Dr. Glenn Barnhart explains the symptoms of mitral valve regurgitation such as becoming short of breath. There are five structures of the mitral valve: annulus, leaflet tissue, chordae tendineae, papillary muscles, and left ventricle. All of these are taken into consideration when the mitral valve is leaking and not working right. There are four degrees of mitral valve regurgitation: mild, moderate, moderately severe, and severe. I am 58 and the only male in my family to have MVP. I was diagnosed in 2005 with an echocardiogram. My symptoms are mild. Anxiety and panic attacks are common. They suck. I work out regularly. I don't drink or smoke. Heart palpitations are also common. Sometimes increases heart rate. Especially when I worry about something. But the anxiety attacks are the worst.

Did they say what might be causing the regurgitation? I had similar with my Tricuspid valve that they luckily repaired 9 years ago with an annuloplasty ring (it was severe) which is a lot safer and better than replacement. My advice is keep getting Echo's every year.

I was diagnosed with severe regurgitation. Other than a heart murmur, I never had any symptoms. In fact, I was working out on a daily basis. I felt like I was in great shape. They surgically repaired my valve. I suppose it was a good thing, but I felt great going into the operation, and I still feel great now. Doctors say I no longer have a murmur and I have no evidence of any regurgitation either.

@@bannertraveller5879 they did a micro cut on the right side. They didn’t do the full open heart procedure and split my rib cage open. However, they still split 2 ribs with this procedure. so patients aren't suffering enough with mild regurgitation? I have had that and doctors will even lie about what is causing your symptoms to keep from looking bad and not treating you. I had 3 cardiologists and none of them said, yes it's your mitral valve that is ruining your life, and we are not going to do anything about it. And we are going to blame it on your kidneys, your liver, sleep apnea, and whatever so you won't keep asking for our help. In the mean time they 'monetize you' by giving you pills, tests, scans, implants, and nights in the hospital to increase their profit on you. I experienced it for 3 years, and after loosing weight, exercise, eating right, and refusing their over the top treatments, my symptoms are still ruining my life. shortness of breath keeps me from enjoying life.

It can. The mitral valve is connected to the walls of the left ventricle. When the walls of the left ventricle get larger and pulls the mitral valve out of shape and it will leak. So if you can do what you can to get your ventricle back in shape, diet and exercise, then it will pull your valve back into shape where it will seal.

"Watchful waiting" around until moderate mitral valve regurgitation is severe risking left ventricular overload? THAT IS THE LAST thing you want to do, especially in an older (78) patient with calcified leaflets but moderate stenosis. Repair's the way to go to preserve longevity and a pain free quality of life. SOONER, NOT LATER. Tune up the decision tree. -- YOU CAN'T WAIT for the patient to be gasping for air flopping around like a flounder out of water-- waiting till something's REALLY broke or dead, imho.

I am 28 years old and I have trivial. It has been five years for you now. I wonder did you get any treatment or it got recovered by itself?
