school, or anything with a hard back, I couldn't lay on the floor, only the couch or bed, because there was a visible screw or bolt protruding from the middle of my back. Went to my Ortho and asked him about it, told him it was causing discomfort, he said "everything is perfect. You're just too skinny"... I dealt with the discomfort that turned into actual pain because the screw/bolt was starting to press on a nerve, and now the rod on the top was visibly protruding, which it wasn't doing before. Went back to Ortho, told me the exact same thing, AND that he didn't need to see me anymore! That was 2yrs post-op... At 3.5yrs post I finally got a second opinion, and he actually did an X-ray, which my original Ortho failed to do even though I was continuously complaining of pain. It showed that my spine had continued to curve away from the rod, so it had started to pull away, which was why you could visibly see the top of the rod. And he also said that the reason that I had so much pain where the screw/bolt was protruding was because it was pressing on a nerve... Anyway, the reason I answered was because my second surgery was 4yrs after my 1st, and it was complete hardware removal. Once your spine is fused, you don't actually NEED the hardware anymore, the only reason that they keep it in is because it would be an unnecessary surgery to remove it, unless of course it's causing you more issues than it's worth, like mine was, or in rare cases you need it for stability (but I question if that's actually necessary, or makes them more money, if it needs to be replaced for some reason, instead of just removed?). And my 3rd surgery happened 4yrs after that one when I twisted just slightly, and BAM! I knew I had done something VERY bad. Unfortunately, I was 21 and uninsured, so I tried to suck it up and deal with the horrific pain... Until 2 weeks later I felt a large lump in my back, and it was movable! Yuck! It freaked out everyone that I was close to and they all told me I had no choice, I had to go get it checked out! So I went back to Ortho #2, he said that when I twisted I tore the muscle from my spine along with a fragment of my vertebrae, which formed a bursa sac (basically a cyst around the bone fragment), and it needed to be surgically removed. GREAT! Yet another surgery, and this time I had to pay out of pocket! He said he would work with me, but it had to be done... I still have a dent in the vertebrae, so that bone fragment must have been a pretty good size! I've had nothing but never-ending and worsening pain since my first surgery. My family was absolutely bullied into it by the way they spoke to us, saying things like "her Scoliosis is just going to get worse and worse until she's confined to a wheelchair, and then her lungs and heart will be crushed and she'll die, if you don't have the surgery" And this was in the early 90's (my 1st surgery). The fear mongering was insane, and should have been illegal! I've been in pain management since I was 21yrs old... I LOVE my children more than anything, but my 2 pregnancies in 2yrs absolutely destroyed my already destroyed back... All of the disc's below my fusion are herniated, I have SI joint disfunction, just too much to list... I'm SO grateful to have a supportive, loving husband who takes care of me and our children... But I'll tell ya, the pain is so incredibly excruciating that if I didn't have my kids, I would have left this world years ago.
