Nice helpful ideas. 2 Nub questions: A) What is the rubber pad you used on your bench to keep the workpiece from sliding? 2) what is the type of plywood with the black top and where can I find it? My Big box nor local plywood shops didn’t stock it. Plywood shop was for commercial cabinet builders and said to put linoleum on top as they sniggered at me.
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 8 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. The rubber pad is just the non slip stuff that you sometimes put inside a kitchen drawer to stop the utensil container from sliding around. All hardware stores sell the product. The black ply is called Formply. Concretors use it for formwork to stop the concrete from sticking. Over here in Australia it can be found all over the place.....not sure about other parts of the world. Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺

I'd suggest both an impact driver and drill for the most part. A lot of the time you can buy them as a combo with batteries and a charger for less than buying them separately. And as you're using them the most, buy a decent set. I couldn't do without my Bosch blue 10.8V set but also have a cheaper 18V red Ozito set also so I don't have to change bits out LOL. Actually, I "misplaced the bosch driver and needed something now. Then found it 6 months later 😂🤣 All pretty essential IMO Shane. The 184mm saw is a good size for most general things. Although more expensive, I probably use my table saw more than a circular saw or drop saw. They're all still handy. But like everything, you'll probably end up with multiples of common tools.

I would suggest a cordless drill and impact driver purchased as a kit. I got the Ozito real budget brand one and it came with a bag (more handy than I could have imagined), two batteries, 4Ah & 1.5Ah plus a fast charger. Don't know what the current prices are but it was way cheaper than buying the two skins and then batteries. It can be far king annoying when you drill a pilot hole and then have to swap out the drill for a driver bit hence get the set and save the time swapping. It got annoyingly tedious when I had a single 14.4v drill. A few months later Ozito/Bunnings had a special on batteries and I picked up 2 x 4Ah batteries and a dual fast charger for AUD$99. A 4Ah battery is normally AUD$69 and the dual charger AUD$53.xx from memory so a good saving there IMO. As old man Knackered said, choose you battery brand and then stick to it as you are really locked into it unless you have a 3D printer and can make battery adapters for your tool. I made the mistake of getting the Ozito sliding compound mitre saw. It doesn't have the preset detents for the most common angles and it's a real pain to get it back to a square cut if you change it to cut a mitre. Get one that has the detents and you'll stay a lot more sane and unlike me you'll have hair into old age. 👍

Another stellar video. Your face at the beginning with all those choice was how I felt. On the power drill options, the other issue with a 240V vs a Battery is that the 240v one has inertia run-on whereas the battery drill stops pretty much instantly when you release the trigger. Trying to drive in screws with a 240V drill is not going to end well.

Two of those tools I regret not buying earlier (as I thought they were a bit of a luxury) are the impact driver, and the cordless nail gun. They both make work quicker and easier. No more swapping out drill bits and screwdriver bits, and if you are driving in big screws such as bugles, much less strain on the wrist. I've gone one step further, two drills: one for the pilot hole, and one for the clearance hole. The nail gun is great for holding small pieces in place while the glue dries, saving the clamps for the bigger jobs. My number 6 would be a jig saw.

I kept waiting for the "dad" joke and never got it, but you Still made me laugh, especially when you flexed that hand saw in the beginning. Over here where I live, there are people who play the saws (in musical bands). Maybe they do that in Australia too? I'm happy to report that I have at least one of each tool you featured! I Love them all but probably use my power driver the most. Here on the farm we're always needing to 'fix' something.

Pin nailer ahead of router for me. We used the nailer many more times than we route a decorative edge. Started with circular saw and electric drill. Repaired an 1890's farmhouse and now we have "it all" including a drill press to make repeatable adjustable cabinet shelves. It all includes battery and corded tools for most tasks just in different sizes. 5 1/2" circular saw for on top of the scaffold. 7 1/4" circular saw for ripping. 10" miter saw for the many cross cuts required on any project. We live in the house and still have projects every day to tackle. Need to add the dad jokes...they are always as good as you think they are with a grin or a groan each time

Shane, I thought I'd say thank you. I bought a basic Makita circular saw a few years ago and initially I found the learning curve a bit steep. I wasn't really getting good results. I think it was in 2022 you made the video for the straight cut jig. I made one at the time. I bought a 900mm aluminium ruler to incorporate into it, that serves as the spine of my jig. I did some reasonable projects with the saw+jig combination. I've pretty much moved on from the jig at this point but it was an invaluable step along the way.

During Covid lockdown , here in the UK , we got paid to stay home . So not being able to spend money at pubs and restaurants i started buying power tools to while away the days isolating . First a Driill , Driver , Jigsaw , Sander , Router , Nail Gun , Mitre Saw , Table saw . As i got better , so the tool purchase price increased . I now hang doors for friends , build boxes as gifts and the car stays outside as my garage is full of projects . 😊

Your tips are good as gold, like always. 👍 A small tip for those on a tight budget: a power sander is nice, but if you can't afford one at the time, stick your sand paper to a handy piece of wood with some double sided tape. It's not the same as a sander, but it's much better than the sand paper alone. And where is my dad joke? I hope you don't stop them? ❤

I don't like vinyl siding, but I was helping a man put it on a house. He had a homeade jig for cutting the pieces to length. The blade was installed backwards on the saw, and you slid it across the jig to make a nice smooth cut. While I was around the other side of the house, he needed to cut a piece of wood, so he reversed the blade back to the normal orientation. He also forgot to change it back to the backwards position. When I tried to cut the next piece of siding, did I ever have a surprise! That blade split that vinyl all to pieces! I asked him what was going wrong, and he sheepishly admitted what he had done.

Another great video, might I just add that the the most useful power tools depends upon the type of work that will be done. In my opinion and in not particular order my five most used tools are: cabinet saw, drill press, band saw, disk/belt sander, table router and lathe. Yeah and I know that's six, having said that I own all of the tools that you have mentioned and they get used but not as frequent as the ones that I have mentioned.

Just by way of explanation I used off-cuts and scrap to make simple wooden toys for charity. My current project is making 34 train sets so that I need a means of making repeated uniform cuts hence the cabinet saw and making wheels gives the drill press a good work out. As an initial set-up your suggested five tools would be an excellent starting point of most DIY work.
